  1. I have not heard back from beth israel regarding being readmitted for the fall 2009 semester. Honestly, while I would be thrilled if they accepted me as a readmit I do not know how I would handle it financially.
  2. While I do not have her personal email address. If you go to their website and click on contact us there is a spot to send an email. From my experience, Ms. Gallo is the one answering these emails and has always gotten back to me with 1 or 2 days. Good luck!
  3. Congratulations! I was going to apply to Farmingdale but I missed the deadline which was much earlier than NCC's.
  4. Does anybody know if they stopped doing weight loss surgeries at the hospital? My surgeon left a couple of years ago and is now at Beth Israel. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall.
  5. OMG - I am not a nurse but have had surgery there and spent alot of time there in early 2002. If this rumor is true, I am so sorry for anybody who is currently working there. I find it so hard to believe that such a big hospital can just shut down. Tracy
  6. 1. I was originally admitted for the Fall 2007 semester but I withdrew because I felt that it may not be for me (and I was starting to doubt my abilities because I was listening to certain family members who felt that I could not be a nurse) but now I realize that I am very excited to become a nurse and I will not let others undermine my determination. 2. I was not aware of this date. They do not start to make decisions until early May for the Fall semester. 3. I may apply to Nassau Community College on LI. 4. When I was accepted I did not have micro, nutrition or pharmacology. If you do not have A&P II I think that you can only go with the traditional program which is M-F during the day. I was accepted into the ATOP program which is Thursday (late afternoon) and Friday and Saturday during the day. 5. No, I will not be applying to the evening program. In order to get accepted into the Evening program you need to have finished all of your pre-requisites. Hope this helps - good luck Tracy
  7. Hi! Yes, the program I want to get in is 3 days a week. Not too bad. It is about a hour on the LIRR.
  8. I just mailed my letter requesting readmission into the Philip Beth Israel School of Nursing for the fall 2009 semester. Tracy
  9. YOU did not fail this patient, her DAUGHTER/CHILD did. My father passed away in June from cancer and had a DNR. He was in so much pain at the end and it would have been inhumane to fight the DNR. Her child was SELFISH. While you feel you failed this patient, you were only doing your job. God Bless and good luck
  10. Tracey, please give us an update on this thread since it is over a year old. If you haven't gotten into a RN program, I would advice a LPN program so more doors can open for you! In 2007 I was accepted into the Philips Beth Israel School of Nursing. Since I have never had any experience with patient care and I started to freak out and get very nervous and I ended up dropping out. I have regretted my decision ever since. Earlier this year I started to finish up my bachelor's in Sociology. In April of this year my father was diagnosed with lung cancer with mets to the bone. He passed away in June. I still think about nursing. He only spent one night in hospice but I think that I may re-visit nursing after I graduate. If I do, I believe that hospice nursing is the route that I will go. Good luck to all!!!
  11. I would prefer to work at an inpatient facility rather than in-house hospice. My father was in an inpatient facility and everyone was wonderful.
  12. My father was diagnosed in April with lung CA with mets to the bone. By the end of May he started to complain of the pain (I think that the pain was present for quite some time but never complained (which was very rare for him)). He went into the hospital on May 24 and he passed on June 17. The day before he passed he was brought into hospice and was on a steady dosage of morphine. He was totally out of it (glassy stare) but that first night he woke up and spoke to my sister. He told her that he loved her and asked for something to drink. He told me a couple of days before this that he loved me. He always had a love/hate relationship with my mother. I think that deep down he blamed my mother for his financial problems (she may have been a component but he was an equal partner). During this time my mother was very attentive but at times she took the bulk of his aggressive behavior. I do not think that during this time he ever told my mother that he loved her. I do believe that he loved her but I think that he believed that she put him in the hospital/rehab and he did not want to be there. By the next day the glassy stare was back and his breathing was better during the day. When I went back that night his breathing was very labored. My sister left the room to talk to her son. My mother and I were talking when she jumped up and said he stopped breathing. By the time I looked up he was breathing again. When it happened again I went and got the nurse who said that it was normal since he was at the end. My mother and I were holding his hands when it happened again. At this point my mother went to get my sister. Every time his breathing stopped we held out breathe. After a couple of minutes I went to see my nephew (less than 10 minutes). When I went back he had passed. It was very peaceful - the nurse gave us time to spend with him after he passed. We were so glad that we were there since our biggest fear was getting the call at night. It happened so fast - less than 2 months after diagnosis and 3 weeks after he started to go downhill.
  13. I started NS last year but dropped out because I was not sure it was for me. Immediately after dropping out I realized that I may have jumped the gun. I always planned on going back after I finished up by bachelor's in sociology. Recently, my father passed away and he was in hospice. I am thinking that hospice nursing is for me. Do employers hire hospice nurses right out of NS? If not, what type of experience is needed? As a side note - the nurses at the hospice were FABULOUS!!!!! I aspire to be them when I graduate from NS. Thanks
  14. Hello I was in nursing school last year and dropped out because I wasn't sure if this is what I really want to do. Immediately after dropping out I realized that I may have made a mistake - I should have stuck it out and worked through my nerves. Since then I have been trying to finish my bachelors degree (non-nursing) and taking some nursing pre-reqs. My father is dying from stage 4 lung cancer with mets to the bone. I do not think that he will make it through the summer. My sister who normally has a weak stomach has done things for my father that she thought that she would never do. I on the other hand am keeping my distance. I can do little things for him but I hate to see him in this state. My main question is - those of you who are nurses - are you able to work competently as a nurse but cannot care for family members or loved ones due to emotional ties. I really want to pursue nursing again but I am nervous that my experiences with my father means I am not meant to be a nurse.
  15. Thanks for the info - once we get my father settled with a routine for his chemo and radiation I will look into that.
  16. Does anybody know what the hourly wage is for a Unit Clerk in NYC. I normally would not care but I would have to pay the LIRR since I live on Long Island. I have searched on LI but most of the jobs are located in NYC (at least what I am looking for PT Weekends). Thanks
  17. My NLN was 79%. I was called during the second round of interviews in late May. Good Luck
  18. I am getting ready to apply for readmission to a nursing program. I am finishing up the last of my pre-reqs and I am taking a cna course over the summer to get some experience. Good luck to everyone
  19. Actually the LIRR train ( Mineola) is right next door and you can walk from the train to the hospital. Buses do not run as regularly on LI as they do in the city.
  20. When I was applying last year I always sent my emails to Ms. Stern. She was very good about getting back to me promptly. Good Luck
  21. Hi! I am planning on registering for the August 2 class. It is a Saturday and Sunday for 7 weeks. Good luck! Tracy
  22. Hello Has anybody gone to the Manhattan Institute for CNA training? If so, how was it? Thanks
  23. I was accepted last year. I withdrew during the first semester because I felt I wasn't ready. I was in the ATOP program. I think we had between 50 and 60 students. Good luck!
  24. Hi! Has anybody gone to school to become a CNA? Last year I was accepted into a nursing school and I dropped out after a month. I was a uncomfortable with the patient contact. I am normally shy so I was not shocked about this. I really want to become a nurse so after I finish up my BA I am planning to reapply to nursing schools. I want to get my certification for a nursing assistant so I can gain some experience working with patients. My question is - do you actually go into healthcare settings or do you practice on yourselves? Thank you
