  1. They are probably waiting until they get all of the acceptance letters out to give you other information. With our group they accepted everyone at once, and they actually called us to let us know. We got the packet a week later. So I don't know about the different groups. I CAN tell you though that all of the stuff is available online, as far as scrubs and stuff. You can get your penlight and scissors at any uniform place, but the only place we found the orange scrubs was near the medical center downtown, and at Uniform Outlet off of Delany Rd in LaMarque. They do have them at the bookstore, and they already have the patch on them. The patch just says "UTMB School of Nursing." You might as well buy them at the bookstore, because if you save money by getting them elsewhere, you have to then spend money to buy the patch and then more to get it sewed on. Getting them at the bookstore is easier, faster, and its about the same amount of money. It takes awhile to update on Econnect fyi.
  2. Aww congrats to those of you who got your acceptance letters today. For those who didn't, don't give up hope yet, with our class they took a few days to notify everyone. If you do not get accepted this round, apply again. I didn't get in the first time I applied to UTMB. Someone mentioned Dr. E at San Jac for Patho...he's awesome. Hard, but you will learn a ton and it will definitely help you your first semester. Again, congrats! I'll probably be one of the senior students helping out at your orientation :-)
  3. Kelly2010, Yes, the first semester definitely takes up a big portion of your life. It IS do-able, you just have to have excellent time management skills. That is probably the most important thing. I recommend getting a big planner the first couple days of class and writing EVERYthing in it. Your first semester may be different, but my schedule was Monday 9am-5pm (lecture/theory), Tuesday 9-5 (lecture/theory), Wednesday (lab) 9am-12, Thursday clinical 6:30am-4:30pm, Friday (lab) 9am-12. Like I said, the incoming class may be different. The clinicals were on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, and your second lab day would depend on what day you did NOT have clinical. Clinicals don't start until the 4th week of class. Also, just some other advice...if you get an opportunity to take pathophysiology over the summer, I would go ahead and do it. It won't help as a credit where you would test out of it like in other college courses, but would definitely help you prepare for pathopharm (pathophysiology/pharmacology...its your first semester, and its a 4 hour lecture. Its probably the most difficult class you'll take, but I only tell you this so you guys know what you're getting into. Again, its do-able, its just time-consuming). Hope this helps.
  4. Hey everyone.... I started at UTMB in January, and am about to finish my first semester. If any of you guys have questions, feel free to ask, send me a personal message, post here, whatever.
  5. In Texas that is a direct violation against the BON Section 301.251, which clearly states that it is illegal to present yourself as a nurse if you are not (or as a cna for that matter, but that is a different section...301.4525). I'm not sure about other state's specific laws but I'm sure that every state has a similar law. She should report them to that state's BON, they would investigate the incident and would deal with it accordingly. I just did a class presentation on this subject in my BSN program, that's why I can give you a specific reference :-)
  6. skygirl, there are people in this group in both programs, the bacc2 and traditional.
  7. thanks shirley, do you know the date that email was sent? i am trying to find it in my inbox
  8. Hey everyone... So I am getting all of the PDA software online now, but I was wondering if yall knew what exactly we needed. When you click on the skyscape link, and then click our program, it has the list of 'required' software....but that's a lot! do we really need all 8 programs? Has anyone talked to anyone at utmb about this? it just seems like a lot to me. If we have to buy all of that, then that's fine, I just want to make sure before I spend more money... Also, I am having difficulty finding UT scrubs outside of the bookstore. Have yall had any luck? I did get a lab coat at the uniform place off of delany rd in la marque where all of the outlet stores are, but the only UT scrubs they had were 3XL.
  9. i was told by enrollment services that they did not have an insurance plan that they offered through utmb, but i know i've seen posts about one. anyone have any info on that? it might be cheaper to enroll in one offered by the school than my private insurance now...
  10. Hello AVaughn! Welcome to our group! we have been pretty frustrated with utmb as well, everything seems disorganized and we're all trying to figure out what our lives for the next year are going to entail. there seems to be so many random deadlines too. they're still getting out financial aid info, i'm sure you'll get everything you need soon.
  11. After the hurricane, a lot of apartment complexes jacked up their rent to cover damages, so the places that I would recommend to you might be higher than they were when I lived there. I used to live at Green Oaks, its off of Highway 3 and Pineloch in Webster/Clear Lake area. I really liked living there, i want to say their smallest one bedroom is around $520. You take 45 south to the Clear Lake City Boulevard/Friendswood exit, and take a left at the light so that you are going under the bridge. When you get to highway 3, take a right, and then a right at the next light (that is Pineloch, it will be about a mile). The leasing office is right there on the corner. That one is a good location because you get onto 45 and then its a straight shot down to the island. The problem with a lot of places in the Clear Lake area is the construction that is going on by 45/Nasa Rd 1, it was supposed to be done already but its taking awhile. So I would avoid anything on Nasa Rd 1, but there are a ton of apartment complexes around here. Message me if you have a list of a few you want to check out and I'll tell you what I know about them. To answer your question I live in Dickinson but work in CL. So I am off the island, but I would like to move out back to Clear Lake. That area (League City/Webster/Clear Lake/Kemah/Seabrook) is a good area, there are tons of people, and its a good middle area between the island and med center. Hope this helps.
