wanna b, Thank you for the words of encouragement. I'm starting 130 next month and I am a little anxious, but ready to start. I have been watching skills videos and reviewing nursing math to prepare. I wish you lots of luck in 131 and you remaining classes. Happy New Year!

Nursing Assistant Question
It may be difficult to find a job in a hospital since they require you to have 6+months of experience for a CNA. Most likely, you can quickly find a job in nursing home or some type of long-term care facility. Patient care tech will give you a wider skill set. I think you learn phlebotomy and EKG which would be a big plus for the hospital setting. Either one would be give you an advantage should you decide to further your career in nursing. Best of luck in your decision and job search. It is really tough out there.

Nursing Assistant Question
You may be better off checking with the unemployment office because they have to approve the program. Not sure what part of NJ you are in, but try Ace Healthcare Training Institute. They have a location in Dover and Union. I'm sure they are on the LWD's list of approved programs. But check with unemployment anyway, they can give you better information to suit your situation.

Coffee&milk, Hope all is well. Here is a link for the American Heart Association: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3012360 Search and see what's in your area. The cost depends on where you go for certification. I paid $89 for a class in Fairfield last year, but I was able to write if off on my taxes. Check around for the costs.

Question re: chemistry prereq at UCC
I took CHE 105 without having high school chemistry or any chemistry knowledge in my background and got a B+ in the class. CHE 005 would help to prepare you for the chemistry for health sciences. But, in my opinion, CHE 005 was not necessary. If you are ok with math, then you should be fine. Just do what you feel comfortable with.

No Waiting List And No Entrance Exam RN
Union County College/Trinitas does not have a entrance exams. As far as the wait list, once you finish the prerequisites, you have to be invited to the first nursing class. Its kind of like a wait list, but I don't think its as bad or as long of a wait as some other schools.

CNA Certification at Essex County College??
There are some nursing homes that offer certification/training, but I am not sure which ones they are. Check with your state's department of health or board of nursing. Or check with some of the nursing homes in your area.

Calculator for General Chemistry
Yes, you will need a scientific calculator for gen. chemistry. I also remember using it for calculating ph conversions. Its a good investment for your other classes where math is involved. I have a Texas Instuments TI-83 that I got over 10 years ago. You don't have to get the most expensive one. Just make sure it does scientific notation, logarithms and exponents.

CNA Certification at Essex County College??
I did the CNA program at Healthcare Training Institue and we did clinicals at Regency Grande in Dover. I was in the process of moving to North Carolina to be closer to family and go to nursing school there, but the ecomony is not working out in my favor. As far as my clinical experience, we were paired up with a CNA and completed the skills on our assignment sheets. Some of the skills we did were feeding, bed baths, showers, using the hoyer lift, toileting. I'm just giving you a summary. After that, we helped out where needed until it was time to go home. That being said, it was a really great experience. When do you start your clinicals?

CNA Certification at Essex County College??
Did you mean South Mountain Rehabilitation on Springfield Avenue? The 70 stops very close to there or you can take the 25 but you will have to walk a bit from the bus stop. Also check the trip planner on njtransit.com to see what the closest stops are.

Union County College Nurses
It may even depend on where you go for your BSN. Research which schools you would like to attend and see what they require. Even if you just take Chem 105 for the sake of getting the ADN and go for the BSN later, you can take the required chemistry classes at that time. I think they recommend you take the chem combo so you won't have to take it later or if you go for the BSN right after finishing at UCC because of the articulation agreements they have with other schools. Just do what works best for you.

Union County College Nurses
They recommend you to take the Chem 113/114 combo if you plan on going for the BSN. I took Chem 105 class. This was the first chemisry class I ever took. The most difficult part was with the conversion factors and the math stuff. Math and I are not the best of friends if you know what I mean. Despite all that, I got a B+ which shocked me, but I was so glad to get that grade. If you are registering now, I took the lab and lecture with Prof. Pauwels (I guess it's spelled like that). He's easy going and explains the material well. Also, he was kind enough to hold a "study session" before the final exam. Whichever one you take, take it before A&P I. You will need the chemistry for at the beginning and you will have it out of your way.

