Having a baby soon after graduation, concerned about starting my nursing career later
I graduated last August and had a baby in September. I stayed home with her four months before taking the NCLEX and looking for a job. I got hired in a NG program after a month and a half of looking. Don't worry. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

RNs in Miami
Right now, it is kind of difficult to find a job as a new RN in Miami. I did not look in Miami because I wanted to move out of the area but some of my classmates have found work in the area. A few people I know got jobs at Miami Children's and a handful got hired at Mt. Siani. Baptist does not hire new grads outside of their Baptist Scholars program and neither does Jackson. Many of my classmates found jobs in Broward County. That being said, who knows what the market will be like in a year and a half? Good luck

MDC Accelerated RN program, Spring 2010
Hi, I am a former AO student who graduated with honors in July. I saw your post and thought I would put in my two cents. I have a feeling that most of the AO students you contacted were probably just too busy to respod. Most of the students who failed out, failed out during the first semester. We lost a few more during Med-Surg, but after that most everyone passed. The AO program is fast paced. You will spend at least an hour or two each weeknight and one whole day of your weekends studying. If a test is approaching (which is often every week) you will spend almost all of your weekend studying. To succeed you have to do an insane amount of reading and learn most of the material independently. That being said, the program is very doable. Many of us were able to manage good grades and still have a social life. Now here is some quick advice for those considering or beginning the program: Don't start unless you are a great student. Read ALL of your reading assignments and get a Nursing for Success or similar book to do practice questions for the topics you are studying. Do NOT let your classmates anger your professors. There will be unfair/ inaccurate test questions occaisionally but let it go. Make friends with a group of your classmates and help eachother. Good luck everybody!

Anyone starting RN at Miami Dade College Fall 2009?
Thanks, Mommy'sgirl. You've been so helpful. I haven't heard anything about the kit so far but I have to go to the medical campus Wednesday to get my supplies and book list stamped. I'll ask them about it.

Anyone starting RN at Miami Dade College Fall 2009?
Mommy'sgirl: I have a quick question if you don't mind. I read in prior posts that we could get refunded for previous school-related expenses through South Florida Workforce. Did you get refunded for your seat deposit, background check, urinalysis etcetera? :)

Mommy'sgirl: How long did it take for you to get your vouchers after being approved for Workforce? Thanks

Anyone starting RN at Miami Dade College Fall 2009?
I paid my 100 deposit today too and was also told by the lady at the window in the Nursing Dept. that I don't need to have everything done by orientaion. Do any of you know if the program is also held on the Homestead Campus? Also, just curious-- What are your educational backgrounds?

Any Miami Dade College students going for the acceler. or Generic option fall 2009?
Congratulations to all of you too!!!! No, I haven't paid my deposit yet. I will do it on my day off, Monday. I didn't read anything about insurance in the packet but I'm sure they'll tell us what we need to know about it during orientation. I think I do remember reading somebody post about it on a previous thread as well. You guys made me feel SOOO much better about not having to have everything done by the 23rd! I will try to work on getting everything done by then anyway but now my stress level has plummeted! Bruce, sorry I don't know of any apartments near the medical campus. I live near Homestead (wayyy south of the medical campus). Have any of you other AO students had trouble with your financial aid? I have 3 holds: one for unevaluated transcripts (I think they were evaluated about five months ago); another for having a Bachelor's degree; and another for not having met the Standards of Academic Progress (an advisor told me that its probably because I have so many credits already).

Hey MOMMY'SGIRL, I am also going to be in the accelerated program in the Fall. It seems like we have to do A LOT by the 23rd. I work full-time and its going to be tough trying to get everything done. Not that I'm not sooo grateful to have gotten in. For the people who didn't get in this time, my heart goes out to you. Don't give up- I'm pretty sure this was the highest cut off GPA ever. Like Mommy'sgirl was saying, one of the great things about Miami Dade is that you CAN retake courses and they count the highest attempt- a lot of other schools don't let you do that.

Miami-Dade Accelerated
I've met a lot of teachers lately who seem very unhappy with the school system. Your GPA is good too! I hope we both get in!

Miami-Dade Accelerated
Hi tracie0305, My gpa is 3.87 (I have one B in A&P 2). I'm freaking out about gettting in because I've read in this forum that at least 3 people with 4.0 's are applying. I am currently a zookeeper (Great Apes) with a B.S. in psychology. I love what I do but I want a career I can grow in (you can always keep learning new things in nursing), have more stability and make a little more money at, while still caring for others. And you? Also, do you know if the program is offered at the Homestead campus?
