Hey everyone! Here's the long story short, I am a new graduate (May 2010) Started work as an RN in the beginning of July. I work in the med center in Houston as a clinical nurse. I absolutely hate working weekends and holidays. I know I signed up for that but it really gets me down for the whole week leading up to it that I can't pep myself up or get out of the rut. Anyways I applied for some school nursing jobs, because I have always been interested ( i used to want to be a teacher). A school that's 15 minutes away (and where I don't have to pay 65 dollars per month to park!) called and I have an interview with the principal and the head of the school health dept on the same day. It's 32 hours a week, no weekends or holidays and I think the summer off as well. These are all great perks, I'm just curious about what exactly a school nurse does and how the pay is in Houston. On the post it said like 44,500-70,000 so that seems fine but i'm sure I'll find out when I go to interview. Also I talked to some girls a work and they really think I should stay and get more clinical experience which I know is good, but I know I don't want to stay there forever so why not take a good opportunity if it falls in my lap? PVT worked for me! Took the NCLEX Monday, 75 questions, checked as soon as I got home (about 20 minutes later) and a million times there after and got the good pop up every time! Checked the quick results today and it was a pass!!!!

Hello everyone! I start my accelerated nursing program on Tuesday, so I have been spending a lot of time on these boards and for some reason I am comparing nursing school to pledging a sorority. When i graduated with my BS i was in a sorority (probably one of the most fun times of my life!) and all i hear about is nurses eating their young and picking on the weak. I'm sure this doesn't happen all the time but I feel like it's going to be like the sorority all over again, just not fun! The older have the power over the younger, blah blah. Does anyone else feel like it was like that? I may be WAY off base, my imagination is running wild!

I'm having my boyfriend drop me off because I live close too! We're like young kids being dropped off :) It saves money and stress of parking, and will give us a little extra sleep!

Hello everyone! I am starting an Accelerated BSN program in just over 2 weeks and I was curious about studying tips. I've always been one that gets distracted easily, by thoughts, noises, etc. while studying. In my first BSN it was never much of an issue because I got my BS in advertising which was mostly creative, designing and ideas and never tests and stuff (no studying involved). While taking prereqs for NS I had to take harder classes, Micro, A&P I and II and others, all of which I got A's in but i used an overlearning method. I made note cards and said it over and over until I could recite the card with no mistakes. I would like to try other things, so do you have any tips for what kind of studying worked for you? Hey Ellie! I am working until the 21st and finishing up classes as well. Busy busy already! What's the link to the FB group? I want to join! Can you PM it to me? I haven't bought anything yet, I am trying SO HARD to wait until orientation is over and until i hear about FA and Scholarships. What have you bought already? I can't wait to register either, but sadly my class at HCC is still going and grades won't be posted for another week at least. Oh well! I need to be more positive, I will make it, I have no other choice! It's time to put my positive pants on : )

Haha i know! We had one guy there when we interviewed, did you have any in your group? I sometimes think I got in for the interview because my name is Alex and they probably thought I was a guy because it's spelled Alexandre! Oh well, however it happened it did : )

I know! 9-4 is a long time for an orientation. I hear that we meet all the professors, meet with our advisors, get book lists etc. It's also the same for the traditional program, so there will be about 200 people I think. I hope we get lunch! I won't make it all day I am curious about the ages too. At my interview session, everyone looked like they were in the same age range as me, mid 20's. But I am sure it will differ somewhat.

I think we all feel that way! I can't wait for orientation, I know it will give us a better understanding of everything. I wonder how often we will be in classes, when clinicals will start and how many hours a week we will be in a hospital. I know we only have a week, but it feels like forever away!

I think that's an awesome idea! We are definitely going to be together a lot and start study groups and stuff. I'm up for drinks (since it may be the last in a long time!) : )

Thanks for the info! I went to Central Michigan University (moved to Houston 2 years ago). I got my B.S. in Journalism and Advertising. I always wanted to be a nurse, but got swept away in creative things at school. I love advertising but I can't live my life sitting at a computer all day long. I love people and have always had the desire to make them feel better so I knew it was time for a change. I didn't think I would get into the accelerated program with all the people that apply. I'm still in shock and super excited and even more scared I won't make it. What about you?

Me too! I work at Chevron and I'm excited to just focus on school. I know i'm not going to have too much time to relax, but it's better than nothing : ) Have you registered yet? I can't because i'm finishing up a prereq and grades haven't been posted yet since finals aren't until next week. So i still have no idea what to expect!

Pinch Pennies! I will be repaying student loans that I took out for my first B.S. for 30 years! I sadly have a mortgage with no house to show for it : ( Now I am going back to school for Nursing and I won't be able to work to cover any of my bills! I am hoping i get some Financial Aid and Scholarships but I won't find out for a week or two....I'm hoping to not have to take out more than I have. I would rather pinch pennies, stress for two years and enjoy a debt free many many years there after. It's so worth it, I just wish I would have done the same : (

I'm at work right now;) I am working until the 21st and I can't wait til I'm done. I am thinking about working part time (very few hours) at this job that I can study at. I know it will be tough but I am nervous about money, especially not knowing if I got any scholarship or financial aid. What are you doing?

I'm thinking of kind of dressing up, but not like for an interview. I was thinking some black pants and a niceish shirt and some flats (it's going to be a long day!) I want to wear jeans, but since we're meeting professors/advisors I want to give a good impression. I wish they would have told us!

Hi everyone! I too was accepted into the accelerated and I talked to both the financial aid office and Rhonda and they both said that information would be sent out mid May. Not much time huh? I hope I get something because I am stressing bad! I haven't applied for loans yet because I am waiting to see if I get any money. I think I may just apply and then repay the money depending on how much I get. Orientation is only a week away! Do any of you know what you're wearing? Also, I can't register for classes because I am finishing up a class this semester so we can't register until they receive those grades : ( What is the schedule looking like as far as days we will be on campus? Hello everyone! I am going back to school for my second degree in nursing and got into a traditional program although I applied for an accelerated program. But then I got a phone call yesterday saying I did actually get into to accelerated program and i start in 4 weeks!! I am very excited but now I only have a month to mentally prepare myself, when I previously thought I had until September. So here is my question to you, nurses, students, and anyone with advice.... What do you wish you knew before beginning school? Any good books you suggest? Any material I should study up on that would come in handy? Thank you so much!

Hey everyone! I applied for the UT Houston Accelerated program and was accepted into the traditional, which was fine but not exactly what I wanted! However, I got a call yesterday saying they want me in the accelerated program, yay! So now I only have 4 weeks from today until I start. Any advice? I still need to get my physical, finish up my last pre-reqs that i'm in now, and take infant CPR ( i have adult and child, but for some reason not infant. I'm thinking about doing an online course for the rest, do you think they will accept that?) Anyways we have orientation on the 13th and I need to start preparing myself mentally. What did you do to prepare yourself? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated : )

That is crazy! I work in the Oil Industry now and it is very slowly killing me! I can't wait to begin at UT in August and get my second bachelors : ) Are you still in Houston? If so are you working in the Med Center? I know that empathy is a huge part of being a good nurse, it shows you care! I am so nervous that I won't be able to do things because I hate hurting people, but I know I will be fine once I get going.
