Why I'm leaving nursing
Here's is an idea. Nursing is one of the largest, highly trained and educated workforce's the United States. Pilots would not operate a flight short of crew. Why should a nurse operate a shift short? As a union nurse I have a contract that dictates how management can interact with me, schedule, etc. I can object to unsafe assignments and file grievances against them for this. Why is everyone throwing their hands up and leaving? Where is the fight? This is our profession! National Nurses United has over 180,000 members. As nurses we could be the largest organized workforce in the US and dictate how we expect wards to be run. Time to stop being so passive fellow nurses. Organize, fight, solidarity! This being said it is still an uphill battle to staff even with a union but at least there is a paper trail of misdeeds. Very handy when things go wrong and everyone blames the nurse. -IfNotNowWhen

Have you worked at the VA while in NP school?
Hello all, I am an emergency room nurse currently about to start an FNP-DNP program in Chicago. I currently work for the Veteran's Administration and am wondering what VA programs others have used while in NP school. For some background. I will be using Post-911 GI bill benefits to pay for grad school. I do not require funding from my hospital. The catch is others who receive funding through the VA for school (VANEEP etc) get preferential schedules, and have to sign contracts to work for the VA for X amount of years after graduation. I just wish there was a way for me to sign a contract. That way the VA lets me have the full time pay while attending school and then retains me afterwards. Seems like a win-win considering they won't have to pay for the education. Just wondering if anyone out there has a similar situation. Have you made any arrangement with the VA outside of their traditional scholarship programs? Especially if you are willing to continue working there and do not require their funds or school? Thank you for the input

-----------Thanks Muno that is a great suggestion. It would definitely be a no-brainer if this came up in the EMAR, but I guess half the battle is getting these things charted and stickered at the source.

Tips for getting SCIP measures completed on time. (Foleys)
Hello all, So I work on an ortho floor and was asked to come up with a few suggestions for getting SCIP measures completed on time. This is a brand new floor and the Docs are mad, insurance is threatening to withhold reimbursement ect.. I was asked to focus on the Foley protocol (out within 48 hours). Some fellow nurses and I suggested that a Foley sticker similar to a IV tag with date and time be attached in the O.R. This would be a great visual que for the other nurses, much like changing out the IV tubing. Maybe the other nurses are missing things because the SCIP measures are not in the computer care plan and are on the hard charts at the nursing station. Any other suggestions for foleys would be appreciated. It seems like such an easy task but for some reason there is a problem where I work. Thanks gang -IfNotNowWhen

Nursing student in need of help for L&D nursing elective
I don't know if you are located in a city/urban area, but if so, try a community health center. I understand labor and delivery in the hospital setting is probably what you want. There is a lot of pregnancy counseling and prenatal care occurring in these facilities. Many have programs teaching about child nutrition, labor, etc. Most provide health services to expecting mothers as well. Additionally, some good research topics may arise. Health disparities among expecting minority mothers and the lower economic classes. Just a thought.

What is a good resource for learning medical Spanish?
Hello allnurses team! I am currently located in a hospital with a large Spanish speaking population. I have been getting by on some of my rudimentary Spanish but need some more skills. Is there a book, CD, program that any of you could recommend? I have looked on Amazon (too few reviews). Rosetta Stone is very expensive and does not focus on medical terms. If anyone has had a great medical Spanish textbook, that would also work. I am looking for things like asking about patient history, medical terms, ROS etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Gracias todos! Ifnotnowwhen

RN or BSN??? That is the question.
I would definitely say BSN is the better route. More hospitals are starting to shy away from LPNs and are preferring to take in BSN educated nurses over the associate RN since it elevates their status. Also if yo ever wanted to go into a masters program or a management role you would need the BSN so might as well get it out of the way.

Military Veterans and Nursing. Eligibility
Hello, I am a nursing student and this is my first post. I believe I could receive a better answer here. I have a friend currently completing nursing pre-reqs at school with me. He really wants to be a nurse. He is a veteran and spent a considerable amount of time in Iraq. I know he has some anxiety problems for which he receives VA compensation. He is worried that the Anxiety problem incurred from his service will disqualify him from being a nurse. Especially since he is receiving VA compensation. I know nurses have to be mentally fit and this man is, but he just has some anxiety issues to work through. I would really like to give him some hope since he is thinking about leaving the curriculum. He would just make too good a nurse. Any Help with this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Cheers!:wink2:
