  1. Thanks Annebelle....I got your personal message.
  2. i'm in my maternal-child semester and already having problems with the math!! would someone please explain these math problems that contain "pediatric dose parameters" if you would please, step by step, break this down for me. i use dimentional analysis but can't for the life of me .....even get started much less understand these problems. thanks so much for taking the time to help me. 1. a child has seizures. order: phenytoin 124 mg, po, q.d child's height and weight: 36 in, 45 lb. bsa is 0.74 m² pediatric dose parameter: 350 mg/m²/d drugs avalilabe: dilantin 30 mg/5 ml and 100 mg/5 ml a. what is the child's body surface area (bsa) in meters squared? b. what is the dose parameter according to the child's bsa? c. is the dose within safe parameters? d. how many milliliters would you give the child per day? or would you give? 2. a child has pain. order: codeine gr 1.4, po, q4-6h, prn child's height and weight: 42 in., 50 lb or 0.84 m² pediatric dose parameter: 100 mg/m²/d drug available: codeine 15 mg tablets a. what is the child's body surface area? b. what is the dose parameter according to the child's bsa? (convert grains to milligrams) c. is the dose within safe dose parameters? explain d. how many tablet(s) would you give the child per dose?

  4. Has anyone taken either A or B ATI Fundamentals proctored exam in the last few months? If so, please let me know and I'll write you back; I have a few questions regarding the test. Thanks!!
  5. Thanks for everyone's responses. I hate trick questions!!
  6. obtaining blood specimens via a pipette is an acceptable practice. the answer was false. i missed it...why?
  7. purchase a Littman stethoscope.. Are you planning to purchase the stethoscope from Wallace or elsewhere?
  8. OK, I will. Can you use DA for all calculations? Is it preferred over formula, ratio/proportion? I only want to learn one method and not get confused. Thanks!
  9. Is the "available" factor always first vs. "what's ordered"? I'm trying to teach myself DA before January.
  10. Please help....I cannot figure out how to do this one. The answer is 3 cc. Need DA method. Thanks!! A Nitroglycerin drip is ordered for your patient to control his chest pain. The concdentration is 100 mg in 250 cc D5W. Order is to begin the infusion at 20 mcg/min. What is the rate you would begin the infusion on the infusion pump?
  11. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your help!
  12. Anything will work. Got to figure this one out. Thanks
  13. For the life of me, I can't figure this out (dimensional analysis). Anyone out there with a clear head...I must be very tired!! Thanks. A Dopamine drip (400mg in 250 cc of IV fluid) is infusing on your 80 kg patient at 20 cc/hour. How many mcg/kg/min are infusing for this patient?

  15. Congrats to all! If anyone wants to meet before November 16th, let me know. We could meet for coffee somewhere convenient or PM me at https://allnurses.com/members/322350/ Billy
  16. Every nurse should read this and take action! http://www.foreignlaborcert.doleta.gov/h-1c.cfm
  17. I think it will be worse. Probably lots of foreign nurses flooding the market happy to accept $10 hr. as RN.
  18. I live closer to Jeff State, but hear Wallace is a much better school. Any comments? Anyone attended both to have comparison?
  19. Just a technique that helped when I first got started......if you have access and your employer doesn't mind, use drip tubing, foam tape and betadine/water in a syringe.......tape the drip tube to a mayo stand covering tubing with foam tape.......gives a great "vein" have someone else put betadine/water in tubing and start an IV in the tube.......gives you a feel for veins and flashes like blood in the IV needle chamber........sounds silly but works until you get a feel for the equipment!!!!!!! Hope this helps I'm in pre-nursing and would like practice before NS next semester. Can you simplify the tubing example and where I could purchase the items? Thanks.
  20. They removed the separate health assessment course from my program, so that shows you how important some think it is. Programs that don't have separate courses for subjects like assessment and pharmacology say the material is "integrated" into other classes during the program. How well this material is covered can range from good to almost nonexistent. So you don't think taking Fundamentals 1-2 semesters later (after a health assessment class) would be a problem? Thanks!
  21. Wallace has a great P/T program. You have up to 4 years to complete, can attend day or night. Most lectures are available online. Fall 2009 : NUR 103 Health Assessment with NUR 104 Pharmacology Spring 2010: NUR 102 Fundamentals Summer: No classes available p/t Fall: NUR 105 Adult Spring 2011 NUR Maternal & Child etc. Hope this helps.
  22. Hello, I am considering a P/T RN program this fall. First semester would be Pharmacology (math included) with Health Assessment. The following semester (spring) would be Nursing Fundementals only (with clinicals.) If I'm admitted into the program Spring 2010 (assessment and pharmacology) I wouldn't be able to take the Fundementals until Fall 2010 (skipping summer totally) Question: How important is Assessment along with Fundementals? Is it mandantory to have the assessment education the same time as clinicals? Any feedback is appreciated.
  23. Where are you attending NS? Is there alot of math in second semester? Good luck!
  24. I would just like to comment here . . .I was accepted to Jeff State last Fall. Had A's & B's in all nursing classes. However, the 'dosage calculation' test, you are only allowed to miss two problems. I missed three and was immediately kicked out of the program and forced to withdraw from all classes. ALOT of money and time wasted. I will be going to Lawson State this Fall! Alert and Oriented: Would you please contact me at my allnurses link? I have some questions you possible could answer. https://allnurses.com/members/324569/ Thanks.
  25. I am definately going the LPN-RN route for the following reasons: 1) 3 semesters vs. 5 2) "work experience" as nurse upon graduating from RN program 3) excellent clinical experience and skills 4) self confidence in NS Just my opinion. Good luck to all.
