The "I want to be called dr" comes from a very few individual NPs who have advocated for just that....remember , very few NPs said this but the medical community at large responded in a very big way. I think the other part of people not supporting the dnpas a degree stems from Mundinger herself who equated her newly minted dnps as equal to physicians..not a smart thing to do either. Also, the majority of NPs out there see it as not being what its touted to be..terminal degree for nps. It needs, again, hard science and patient management components. Most nps don't see the purpose in going back for the dnp as it adds almost nothing to a np's practice. BUT, this doesn't give people the right to denigrate you for your choices. I don't support the dnp in its current form but a persons choice of education is theirs and no one elses.

Is there a reason that you're going back to school after your master's? Job requirement? Etc? The dnp is not a requirement as many think it to be...

I haven't said anything about not treating patients with dignity. I think that should be pure common sense. We, as adults, shouldn't need "fluff" courses to teach that, we do need the same type of curriculum used in PA school due to its rigor and the constant need to know more. I was lucky to have a NP prgm without the fluff (UPenn) and it was great! Another thing that the PA curric. can teach us is the need for continuity from prgm to prgm. There's so much difference in NP prgms that its beyond ridiculous. BC- no worries, just tired and "******" :~)))

Just curious to know how many of you all that have declined vaccinations have ever cared for a child who died as a result of not having them? I have and the saddest fact is that it was entirely the parents fault for not having done the RIGHT thing in vaccinating their children. I certainly hope that none of you have to experience this with either a patient or your own children. I've seen it too many time in the picu. A single childs death isn't worth believing all that you read and hear on the internet.......

No hostility here..just experience talking. When you've been in your profession more than a year, you will understand. I don't treat patients like they're ignorant. I didn't say that.. What I did say was that patients don't have the same knowledge that we have and couldn't know if they were being treated approriately. This can be seen every day across the states and elsewhere in pediatrics. How many times does it take to get across the fact that viruses don't need abx? If a parent has no idea about treating something as simple as a cold, how can you expect them to know if they received the appropriate treatment for something more complex like a pneumonia or etc? Also, your comments about my attitude are unfounded. Sounds like more backlash from being a man in a female dominated profession.

I guess all of your patients are in the medical field? If not, they have ZERO idea about standard or substandard care. These are concepts we learn in our training and apply daily to patient care. The average Joe Schmo relies on their providers to treat them appropriately. How would an average person know if they were prescribed the right therapy or not? They rely on their doctor, pa, or np to tell them. I definitely don't want the most likeable provider for my wife and kids...I want the one who knows what they're doing in treating patients!

This is exactly what happened in Houston. Anti union nurses being forced to wage their campaign from a closet space somewhere in the hospital. You can believe what you read in the papers...

So this is a HCA facility? Same chain in Houston that organized? Ahh, now I see the light.....

Why not PA school? Better education, more clinical hours, and more patient interaction. Its a win-win situation.

I would have a very hard time believing that any practitioner, PA, NP, DO, MD, could do their job well in their first year with no experience beforehand. With regard to a DO or MD not being ready for practice right out of school, you're way off the mark. I have worked with many docs right out of school and they are FAR more prepared than any NP or PA is right out of their schooling. The reason for this is the extraordinary amount of clinical time they spend in training! NPs need more clinical time as well as a futherance of the hard sciences.

#1 I'm not about denying anyones right to collectively organize and bargain. I am against unions. My opinion, not others. #2 Smugly proud...Hmmm. #3 What union people think of me has no bearing on me or my practice. Sticks and stones....... #4 My politics...I have no politics. I don't vote by choice in any election, presidential or otherwise. #5 Yes. I would definitely cross a picket line at my hospital or any other where patients need care! If that makes it harder for nurses here or there to organize, so be it. Its not about money or unions, its about caring for those who need it when union idiots walk out on their patients.

Your assumption is right nor would I ever. Even if NNU shows up on our doorstep, I wouldn't have to pay their dues due to RTW state..

It's not stealing if they're not at the bedside where they belong.

I agree wholeheartedly! I went to a Peds Crit Care NP prgm at UPenn with no fluff! They cut it out! If I were to do this again, I would definitely have gone PA for no other reason than the education they receive. No fluff. All patient management and hard science..you know...the stuff that actually helps us do our jobs? How does Orem's theory of BS help you manage a critcally ill pt...it won't. Good luck to you.

More unions = more strikes = more money for those of us who work strike hospitals.

Who gives a rats a** what the canadians think! Look how badly they've screwed up their own healthcare system. I think its shameful to walk out on patients in a strike, so There.

The only positive aspect of unions in Texas is that it will be easier access to good money when they go on strike for one ridiculous reason or another! I hear working hospitals on strike is really good money. Until now, we would have to travel to do this but now...........

I would be interested to see how many nurses in Texas, who are unionized, continue to pay their dues after the first year? If I were a bettin man, I would say that the unions would start losing money after the first few months of drawing those dues out of paychecks when people get tired of not getting anything for their money.
