  1. i meant people who leave with the IV lock in and we usually know that they are drug abusers. some will sneak out after it has been put it and some just want to have a straight access. these are people who know it is there and leave anyway.
  2. What are you doing about patients who leave with their IV lock in place? This is becoming a problem for us and I would like to know what you do. I will ask them to let me take it out, but i will not chase anyone down or threaten them. My hospital is not sure what to do and I feel it they want to go that bad, let them. Has anyone had any legal issues with this? Ever had anyone come back in with an infection because of it?? Any ideas or expierences to share? Thanks Ellen
  3. at our hospital we are paid on years of service, not on degree status. if we chose to take the CEN CCRN, etc. they will re-imburse us for the fee of the test. we don't receive any extra for bls, acls, tncc, enpc or other certifications. our contract does allow for $75 per nurse a year for continuing education.
  4. we are seeing an increase in violence in our ed. we are a 450 bed tertiary medical center in maine where this has not been a problem. the administration says that they care, but nothing seems to be getting done. we have had some injuries, 2 requiring surgery. what protocols do you have in place? are there ways to file complaints to have them heard? we have a union, but few are reluctant to file a grievance with them. i want to know how to broach this to make a statement and make the administration know that this will not be tolerated. thanks ellen

ahhh, inapsine. one of the drugs that had to have been invented by an nurse. too bad it was taken off. i have never seen any problems with it and but as with anything else, it was tooooooo good to be true!!
  6. it has been suggested that we will begin to tape trauma's as they come in. what is the legality with this?? are such tapes able to be supoened?? what if the person is unable to give consent to have this done???? we are concerned about what is said and many of us do not want to be taped. has anyone run into this problem??? what do you do elsewhere?? we are the tertiary trauma center for the eastern and northern part of the state, with a lot of transfers in. any help would be appreciated. we are concerned about legality and what one person (lawyer) can percieve as taking too long or is too crass. help!! ellen

:chuckle i recently took the CEN and passed. i thought it was just a test of thinking things through and going with gut feelings. i have been a nurse since the invention of sliced bread (almost, feels like it!!) and just take a deep breath. the mosby was the most helpful review. GOOD LUCK!!!
  8. we are having an increase in patients who are wanting to leave with IV locks in place. what is the nurses responsiblity? if they use it for illegal use or develop a raging infection, are we responsible? we have had some very belligerent patients that have done so, and we would like to know where we stand. most all of the patients are known or suspected to be IV drug users and we would like to know how this is handled in other places. we are a small state that is seeing an increase in drug use. thanks ellen in maine
  9. we are having a number of patients wanting to leave with their IV llocks in place. most are known drug users and they are leaving AMA. i would like to know what is my legal responsibility? can i let them go? am i responsible if they use it illegaly or come back in with a raging infection? most are so belligerent that we let them go and hope for the best. we are a smaller state that is seeing a lot more of this everyday. this is a growing concern to the nurses and would like to know how other places have handled this situation. thanks ellen in maine
