I have orientation today and was wondering if any of you nursing students can give me advice about teachers for NUR 110, 111, and 118. Would you recommend them or stay away from certain teachers. PM me or let me (and other students) know by initials on this forum. Thanks in advance!!!

For varicella titer there is St. John Health (Detroit, Madison Heights, Novi, Southfield, Livonia, Warren are a few places). I guess mention you are a student and it is $24. Then there is Midwest Health Center Dearborn, Livonia, Romulus are a few places) and it is $20.

nwlbnoob- the test is around 2 hours (i don't know if different center do it differently). This is how it was for me: I too thought I couldn't bring anything in, but other people had purses and bags, I had a folder and pencil. The person running the test had pencils for us to use and scrap paper and she just said no cell phones or calculators allowed. We had to do a pre test to let them know which test to give us (don't know why they need to give out different tests....) So if you got not many wrong you took Test A, if you got alot wrong Test D. I don't know what kind of practice study guide you got for the test, but my didn't come close to telling what would be on the test. Know your fractions ( how to add, divide, and multipy them), percentages, how to get circumference (circle, 1 question). Thank god I was already good at math because of a recent math class for the NET. And I got my results right away, not on paper but by her telling me. So then I told my caseworker what she said. They will give your results on paper to your caseworker. Hope this helps. But keep in mind I hear other centers may do things differently, this is my experience from the detroit center on MI ave.

Update on my progress with NWLB: Took the TABE test Monday the 4th, passed with flying colors. Then I scheduled my appointment with my career planner (they told we I could go right after the test and someone would call me to schedule that appointment, but I waited around until I could actually make the appointment right then and there), well she wasn't available until next Monday (11th), so I took it. Well I went Tuesday (5th) to work on my resume and afterwards went to my career planner to see if she had any cancelations this week, and she actually had one right then. So I didn't have to wait until next week. At this meeting you just sign paperwork, didn't need to bring anything. Now I just wait until the ITA calls me for a meeting for the final approval. I am cutting it really close, trying to get my summer classes paid for. NWLBnoob- at my orientation they said if you have income of your own then you don't need to put your parents income. So I would go with your W-2 and the registrant. You can also talk to your caseworker about that.

god-is-love: Your welcome, but keep me posted, I'm also starting on the 18th and I'm about a week behind you (if I pass my Tabe the first time, which I should, and get an appointment with the career planner the next few days after that). So I'm using your experience to see where my timeline falls....... But I know that there's a big possibilty that it won't happen, but that next semester (if I get approved) will be taken care of.

I was thinking of hand delivering it. That way I know for sure that they got it!!!! Unless I can mail it now and call in a week to confirm that they got it. Maybe I should ask if I can do that...... That campus isn't very close to me.

I asked my case worker and she said that there was no time limit, unless you got another job and then quit that. On another note for those thinking of going to the City of Detroit to do their NWLB, it is only for the people of Detroit unless you have been laid off, displaced, and have letters to prove that (or maybe it was just my case worker following the rules, so if anyone else got through that did not fit the requirements, their caseworker didn't care where they were from). They did not say anything about that in the orientation. So when the caseworker saw my address she said I couldn't go thru and that I would have to start over in a wayne county mi works (which have waitlists). But right now I am contesting my determination letter for unemployment, so she said she will continue with the process. So now I have an appointment to take my TABE test monday May 4th (they have appointments M, W, TH at different times). Only two more steps after that. god-is-love why won't you have your funds in time for the 18th? Did they say for sure that you wouldn't get it in time.... I thought you just had to wait for a call to pick up your funds, so you still have 19 days.......

I actually called (monday 27th) about the "within" one month for booster/titers and they said you can do it anytime from now just as long as you have it for orientation. That means you can even get them done the first week of June even though it is over a month from receipt of acceptance (though I won't wait that long). But I thought the same as you (had to get everything done from May 17 to May 27 to be within the months limits). And don't forget the tetorifice shot, it is not on the list of things to do but it is stated in the letter.

god-is-love congrats on your funding!!!!! I'm holding off paying for the summer semester until the last moment, hopefully I can get this done in time. You give me hope, you've been doing it for two weeks and now just waiting for the check, so if you can do, maybe I can to!!!!! So hopefully as soon as I pass the Tabe I can talk to that career planner. Again congrats!!!!

at the one at 9301 michigan ave, you just stop in at 10 or 2 m-f to go to your first orientation. so you don't have to wait until june to go. unless your not in a hurry, if so you can to any michigan works. we are just telling people to go to detroit because there is no wait list. if you want to know if they will pay for the school and program you want go to [color=#808080]www.mycareereducation.org to find the schools. and you go to http://www.michigan.gov/nwlb/0,1607,7-242-47890_48226_48275-180123--,00.html to see if it is high demand for the detroit area.

