I emailed the advisor and was sent instructions on what classes to register for along with other instructions. I have registered for Advanced Patho & Theory.

I'm working in the med center right now. I have no idea how many students there will be, and how many to each specialty. A few of my coworkers are in the program, each one a different specialty...others, a different school. However, the ones at TWU told me to take Patho and Theory since those are both pre-reqs for Assessment and Research. So, that's my plan...unless the adviser registers us.

Congrats to both of you Nolagrace & Ladydarla! I'm going to Houston campus too! I got accepted into the adult acute care program. I think all the core classes are the same for everyone the first few semesters. Then we start specializing. I'm going to go part time (2 classes) for now and work full time. That might change though when clinicals/preceptorship begins.

Just signed into my TWU account and my admission status changed from pending review to accepted!!!! Hope it's not a mistake...LOL

I've applied for the TWU Houston NP program, however, I have not received any news regarding acceptance or rejection yet. Don't really know if anyone has from any campus just yet. Best of luck to you though.

I'm in your boat, but about to graduate, previous degree in business. I chose an ADN program because they are more hands-on skill focused when it comes to educating...we are told by many people in the hospital where we have clinicals that we really "dive into" caring for the patients...I'm not saying that BSN students do not do the same (I believe they work just as hard as we do)...just repeating a comment from what was heard by the staff members... However, when it comes to finding a job in this market, many of the hospitals want BSN for new grads and will not consider you if you do not have at least that degree. As an upcoming ADN grad, many of us (classmates included) are having a difficult time getting an interview. You have to know someone on the inside to pull you in to get you a chance at interviewing with anyone. GPA is not a factor when there is someone who might have a lower GPA but a BSN degree. There is no difference in the starting pay between a BSN vs ADN, BSN provides more opportunities for growth in the hospital, can put you on a management track, etc... (this is mainly for the magnet hospitals). If you do decide to pursue an ADN-RN degree, try to get certified as a nurse aide after your first semester and get your foot in the hospital that way. Give it 2 months (it's what I was told - I know it sounds like a long time)...but they are very busy right now. If after 2 months it's still not there. Bring your score print out you received to the nursing admin office and ask them if they can input it themselves. Someone had a similar situation where it was not inputted into the system and they had to bring their papers to the office. Hope this helps...good luck!

You don't have to buy them if you don't want to. They are both available through the school library, one is available online.

Points are out of 12 when we got accepted. You will get 4 points for having an 'A' in psyc, English, and at least one A & P course. 4 points if you have all of your non nursing related classes complete (less 4 hours max). There's a range. 4 points for making a 100 on the reading portion of the HESI. U take your reading score and divide by 25 to know your point total. For example if you have 4 points from your "A's", 4 points from completing all you non nursing related courses, and you make an 80 on the reading portion of the HESI (80/25 = 3.2 points), your score will be: 11.2 out of 12.

Congrats bri630! I don't know the schedule for the other campuses, Cyfair might be diffferent (which is the college almost everyone posting on the thread attends). So far the first semester is a blur. When you start, you will either be going to morning classes or afternoon classes. If you want morning classes plan on arriving to orientation at least 1 hour early because they are difficult to get and are on a first come, first serve basis. Many people want them because they have kids. Monday - Wednesday if you're in the morning classes they are from 0900 to 1130, if you are in the afternoon they are 1230 to 1500. On Thursday for the first 8 weeks everyone went from 0900 to 1400 (with a 1 hour lunch break). Fridays we're off (technically). On the off days many people are still at school practicing their lab skills in open lab because there's never enough time in class to learn the hands on part. The first semester we don't go to any clinicals, that starts the second semester, so don't bother buying the uniform or jacket just yet. Besides, they changed the colors this year and I'm not sure if the bookstore on campus knows it. Helpful advice - buy your books early and shop around (half.com, amazon, ebay, etc...). Join the student nurses association, find a student mentor to help you out (this is a biggie, it's really helped me). Start a new thread like this except have it say "LoneStar CyFair College Spring 2010" that way you can start to network with people before school starts. I had a pre-party at my house with all the members here before school started so we could get to know each other. Anything that needs to get done in your life, take care of it before school starts. Once the program starts you won't have time to do it (at least the first 8 weeks of the semester). If you're single and still live with your parents and don't have a job, that's the best...everyone I've spoken with that's in this program and married have had arguments about the time requirements this program takes. I've looked up divorce stats and it states that there is a 50 - 80% divorce rate for nursing students. (LOL). Anything else...PM me...

I stand corrected...there are some videos in there also for basic skills, like what we might get tested over...yikes!

For all the other people who might be reading this thread ... waiting for your acceptance letter ... we're all not posting because we're being slammed right and left with research papers, projects, assigned reading, midterms, practicums... I'm sure after things settle down some of the members might post about their first semester. As for me, the reading is definitely difficult to keep up with. Don't be suprised if you have a class (or 2) that assigns you over 100 pages to read (yes each class) before the next week.

Oh well, I'll just save my receipt for tax time and try to get my $$ back then. For all future nursing students out there who might read this thread to find out what is going on the first week of nursing school... This is how most people feel --> and you don't start at a walking or running pace, you start off sprinting. So, be prepared to read, read, read and do your assignments. I don't think I've had 1 night yet where I've slept 8 hours...how about any of you all who are in the same class as me? Have you been able to sleep more than 8 hours in a night the first week? ctgirl43 is right, here is word-for-word an email from ms. monteiro when i told her about the bookstore and scrubs back in the middle of july... she typed: you will not need them until next semester when you start clinical so you don't need them now but there may be a deadline for ordering them and i am trying to find that information out for you all. as for ordering them elsewhere, i will also try to find that out. they will have to be the exact same color and ordering from somewhere else, it may be more difficult to do that. when i know more, i will let you know. thank you for checking. ms. monteiro

OK... I went to "Scrubs Etc" today. They only have a store in the Woodlands/Spring area and in Conroe. They offer a student discount... 20% off the needed school supplies (uniforms, BP cuff, badge holder, stethoscope) and 15% off everything else. I didn't check on the shoes. They allow you to try the scrubs on too. The woman I spoke with said she believes CyFair uses the scrub brandname of "Urbane" (is this right luckymama21?). They do have them there, tops and pants. Now, for the pants, they had the Urbane drawstring. There are other pants there the same exact color with elastic band and some with a combination elastic/drawstring, but not Urbane brandname. They carry all sizes. The price I'm listing are for sizes S-XL, if you need 2X the sales woman said to add $2 or $3. Urbane Tops: 22.99 ($18.39 w/discount) Elastic band pants: 21.99 ($17.59 w/discount) ID badge holder: $4.99-12.99 (ranges from plain colors to ones with decorative gems) Plain BP cuff: $24.99 ($19.99 w/discount) There were decorative ones there too, but I didn't price them.
