  1. Have a look at Assessment Strategies Inc. - Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examiniation to get a better understanding of the exam, official prep guide and predictor tests. I hope this helps.
  2. Thanks for your answers. It appears that nobody knows whether web sites or chatrooms exist which contain actual NCLEX questions. Silverdragon: Thank so much for your response. You have indicated that you have seen nurses lose their license due to cheating. That means they received their license first (presumably after cheating) but then later they were prosecuted for cheating and lost their license? There must be a public record of those cases. Would you have a reference? As to the Korean computer test center that was shut down due to cheating, is there a reference for that and has that center reopened now? There are many Koreans who did not cheat? In Korea, did they have a web site or chatroom disclosing live NCLEX questions? If cheating took place at US centers, were they shut down? From my original post, I see that the GMAT test had sneek peak sites based in China. How is it that the NCLEX is so safe from the same fate? Thanks, Joyfull
  3. It appears that computer tests are being breached more frequently. I am wondering if this is the case for the NCLEX. I don't really believe that there are because they must realize how important that exam is for public protection. But on the other hand, I would have said the same of the GMAT test and yet they are experiencing serious breaches. Does anyone know of websites that contain sneak peeks for NCLEX questions? http://www.businessweek.com/print/bschools/content/dec2009/bs2009123_558900.htm Crackdown on China GMAT Cheating Business school applicants who use Chinese Web sites to get a sneak peek at GMAT questions are having their scores revoked and being banned from retaking the test By Alison Damast Students who have tried to get a leg up on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) by visiting Web sites carrying illegally obtained test-preparation material may soon come to regret their actions. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is aggressively pursuing more and more Web sites that illegally provide copyrighted GMAT materials to test-takers, as well as using high-tech gadgets to catch "proxy" test-takers who are hired to take the exam in place of applicants, the organization says.
  4. That would be great...thanks...
  5. Could you PM the contact info for Andrew and his co-instructor to me as well? Thanks so much.
  6. Taken from: http://ca.geocities.com/ipromiseposter/ipromise.html "In the spring of 2003, the SARS virus quietly arrived, unannounced, in Toronto from Hong Kong. The virus took advantage of our multiculturalism. Toronto had never heard of SARS when it arrived. The virus took advantage of that too. First, a mother who had recently returned from Hong Kong died and then 5 days later, her son died. Toronto newspapers began to report about voluntary quarantines. Newspapers worldwide began to talk about Toronto. The reports began to displace the events in Iraq from the headlines. With each update the news sounded more serious. When the World Health Organization announced a travel ban for all but essential travel, it seemed that Toronto's fate was sealed. It became one of the least desirable places in the world to travel to. The newspapers began to report daily counts of total probable SARS cases, the new infections and the numbers in quarantine. ...Nurses who worked at administrative positions said the situation was serious. Nurses who worked in the regulatory bodies said the situation was very serious. Nurses who worked in the community and in the city hospitals said it was extremely serious. They were wearing multiple masks, multiple gowns and multiple gloves. They said that the masks were not good enough. They said that some nurses were infected by the virus. Exhausted nurses taking care of sick nurses. Nurses on life support. When was it going to stop? I imagined a nurse cradling a sick nurse who was cradling a very sick nurse who was cradling ....and on and on. The news reported updates to the death toll and thousands were now quarantined with a new outbreak in Toronto. The streets of Chinatown were quiet. I went there to lend support and saw just a few kids walking along Dundas. One was wearing a New York Fire Department sweatshirt. I remembered the firefighters in New York. There were firefighters saving firefighters. So why are they different than our nurses? - Exhausted New York firefighters were profiled with their sooty faces. Their faces showed their character. Exhausted nurses wearing multiple masks don't have visible faces. - Photographers surrounded the exhausted firefighters. Photographers could not go into SARS units. Hospitals had closed their doors to all visitors including photographers. - Citizens of New York offered free lunches to the overworked firefighters. Overworked nurses could not leave their SARS units for a lunch break without risking the spread of infection to the citizens of Toronto. - Firefighters paused to take a drink of water. Nurses working in SARS units could not pause for a sip of water without removing their masks and possibly becoming infected. - Firefighters took soot home with them and their families helped them wash all traces of it away. Nurses took the virus home and could not hug them for fear of infecting them. Some did infect their loved ones and their loved ones died. - Firefighter's families were celebrated by their community. Nurse's families were quarantined and shunned. - Firefighters were heroes. Nurses were nurses. " Image of a Nurse during the crisis: http://ca.geocities.com/ipromiseposter/ipromise.jpg
  7. Despite the fear and unknown risks and the fact that nurses were succumbing to the SARS virus, many nurses in Canada volunteered to work in isolation SARS units fully knowing that they could become a victim. A great number were asked to continue to wear their masks at home to prevent possible transmission to their family. Many nurses became sick and some died. The attached link describes the response of nurses in Toronto to the SARS crisis: http://ca.geocities.com/ipromiseposter/ As the pledge from the International Council of Nurses in Geneva indicates on the nursing poster in the link, the nurses in Toronto lived up to ideals within the profession without hesitation. That pledge, in part reads as follows: "In the full knowledge of the task I am undertaking, I Promise to take care of the sick with all the skill and understanding I possess, without regard to race, creed, colour, politics, or social status, sparing no effort to conserve life, to alleviate suffering, and promote health." It is quite a profession.
  8. According to the Department of Labor: Median annual earnings of registered nurses were $48,090 in 2002. The middle 50 percent earned between $40,140 and $57,490. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $33,970, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $69,670. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of registered nurses in 2002 were as follows: Employment services $55,980 General medical and surgical hospitals 49,190 Home health care services 45,890 Offices of physicians 44,870 Nursing care facilities 43,850 http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos083.htm
  9. I find it difficult to speak up when I see verbal abuse directed to a third party. I often think, "Should I choose to get involved." How we respond tells a lot about us. Every choice has its consequences. Martin Niemöller was a preacher in Germany's in the 30's. At first, he did not speak out. But as he saw group after group taken away, he spoke out and he was arrested and send to a concentraton camp. "No One Left" is a statement often attributed to Niemöller and it describes the tragic result of choosing to remain silent. First they came for the Communists and I did not speak out--because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out--because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out--because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out--because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak out for me. You have a special duty to speak out. He is looking for affirmation by sharing his thoughts with another male nurse. Silence gives him the affirmation he needs to continue this behaviour. Tell him how uncomfortable it makes you feel even though his comments are not directed at you. If he won't stop, invite him to only tell you such things if he does not mind you repeating his words to your manager and perhaps even sharing his words with his other colleagues. He won't want to have to wear the things that he is saying and in the long term he will probably benefit by the guidance. Make sure you give him fair warning and then follow through.
