Congrats Leigh & charlestonsailing! Are you guys going to the Nov. 13th meeting? I am down in CT and I don't think I'll be able to attend, but I'm wondering if this is something I really need to go to! Sheepwithagun - did you go to that first orientation? How big of a deal is it if I can't go? Any advice?

to update....I GOT IN!!! I only applied to 1 school - and I was accepted :) Soo excited and thankful. I will be starting the program January 2010 at the Medical University of South Carolina and I can't wait!

You can always email the admissions dept. As far as I was told, this is how they break it down (although, it may change): 50% GPA (20% cummulative, 30% prereqs) 35% Essay 10% Recommendations 5% Resume

nics - My GPA wasn't so good - my undergrad really brought me down and i was so worried. It was only a 2.89, and then my prereqs weren't the best either, 3.3. BUT, I didn't give up and I did my best under the circumstances. I think it's really important to be sure to answer the essay question and be direct about it. 100 words - each word counts. I don't know what helped me to get in, but I am so thankful. I also had 2 of my professors write reccomendations and I think that helped, but I really don't know what they put down on the reference forms. I think what helped me was that I have had volunteer experience in the ER and I have worked previously in a psych hospital. THanks for the congrats charlestonsailing! and those of you who are on the alternate list - I have high hopes that you will get in - many people apply to several schools so they may not necessarily accept. I hope to see some of you in the Spring :)

Listen, Don't get down on yourself. Be glad it was just your essay and not your GPA. The essay is the easiest to improve (and you don't have to spend more money on re-taking classes). I had spent about a month working on my essay. 100 words is not easy to express yourself. I think that I had a hard time in the beginning because I wanted to say so much. I read and re-read the question constantly because at the end of the day, even if you want to include personal stuff in the essay, you MUST answer the question directly. I think it's great that they said everything else was fine! You can improve your essay - I know you can. Ask for help from a professor, friend, etc. A simple switch of a word can make a big difference. If you need help, I am here too!

Wow. I was just checking my email and I received an email stating I was accepted!!!! I am so thankful and so excited! This is the best news I've ever had, hands down. Keep you heads up guys - I will be thinking positive thoughts for all of you!!!!

So, just wondering: Does anyone have any idea how the admissions process works? I'm waiting to hear from my school and I keep going over in my head the pros and cons of my application. Just curious how they make their decisions out of hundreds of applicants - we all take the same prereqs, but we took them at different schools. One "A" may be equivalent to a "C" at another or vice versa....obviously my GPA is my main concern, so just trying to keep my head up while I wait and wait and wait :) Seems like I get a mini panic attack every day when I turn onto my road coming home from work wondering what's in the mail! Always hoping for some good news :) Anyone hear from their school yet? Thinking positive for EVERYONE who has applied, we all know the efforts it has taken to get this far :)

I am also waiting to hear if I get in. SO nervous! Keep going from being confident - to thinking I am crazy to even apply. This is the only program I applied to...and the only one I want to go to! I wish there was a way to tell them that if I am accepted, I'm definitely going and won't waste a space! Have you guys finished your prereqs or did you apply with classes left to still take? i wonder if that makes a difference at all. And what did you all think about the 100 word essay? I have a BA, but I don't know if that helps since my undergrad GPA was terrible. My cummulative GPA is my main concern. We shall see. Best of luck to everyone!

You're right, they are very helpful at the College of Nursing. I definitely had my share of questions for them. I'm curious what your essay question was for the Fall 09 application? and was there a word limit?

I kept looking at the essay and was thinking maybe they meant 1,000 words? :) It was very difficult to get it right, but in the end, I am happy with the essay. It's the GPA that worries me since that is worth 50% of the admissions. I've moving to Charleston in January regardless of what happens though, and I've very excited!! Best of luck to all!

