MANAGERS: do you have a permanent charge nurse or assistant nurse manager?
Where do you get your information to base when and how a person is ready for the charge nurse position? I am currently writing a paper on such. I was out of nursing school X 2 months and placed in a charge nurse position. I felt that I was no way ready for such a position let alone the responsibility but my nurse manager felt differently. I have been a nurse for 1 1/2 years now. I felt that there should have been training for the position. So now that I am back in school, I want to research this. Can you provide me with info and/or websites?

Charge Nurse responsibilities?
As I said before, I was put in charge 2 months out of nursing school. What a blow!!! I have been a nurse now for 1 1/2 years and I still don't like it. A friend of mine said her hospital sends you to a class on charge nursing and you have to be employed 2+ years before you take on the position. I am currently in a BS program and I want to write my first paper on whether charge nurses are adequately trained. Any websites/journals would be greatly appreciated.

Charge Nurse responsibilities?
I work at a small hospital and was "appointed" charge nurse 2 months after graduation and only get 50 cents more on the hour. I personally feel you should be properly trained before you take on this responsibility. I have been a nurse now for 1 1/2 years and love working the floor. I would take it any day over charge nursing. Charge nurses on our floor have to take patients even though there are so many other responsibilities. We are a small community hospital and staffing is not the greatest. Anyone heard of the staffing matrix? What a joke!!!!!!!!!!

How does one become charge?
To the MPCCRN.....I haven't been an RN for 30 years so it is a big deal! Try to think back when you were fresh out of school....were you prepared to be a charge nurse? Maybe you, but not me.....being a new RN doesn't make you a charge nurse.

How does one become charge?
unfortunately i was not that lucky. i was a new grad, just out 1 month and put on charge duty. i work at a small community hospital where we only have 1 maybe 2 other rn's on shift with an aide and 1 lpn. i was totally overwhelmed but was told to "suck it up". i have been a nurse for 1 year now and am still doing charge. i just pray every morning before i head out the door that i don't totally screw up and do the best job i can. i think all "charge" nurses should have adequate training prior to taking on such a high pressure job but my nurse manager thinks otherwise. one person i believe said "prioritize" and thats ultimately what i had to do. good luck!!

Post Transfusion Labs
We usually get an H&H 2 hours post transfusion unless the MD orders differently. My real question is about the Lasix post transfusion. Does the line have to be free of blood to push the Lasix? How long do you wait before pushing the Lasix? Thanks.

Post Transfusion Labs
New RN here. This is probably a dumb question but I can't get a straight answer from several of my "senior" RN's. We frequently get an order to follow the 1st unit of blood with 20 of Lasix IV. How long after the unit finishes should the lasix be given? Should the line be free of blood before I push the Lasix? Can I hook it to the pump? Do I flush the line with saline before and after the lasix? Thanks..

Flowsheet for Continuous Bladder Irrigation
Hello, I am too looking for a good CBI worksheet with clear directions. I have a mad night last shift with pt. getting blood along with CBI and having 6 other patients to boot. Our sheet has 4 columns, one for volume up, volume in, foley contents and amt of urine output. It is very confusing when you hang a new bag in keeping up with what is actual urine ouput. Also, I did find out that if you have to irrigate, that using the straight lumen on the 3way will facilitate breaking a clot, I tried using the curved one and had no luck. Any input (no pun intended) would be greatly appreciated.
