Wow, all of these stories sounds alot like what I am going through as well. I have always had trouble making up my mind, but even more so now that I am a brand new nurse. I just did a 20 week orientation to L&D, which wasn't right for me, then to postpartum. Having trouble making decisions was one of the reasons it didn't work out for me, nurses must be quick to make life changing decisions for their patients. I may never be the nurse I thought I wanted to be. I now think I may have made the wrong career choice, but I just can't give up totally! I just wish I could find my niche in nursing. I, like you, don't like hospitals and being around sick people. Although postpartum/labor & delivery wasn't really like helping sick people, I did my share of monitoring c section pt's and sick babies. I just don't think I am cut out for it. I am now unemployed and have bills to pay...and a single parent! I wish I could figure out what to do. Does anyone know what it takes to become a school nurse? I think that would suit me pretty good, not great deal of sick people or lifethreatening decision making! Any suggestions would be sooo much appreiated! Thnks all of you for sharing your stories, I now feel a little better about myself. I am a caring person and a hard worker,,,,there has got to be something out there for me!:smackingf

It sounds like I am not alone in my new job woes! I am a June graduate at the end of my second orientation at a large local hospital. The first orintation was for L&D, and unfortunately I not only had the preceptor from hell, but the whole unit turned out to be a bunch of back stabbing, clicky wenches! They chewed me up until it was apparent to everyone that I was not happy and going nowhere in this unit. My nurse mgr took me aside (with no warning) and told me that my preceptor said I was not progressing!!! She gave my mid term eval to the nurse mgr without letting me know a word of what was said. My nurse mgr told me I may be better off down in postpartum....so away I went. Next preceptor was better, but warned me immediately to watch my back and watch what I say. I didn't realize how true those words of warning were. I now fear for my job, I hate it and want to quit soooo badly! I can feel people staring at me and talking behind my back, that I wasn't good enough to stick out L&D and now my night preceptor is becoming snippy and spitful, nit picking every little thing I do. I want to look elsewhere for a job, this one was doomed from the get go. My nurse mgr is aware of all of the nasty backstabbing going on but tolerates it. She is just as bad as them...even the patients hear the stories! What to do? Please,advice from any and all is much appreciated!!!

Does anybody out there work in postpartum and can help with shift organization work sheets? I am a new grad RN stuggling with organization! I know that if I had a worksheet specifically for postpartum, I could be more efficient in organizing my day. Help?!! Much thanks!

Let me tell you that at this point, I am willing to try anything! I have a less than part time job right now, and I can't pay my bills. I don't want to have to resort to home health, but until the hospitals start hiring again, I have to do something. Good luck to you and thanks for the info!

Yes, I did. The problem is that none of them are going to hire until February. Because I missed the summer hiring season, it looks like I will have to wait until then. If you know something that I don't know, PLEASE tell me!!! I honestly have tried all but the smaller hospitals, however, I have heard from fellow x students that this is true of them as well. Thanks! I am in the same boat, broke, desperate for work. I have applied everywhere I know of, that means online and in person. I have gotten the "THANKS, WE'LL CALL YOU" routine but nobody calls back! I guess you are lucky in the sense that you are at least working! Well, chin up because around november the hospitals will begin to start the winter hiring process.....if you can wait that long! Whats the pay like for home health? Shegal:yawn:

Well, I haven't run into that idea yet. I am now, however, getting tons of feedback on multiple places I have applied to online. So, don't give up hope while still a student! I will give you this advice though: start applying now, you want to generate interest in you and your resume right away. This way, you won't be a new face to them. And after you graduate, start calling these institutions right away to let them know you have graduated. Also, take the NCLEX as soon as you can...waiting may put you in the same position I am in right now. I missed the bus on the summer hiring cycle because I took the NCLEX late in summer. Good for you! Sometimes, opportunities come at the most unforseen times! No paper resumes? Why on earth would anyone want to hire someone without the benefit of human contact...don't you want to know who you are talking to? Don't you want to look them in the eye when you are talking to them? Well, I believe most recruiters like the old fashioned face to face. I just think that society is trying to be too efficient, and not in a good, productive way. I finally decided to get off the computer and start networking in person! It works..so get yourself out there everyone! Oh ya, I agree with you on the Specialty Org's...more like secret societys!

:up:Congratulations!!! That is great news, I too went on my first interview and I am very confident that I got the job. The nurse recruiter was very nice and I felt very comfortable and confident with my responses to her questions. She will be calling me to tell me where they can fit me in....looks like Tele or L & D. Well, allnurses.com comes to the rescue once again! This answers all of my questions about my first nursing interview and what to expect. Now, I can prepare my responses and feel confident about the interview. The only question I have now is ....what to wear? I am only going to fill out an application tomorrow, so I don't think it will be considered an interview yet. Does this situation require full on dress suit, or more casual. Please, I need all of the dress code help that I can get! Thanks a billion, Shegal

Wow, sounds like a true dilema! I don't know where you are from, but if there is a big sign - on bonus...why not? Crime is everywherem and you may just find you will enjoy the change of scenery! Just get your foot in the door, stay for as long as you need to and then pursue your bigger and better dreams. I wish I could travel, but my 12 year old at home wouldn't like me very much if I left him for a job! Anyway, give it some serious thought. I am still sitting here jobless, with not a prospect to be had. I have been everywhere and don't know what to do. Travel nursing agency said they require 1 year min. for any type of position. I have a feeling this is going to be alot tougher than I ever imagined. Good luck to you! Shegal