I have some family down there and my best friends from college moved down 5 yrs ago - the program is exactly what i am looking for and it's right in Charleston. The passing rate for graduates of this program is very high and i want to stay down there when i'm finished. Many other reasons, but these are the ones that really stand out. I am applying for Spring 2010, so I will be submitting my application within the next week or so. Regardless, i will be moving down in January. I just registered to take the ACT in June, I will be applying for nursing school over the summer. My school requires my SAT score or ACT score...I think I got around 1000 on my SAT's ten years ago, so I'm taking this to get a better score. I am very nervous. I think i will do well, since my mind is more focused compared to in high school, but we'll see. I am going to just take practice exams and study the format of the test, I think that will help a lot. You can take it again!! and again if you want!

Hey all, I've been browsing a lot of threads but can't really find any answers I'm looking for and I'm hoping that I am not the only one with these questions...I plan on applying to MUSC for Spring '10 and I am curious about those of you who recently were accepted: what was your GPA? - do they combine previous college degree GPA's with most current or just take most current? SAT/ACT score? In-state/out-of-state? work experience/volunteer experience? How much experience? Race/Ethnicity (just wondering how diverse the program is - you don't have to answer if you don't want to!!) I know it's a competitive school, I keep going back and forth about my chances of getting in, but trying to stay positive!!! Thanks in advance!

I hear ya! I am working full time, volunteering on my only day off at the hospital and taking classes (one at a time now, since they are the really hard science classes!)...I really, really do not like my job now, but it's helping me out a great deal financially. I see it as a sacrifice i have to make in order to get the the end of road. By the time I am ready for the nursing program (accel) I will have money saved up so I don't have to work, my car will be paid off (hopefully) and I just recently got out of cc debt (whoohoo!)...so yes, it is miserable b/c I can't stand my job now, BUT if I stay for a little longer and do the pre-nursing stuff on the side, I will be in a better position for the program, financially - which is my biggest concern. Actually...getting into the program is more of a concern, but I will keep my head up! You can do it too...and i think that's great you can work to become a CNA over the summer, yes it's a pay cut, but it's also great experience for school! Best of luck to you!

I am only applying to MUSC, I heard it was very competitive and I am so nervous. My grades are ok, but hopefully they will see more through my LOR and essay. I can't remember ever feeling this nervous about anything, its scary, but I really want to go to this school! I wish everyone the best of luck!

My advice: Don't give up! First of all, Jan 15 to Jan 17 is only 2 days....take the test again. In the meantime, is there someone at the school you can talk to about this - counselor, advisor? It seems like you have everything else in place..think of this as a minor setback - but don't give up. I would still apply!

School: Medical university of south carolina - accelerated BSN program requirements: SAT/ACT, 3 letters of reference, personal essay, field experience, CPR certification, and the usual science prereqs - I have my bachelor's already, so i just basically have to take the sciences - and l plan to CLEP out of the Human Growth & Dev. class current GPA: 3.76 - from my previous college I had a 2.89 - i'm not sure how they will determine my overall GPA... Entrance Exams: unfortunately, yes: 1000 or higher SAT or 22 or higher ACT - I took my SAT over 10 yrs. ago, just barely breaking 1000 - I might take the ACT and see how I do. Plan A: Get into the MUSC program Plan B: Get into the MUSC program Plan C: Get into the MUSC program If I keep trying, I will eventually get in :) I will work hard and if that doesn't work, I will work harder. I want this, and I can make this happen. Think Positive :)

A&P I: B I was so bummed, the pressure to get an A in this class for nursing school got the best of me. I hope to get an A for A&P II - same professor, same type of tests, etc....hopefully it will help me! I'm a terrible test taker when it comes to T/F - which is 50% of the exams! but...I did get an A in chem last year! whoohoo! and congrats to everyone else for getting such good grades! The hard work eventually pays off :)

thanks for you reply athenas...I was thinking about taking the SAT again, but I have to do more research on that part...time and money! and congrats on your graduation last year, you must be so happy!