CNA Skill Test in NJ
It takes about 2 weeks or 10 business days. It will say you passed the skills portion and can take the written portion. As soon as you get it, call up to schedule your test. I took the skills test on around October 10, had the results by October 23rd, and took the test about a week later. Here is a copy of a practice exam (if you don't already have one) Good Luck! http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/069912.pdf

APAG1020, You have to apply as a nursing major and be listed as a nursing major. The code for Trinitas (NURE I think) has to be listed in your file. I hope this answers your question.

Career Changer...Again
I'm kind of in a similar situation. I graduated with as Associates degree in health information management (medical records) and ended up working part time on a hospital nursing unit as a unit clerk. I did this while I was getting my bachelors degree in finance. I'm still kicking myself for not pursing the RN at that time. I finished the bachelor's degree in working in accounting for 8 years. I even tried to get my master's degree in accounting, but it didn't work out. Unfortunately, my mother became ill and I was her primary caregiver until she passed away. That's when it really hit me that I could not stand working in accounting. So now, I will be starting a job as a CNA where my mother was a patient after she broke her hip. I'll try to stick it out until the end of the year and find a job in a hospital. I don't want to work in LTC, but you have to crawl before you walk. Also, I am finishing pre-reqs and hopefully will start nursing classes in Spring 2010. You aren't the only one out there. Sometimes it may take time to find the path that's right for you. You have to do what's is right for you when the time is right. As far as finding a job, a friend told me that it is better to apply in person. It may be difficult to use your past healthcare experience because it was not within the past year or two. (I't just giving you the real) It took me a really long time to find the position I have now because I don't have the current experience. Stress the fact the you are in nursing school. Keep at it, you will find the perfect situtation real soon. I apologize for being long winded.

Where to get CPR training - Is Red Cross online and skills session acceptable?
Congrats on your acceptance into nursing school. I didn't quite understand, do you need a full CPR certification course? I found a CPR course through the American Heart Association (americanheart.org). Under the training courses section, you can do a search in your area. I think you need the BLS for Healthcare Providers course; this is the one required for my nursing school. Not sure if it is universal with all nursing schools. Double check with your nursing school to make sure this is the course you need. The class is about 7 to 8 hours and you get certified for Basic CPR/Life support and AED (defibrilator).

Union County College/Trinitas School of Nursing-- Entrance Exam?
I'm in the Pre-Nursing program at Union County College. I was hoping to get an invited to register for NURE 130 next year, but from what I have been reading on some other posts, that hope is shot to h---. Anyway, I have been trying to find out if they require an entrance exam. I've been searching on the UCC website and anywhere else I can to find anything referring to an exam. All can find is information about their ranking point system. I know Muhlenberg requires an entrance exam (are they still open?). Does Trinitas require any entrance exams?

When should I take Chemistry?
It depends on what you are comfortable with. I recommend taking Chemistry first to get it over with. But I wouldn't recommend taking it with A&P. That sounds like a little too much of a headache which my lead to heartache and stomachache and any other body ache you can think of. That's what I am doing now. I planned on taking chemistry and A&P I, but an academic advisor talked me out of it and I am really greatful that he did. Chemistry has a lot of math, which is my weak spot. The 2 A&Ps are more my speed; I'm fluent in medical terminology. This is just my opinion, do what you are comfortable with.

New CNA, looking for job hunting tips, need experience
It seems to be like this everywhere. I went on a job interview today for a CNA position. But they were only looking for people with experience. When I was called to come in for the interview, she was fully aware that I had not worked as a CNA since becoming certifed in November 2008. I said to the interview, " In order to get a job you have to have experience, but you can't get the experience without getting a job". I was so mad when I left the interview. I could her hear on get on the phone and tell whoever she was talking to that she can't use this one (I guess that means me) because I don't have the experience. I had to stop at Burger King and get me a whopper to help me feel better. It was a wasted of time getting this CNA. I should have kept working in accounting while I work on the pre-reqs for nursing school. Too late now, I been out of work for almost a year, so I can't get hired any way.