  12. VRA21 I would check out places in Clear Lake and League City, they are in between Galveston and the Medical Center. What is your price range, there are a lot of choices around here of all prices...
  13. Does anyone know if we have one or two clinicals for generic? i thought we just had one, but on the schedule she emailed to us it looks like there are two. that schedule is crazy! i don't know how i'm going to work....still trying to figure that one out. even if i know what 'group' i'm in, i can have a better idea, but i bet they don't tell us that until orientation.
  14. vickie, we're all over the place, it really just depends on your financial situation and how much you want to drive i guess. we will be doing clinicals everywhere. personally, i would hate to drive from jersey village everyday, but that's just me. you could always just check out places and see if anything jumps out at you. also, whoever is looking for a place, i know that local apartments on the island put up ads for cheap rates, specials, etc... moving the first couple of weeks of school would suck, but it might be worth it to wait to see what our schedules are going to be like. speaking of schedules, we know we have a class monday from 1-5, and tuesday from 9am-noon. the other ones we don't know yet, and that's only because somebody called and was able to find out because they will miss one of the days of orientation. lcap, i live with my boyfriend and i just take over the kitchen table when i need to study, he knows to stay out of the kitchen when i have an exam :-P
  15. Ms Sealy....I am going tomorrow to give them my paperwork and I'll ask about the CPR while I'm there. I got my financial aid package yesterday. More than I expected, it will cover tuition and books, but not enough to cover monthly bills, so I'll have to look into private loans too. BUT, like I said, it was a lot more than I expected so that was great news. Whoever was asking about the FAFSA, you can apply online, and you give them your income info from last year, while choosing "2009-2010," and that would apply to our spring and summer semester. In January or whenever you do your taxes from this current year, then you will put "2010-2011" for the school year for financial aid, which would apply to our fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters.
  16. Ms. Sealy will you send it to me too? Either here or on that other site :-P Thanks! I got CPR certified in April of this year, but the lady didn't sign one of the cards...so when I did my CNA at COM, they almost didn't take it. I'll talk to D about it, but I want to make sure I have an option if I DO have to take it again...
  17. What are the other two class times then? I know somebody posted a couple of them... I don't think we'll know the clinical times for awhile.
  18. Good afternoon everyone... Do any of you happen to know a timeframe of when classes are? I know they register us, but I seem to remember in our info session them saying classes were generally all day Monday, most of Tuesday, and online class, and then whenever they schedule you for clinicals. I'm just trying to figure out a potential work schedule so I can figure out what I'm doing as far as that is concerned. Thanks! Kris
  19. hey everybody! hope finals are going ok for those who are in the last stretch of the semester... good luck! good luck kgoodson, i'm crossing my fingers for you!!!
  20. Hi! Welcome to the group! Good luck everyone with any finals you have this week... (I have three exams this week and a project due tomorrow, then finals next week BLAH)....I'm sure you all are cramming too, everyone get sleep (cuz we won't get any for the next year and a half haha) There are so many forms to fill out in our packets! Yikes! I need to call in between my exams this week though, one of the forms said I do not have English 2 (I do, I wonder what happened...?)
  21. Happy Turkey Day everybody! :hrnsmlys:
  22. Yay Katie!!! We knew you'd be fine! :-)
  23. I think you're right, I'm just worried about not being able to pay for school, I've come too far to not be able to pay my tuition. Who else was it that also had a degree, we were talking about our limited aid...? Maybe we'll get a visit from the tuition fairy :tinkbll:
  24. does that mean they are not offering ANY financial aid for the generic? maybe i should have done the bacc2 program afterall, if they got 5k. i chose the generic instead so that i could still work. i'm all confused, but too late now huh? i'll make it all work
  25. Jade, I'm sorry to hear that :-( The first time I applied to UTMB (a year and a half ago, right before the hurricane) I got rejected. It sucked, so I understand your frustration. You have to just remember what it is that you want to do, and keep at it, don't give up. Also you can look into ADN programs in the area (San Jac, COM, Galveston College, etc...) They are all good programs and are a lot cheaper, and even though you come out with an associates instead of a bachelor's, the pay isn't much of a difference and most of the people I talked to with ADNs didn't feel that they were any less prepared than if they had a BSN. Honestly, if I didn't get into UTMB I was planning on going to San Jac. Who knows, that may still be an option if I can't get the funds for UTMB. Also, if you get your ADN and get on at a good hospital, most of them will pay for you to continue on in school and get your BSN. My point is, don't give up hope, keep your options open. I got a lot of info from all the local ADN programs, if you need advice or clarity on the different programs shoot me an email and I'll help however I can.