thanks god-is-love for the message. i did get it in time for my orientation. for anyone going thru this process try to set up your triage appointment (ask where they are, just found out today where it was) after your first orientation for a day (or the day of) after your second orientation. went in today with everything ready for triage, but all they do is just check to see if you have everything then set up your appointment. they gave me the option of next week, was told if i wanted anything earlier i would have to go to the triage office to see if there was any cancelations for this week (that's why i say set it up as soon as you can). so i went to the office, figured the worse they could tell me was that there wasn't anything available. i was very lucky, they had a cancelation tomorrow morning (wednesday), so instead of waiting almost a week to give my paperwork in, it starts the process sooner. so here is where i stand: 1. 1st orientation (april 27); you can go anytime day of the week m-f at 10am or 2 pm, 2. 2nd orientation (april 28); it is only tuesday or thursday at 11am (get there early so you can sit in front and get first in line to talk to triage), 3. triage appt. (april 29); by apptment only. i have left: 4. tabe test (around may 5th, they said today usually it's a week after triage, but i will try to see if i can take it sooner), 5. wait for call from career planner, 6. talk to ita (last and final step). they couldn't give an exact time between the 4, 5, and 6 steps, but i will try to get those steps done as fast as i can!!!

I would just go to one of the Detroit's Michigan Works. I just went on Monday (27th) at the one off Michigan ave, there is no signing up, you just show up, they answering all the questions you have and it was only 45 min. They were very friendly and I even have my second orientation on Tuesday (28th). I hoping to get this done and accepted by summer classes.....They said, there it could take only three weeks to get thru everything, if you get your paperwork in on time. Just like god-is-love stated, just go, you have nothing to lose, and maybe gain 10,000 for school. I was told (from other people) I couldn't do it if I was a full time student, but because I went to the orientation I found out that only applies to 18-23 (don't know why for those ages). Just think I almost didn't do it because of that. So not all of us may know the correct answers, but they will there. OH, and I'm unemployed and not displaced, and they are taking me. At the meeting they didn't say anything about time limits just that if you were displaced to bring the paperwork (layoff notice, notice of termination/plant closure) to the second orientation. That is as best as I can answer that, maybe someone else will know. But if I remember I will try to ask at my meeting and let you what they said.

Contacted the number in our paperwork and found another CPR course. It is through http://www.healtheducationstrategies.com and they are $55 and are twice a week. You can go to their website to find locations and the calendar for times and days. American Heart doesn't have any dates and they said their runs around $70. Through WCCCD it is $61 and have two dates in May. American Red Cross is $70 and have a date at the end of May. Thats is what I have found out as of right now. Hope that helps everyone!!!!

They are only offering them at downriver (which is in May) and Northwest (June 13, way to late) campuses. The class is HLTC 1000. Going to stop by at the school to see if anyone has any info on how long it takes to get the card after the class or if you get it right there. The class at American red cross is even later, starts on May 21 (which I think is too late). I actually wish it was Monday so I can start calling all these medical places to get info and set things up!!!

I've just signed up at WCCCD's CPR, may 15 under their CEU. it is $61 and one day (8 hours). Figured if I find something cheaper I can cancel it. American red cross is $70 and two days (fours hours each). Have to wait until Monday to call the Heart Association and the Health Education Strategies place listed in the paperwork to find out when classes are and how much. Let me know if you find any place cheaper than $61 and what we really need (don't want to show up with the wrong card!!!)

I'm just glad I was able to help!!! I know I've been going crazy, and I actually thought I was going to have to wait until Monday or Tuesday. So I was stunned and very, very happy when I got it Friday and that it was good news!!! I though my GPA was too low too. I actually am taking eng 119 and psy 101 again this semster just so I could raise my GPA ( and actually getting As in both which would have brought up pre-req to 4.0). But I was determined to get in by early 2010 and since spring deadline it June had to do it this semester. Hopefully you will get a happy letter soon!!!!

Well since it is not based on only gpa here's mostly what they took in consideration that I know of: I have a pre-req gpa 3.5 (Overall 3.8), transfered 6 credits (eng & psy), Net was: compos 78% & compre 73%, no other medical background (though I did work at a chiropractic office and that was one of my references). Hope that helps you figure out if you have a good chance of getting a happy letter(well a few days before you actually get the letter)!!!

God-is-love, Just wondering which Detroit center you went to. I just got accepted into a nursing program that starts in the Fall (but taking some of the Co-req in the summer so I can just concentrate on nursing classes), so i would like to try to get funding (though I think summer will not be included, so will try for the fall). And you seem to be getting very fast results. Thanks for any info you could give.

I say take both, I'm taking Patho online right now, with four other classes, and I'm getting A's. My online class just requires tests (and he gives you all the test questions to print up and do on your own before to have during the exam) and case studies. Plus you can take the tests as many times as you want until you are happy with the grade. There are only 3 case studies which are not hard and only worth 1 point each. So if anyone has any low cost places I can go to (for Titer, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Hepatitis boosters, 10 panel drug test, physical exam, and TB test) please share. I'm also waiting for THE letter (crossing fingers), and I registered for summer classes just in case I get in. I only had a 3.5/ 3.6 (can't remember right now, just know it's not a 3.7), I too am fixing my gpa this semester, didn't want to take a chance.
