UTMB FALL 2010 (University of Texas Medical Branch)
They are probably waiting until they get all of the acceptance letters out to give you other information. With our group they accepted everyone at once, and they actually called us to let us know. We got the packet a week later. So I don't know about the different groups. I CAN tell you though that all of the stuff is available online, as far as scrubs and stuff. You can get your penlight and scissors at any uniform place, but the only place we found the orange scrubs was near the medical center downtown, and at Uniform Outlet off of Delany Rd in LaMarque. They do have them at the bookstore, and they already have the patch on them. The patch just says "UTMB School of Nursing." You might as well buy them at the bookstore, because if you save money by getting them elsewhere, you have to then spend money to buy the patch and then more to get it sewed on. Getting them at the bookstore is easier, faster, and its about the same amount of money. It takes awhile to update on Econnect fyi.

UTMB FALL 2010 (University of Texas Medical Branch)
Aww congrats to those of you who got your acceptance letters today. For those who didn't, don't give up hope yet, with our class they took a few days to notify everyone. If you do not get accepted this round, apply again. I didn't get in the first time I applied to UTMB. Someone mentioned Dr. E at San Jac for Patho...he's awesome. Hard, but you will learn a ton and it will definitely help you your first semester. Again, congrats! I'll probably be one of the senior students helping out at your orientation :-)

UTMB FALL 2010 (University of Texas Medical Branch)
Kelly2010, Yes, the first semester definitely takes up a big portion of your life. It IS do-able, you just have to have excellent time management skills. That is probably the most important thing. I recommend getting a big planner the first couple days of class and writing EVERYthing in it. Your first semester may be different, but my schedule was Monday 9am-5pm (lecture/theory), Tuesday 9-5 (lecture/theory), Wednesday (lab) 9am-12, Thursday clinical 6:30am-4:30pm, Friday (lab) 9am-12. Like I said, the incoming class may be different. The clinicals were on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, and your second lab day would depend on what day you did NOT have clinical. Clinicals don't start until the 4th week of class. Also, just some other advice...if you get an opportunity to take pathophysiology over the summer, I would go ahead and do it. It won't help as a credit where you would test out of it like in other college courses, but would definitely help you prepare for pathopharm (pathophysiology/pharmacology...its your first semester, and its a 4 hour lecture. Its probably the most difficult class you'll take, but I only tell you this so you guys know what you're getting into. Again, its do-able, its just time-consuming). Hope this helps.

Is it legal to call yourself "Nurse" when you in fact are not?
In Texas that is a direct violation against the BON Section 301.251, which clearly states that it is illegal to present yourself as a nurse if you are not (or as a cna for that matter, but that is a different section...301.4525). I'm not sure about other state's specific laws but I'm sure that every state has a similar law. She should report them to that state's BON, they would investigate the incident and would deal with it accordingly. I just did a class presentation on this subject in my BSN program, that's why I can give you a specific reference :-)

UTMB Spring 2010
Hey everyone... So I am getting all of the PDA software online now, but I was wondering if yall knew what exactly we needed. When you click on the skyscape link, and then click our program, it has the list of 'required' software....but that's a lot! do we really need all 8 programs? Has anyone talked to anyone at utmb about this? it just seems like a lot to me. If we have to buy all of that, then that's fine, I just want to make sure before I spend more money... Also, I am having difficulty finding UT scrubs outside of the bookstore. Have yall had any luck? I did get a lab coat at the uniform place off of delany rd in la marque where all of the outlet stores are, but the only UT scrubs they had were 3XL.

UTMB Spring 2010
i was told by enrollment services that they did not have an insurance plan that they offered through utmb, but i know i've seen posts about one. anyone have any info on that? it might be cheaper to enroll in one offered by the school than my private insurance now...

UTMB Spring 2010
Hello AVaughn! Welcome to our group! we have been pretty frustrated with utmb as well, everything seems disorganized and we're all trying to figure out what our lives for the next year are going to entail. there seems to be so many random deadlines too. they're still getting out financial aid info, i'm sure you'll get everything you need soon.

UTMB Spring 2010
After the hurricane, a lot of apartment complexes jacked up their rent to cover damages, so the places that I would recommend to you might be higher than they were when I lived there. I used to live at Green Oaks, its off of Highway 3 and Pineloch in Webster/Clear Lake area. I really liked living there, i want to say their smallest one bedroom is around $520. You take 45 south to the Clear Lake City Boulevard/Friendswood exit, and take a left at the light so that you are going under the bridge. When you get to highway 3, take a right, and then a right at the next light (that is Pineloch, it will be about a mile). The leasing office is right there on the corner. That one is a good location because you get onto 45 and then its a straight shot down to the island. The problem with a lot of places in the Clear Lake area is the construction that is going on by 45/Nasa Rd 1, it was supposed to be done already but its taking awhile. So I would avoid anything on Nasa Rd 1, but there are a ton of apartment complexes around here. Message me if you have a list of a few you want to check out and I'll tell you what I know about them. To answer your question I live in Dickinson but work in CL. So I am off the island, but I would like to move out back to Clear Lake. That area (League City/Webster/Clear Lake/Kemah/Seabrook) is a good area, there are tons of people, and its a good middle area between the island and med center. Hope this helps.

VRA21 I would check out places in Clear Lake and League City, they are in between Galveston and the Medical Center. What is your price range, there are a lot of choices around here of all prices...

UTMB Spring 2010
Does anyone know if we have one or two clinicals for generic? i thought we just had one, but on the schedule she emailed to us it looks like there are two. that schedule is crazy! i don't know how i'm going to work....still trying to figure that one out. even if i know what 'group' i'm in, i can have a better idea, but i bet they don't tell us that until orientation.

UTMB Spring 2010
vickie, we're all over the place, it really just depends on your financial situation and how much you want to drive i guess. we will be doing clinicals everywhere. personally, i would hate to drive from jersey village everyday, but that's just me. you could always just check out places and see if anything jumps out at you. also, whoever is looking for a place, i know that local apartments on the island put up ads for cheap rates, specials, etc... moving the first couple of weeks of school would suck, but it might be worth it to wait to see what our schedules are going to be like. speaking of schedules, we know we have a class monday from 1-5, and tuesday from 9am-noon. the other ones we don't know yet, and that's only because somebody called and was able to find out because they will miss one of the days of orientation. lcap, i live with my boyfriend and i just take over the kitchen table when i need to study, he knows to stay out of the kitchen when i have an exam :-P

UTMB Spring 2010
Ms Sealy....I am going tomorrow to give them my paperwork and I'll ask about the CPR while I'm there. I got my financial aid package yesterday. More than I expected, it will cover tuition and books, but not enough to cover monthly bills, so I'll have to look into private loans too. BUT, like I said, it was a lot more than I expected so that was great news. Whoever was asking about the FAFSA, you can apply online, and you give them your income info from last year, while choosing "2009-2010," and that would apply to our spring and summer semester. In January or whenever you do your taxes from this current year, then you will put "2010-2011" for the school year for financial aid, which would apply to our fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters.
