i believe that you'll only hate nursing if you pursued this profession with unwarranted reasons... it is already a given that this profession has many frustrations (what profession doesn't??) if you really love what you're doing, no matter how tough it gets, you still get going... however, if you don't like what you're doing, all the frustrations would eventually build up and ... who knows what you will do or what you will become!! since the demands of nursing is high, it is vital that nursing school should impose their standards diligently... hey, we are dealing with life...!! personally, i had one clinical instructor who is so nasty!! her shouts of demeaning adjectives to the student nurses whenever they made a mistake could be heard all over the ward and the adjacent ward... she is fond of calling names like.. (you're so stupid, you're not fit to become a nurse, you don't have a common sense)... charts go flying all over the floor whenever there's an error... it was the most horrible experience of my life - BUT it was also one of my productive years... it was because of her that i wept a lot (intermittent crying for over 24 hours)... BUT, i learned how to approach doctors and not be intimidated by them... i learned the hard way!!... after that, most of my classmates would convene and instead of crying over it (like we used to) we end up laughing about it afterwards!! counting from this day, i will be graduating in less than 2 months and still i kept thinking... why did i took up nursing?? is this normal?? even if my first choice of career is not nursing, i still think that i could not imagine myself in other profession... pretty confusing...

Nursing...nursing...nursing... it's the only course that's been roaring here in the Philippines!! there has been a "flood":eek: of student nurses, limited clinical instructors:stone and crowded nurse's station :chuckle because of the clinical exposure of the students... Not to mention that some doctors are also taking up nursing :roll that scenario is all for the hope that we'll someday have a better life compared to what we have here in my country... now, here i am, reading the CONS of being a nurse... (although the situations that i've read is not as bad as the health care system we have here)... it still is quite ironic

i've always wanted to be a flight stewardess... it's quite a chance... anyone who could help me with the requirements for flight nursing...?? thanks!!

eversince i was a child, i never wanted to be in ANY medical course... but, here i am... already in my last year of Nursing School... i joined an extemporaneous speaking contest in my school and my question was: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE AND GREATEST REWARD OF A NURSE IN TODAY'S AGE AND ERA... i blew it BIGTIME...!! :eek: i answered "my own personal challenge and greatest reward" i was "selfish" and i did not take the answer in general... it just showed that unconsciously, i still don't want to be in nursing... although i find extreme pleasure in caring for patients to some degree and knowing that i made them comfortable and i did something good... ( i like having my duty in PSYCH,OR-DR,MICU) my heart is still crying out... i'm not for nursing... i want to bail out... but i love my parents and i don't want to disappoint them... i know that they just want what's best for me... i've been having ambivalent feelings since then... it's just terrible...

NO fake/long nails ? definitely no...even with proper handwashing, there's still a tendency for the transfer of germs... and accidental "scraping" of the patient... it's certainly not a good reason for the "lazy" nurse not to do her job for her nails might get chipped. perfume? i think that it's quite ok - only in moderation. just so the patients will not smell our stink after the long hours of work and sweat. smoking? it's just so ironic that we do HEALTH TEACHING about "quit smoking" blah blah blah because of blah blah blah ... only to have ourselves also smoking... sheessh!! make-up? only in moderation... just not to look pale!! it's sometimes horrifying for patients if they see their nurses paler than they are then they would think that "how can this nurse care for me if she looks as if she's about to faint" i would like to suggest, COLOR CODING of scrub suits for a certain department... and... i hope that it would also apply for the doctors NAMEPLATE... please!! thanks!!!!!!

i really envy your system... at least, you get to have your inputs in a computer... in the hospital where i am presently having my hospital exposure as a student nurse, we are still in the "medieval" (hehehe) way of carrying out doctor's orders... i think that policies about how to process a doctor's order can be learned, in due time... it gets to be pretty much routinary after a while... what i really don't like about this "doctor's order thing" is when you CAN'T understand what they write!! they keep on scribbling their orders and "most" of their penmanship is just terrible!! i know that it's our responsibility to "ask" if we can't understand their order... but it' just so unfair when we get blamed...:zzzzz

i really hate to divulge this but...i think that my country's economy also stink when it comes to giving medical assistance to its population... we also have a lot of insurance companies here who requires the beneficiaries to "deposit" a certain amount of money (depending on the company) every month for the next couple of years... only to have your "benefits" returned to you MONTHS after you were already released from the hospital... the processing of the papers for the reimbursement is even preposterously slower than a turtle, especially if you don't have relatives or friends who works in that company to facilitate following up your file... the scenario is even more bleak for those who are in the rural area and those who belong below the poverty line (the indigent people) since they do not even have the money to avail of the membership of the insurance company... more often than not, those people who go into their respective provincial hospital often ends up with even more complications than necessary (mostly avoidable ones) or worst DEATH... IF ONLY they were given the appropriate medical attention that they need, instead of being left alone (or ignored) because of lack of insurance or lack of money... so so so very very sad... that's not even 1/8 of the entire picture of this devastating reality... it gets even more disgusting when i see politicians bickering over each others "wealth" ... making up issues and digging up each other's trash and skeletons-in-the-closet... while the rest of the population slowly die from poverty because of the corruption issue in the government...

being a student nurse, i've always noticed that "most" doctors really do have this certain amount of egoism... it's not just the OR doctors (surgeons)... (no offense to some of my doctor friends) most of them like to "undermine" nurses and always make this biting remarks about "how nurses do a sloppy job"... it's a very sad story... ...now, it's no wonder, many doctors in my country are taking up nursing!!! :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

i know that i'm not yet in the position to say this since i'm only a student nurse and being a student and a professional really means a great difference in between... i am also afraid of racism and i'd rather prefer that everyone could work in harmony, but i know that it's like wishing for the crow to become white... i was taught that as a nurse, one should be flexible and understanding... racism is nasty, but, what the hell!! you didn't go on duty for the "race"... you're there to take care of sick people... give your services, time and effort to those who need it... if they don't like you... TO HELL!! they are not the ones who feed you or takes care of your personal "business... as long as you do good for your fellow human being... what else matters? avoid those who don't do anything good for you... long live nursing...!!

this topic is such a timing for me... i just don't know if i'll be able to express my thoughts and not get it misunderstood...:) i'm a graduating nursing student from iloilo city, philippines and frankly speaking, my parents "suggested" that i take up nursing so that i could go to U.S.A. or London (as long as it's out of my country) after i graduate... i love my birthplace, but our economy right now really sucks... many business firms closes up and employment here is very limited and exclusive... one has to have a backer or someone in that company is a relative in order for someone to be employed... even if you're employed, the employment is on casual basis only and you'd have to renew your contract after 5-6 months... thus, my reason for taking up nursing... now my question is: if i will be granted a visa (US) after i graduate and pass my board exam here in the philippines, will i be able to work as a nursing aide or health care giver while i wait for my CGFNS or state board exam? i really want to work in the "land of opportunity" even for a couple of years just to help out my family here in the Philippines and just come home afterwards... but sometimes, i'm hesitant and scared, what if i will be deported (or something like that) before i could fulfill my family's dream... please help... i would greatly appreciate it:kiss
