Hello I know this is an old post but I wanted to let you know that I have a similar story to yours. My nursing license is suspended right now for six months for losing my job while in my state's recovery program. I have been in recovery since June 15, 2007 due to un resolved issues I carried around for years and used pills to cope. I had my ASN when I first got into recovery and I graduated with my MSN Nurse Executive in October 2012, once I addressed my issues I was able to continue my education successful. I was suffering from depression and had zero coping skills when I got into recovery but I went in wanting to get myself together so I could continue to help others and it worked. I said all that to say that we have to get ourselves well to help others get well. I wish you all the luck and forgive yourself.

Hello I wanted to get some advice in reference to the type of non nursing jobs I can get with a MSN- nursing administrator degree. I was enrolled in the recovery program in my state and my license got suspended because I was fired from my job for being late twice. I have been in the recovery program for a few years and any adverse report counts as non compliance and thus my license are suspended, I am still working my recovery program and have not relapsed. I recently graduated with my MSN- nurse administrator in Oct 12 and the action was taken the other day so I cannot use my license to get a job but I am in 100k debt from student loans and my home is in foreclosure so I need a job that pays halfway decent to survive. I have to wait 6 months to apply for reinstatement and I have to go for an eval again prior to applying so I have to have money for that too. I have 13 years nursing experience 5 LPN and 8 years RN as charge nurse and staff nurse in hospitals, long term acute care, pediatrics, lab, correctional and homecare, so if anyone know of what other jobs I can use my degree to get a job until I apply for reinstatement. Thank you and i will fight this to the end and i figured doing what they ask me to do to prove my innocence will ll come out in the end I pray. The board told me that they did not believe me and if i did not go for an inpatient eval or treatment my license will be suspended. Getting the eval is my way of proving that i have not relapsed and i am willing to prove it anyway possible. The board told me also that they hear that kind stuff everyday so what i am telling them is falling on deaths ears because they have every excuse on earth. I figured since i have been in the problem all this time an never had a postive screen, all good reports from my aftercare, therpist and everything else they asked me to do and also having two negative screens since that screen. I can understand what they are saying because i am sure they have heard every excuse under the sun but with my history should have counted for something but i guess not.

Hello my fellow recovering nurses I need a little advice because i am going for a five day evaluation on Monday. I am a nurse in Louisiana and I am in the RNP and have been since June 2007 when the board saved me from my disease. I have been clean and sober since June 15 2007 and in Feburary I was informed that i had a postive drug screen for Darvocet. I know I have not been using anything and I requested that the other half of the specimen be tested to make sure that was correct and it still came back postive. I know i had not been using and explained it to my case worker at the board and i was informed that i had to for an five day inpatient evaluation. I did not get all upset because i knew from the beginning that I am seen as an addict and what i say is probably not going to be trusted. I offered to do a hair screen to prove i have not been using and was denied. I understand from their standpoint that if the test come back postive my word is not going to mean anything and i can respect that. I accepted that i had a problem in June 2007 and have worked a strong recovery after a 45 day inpatient in the beginning because i was also suffering from depression and that was addressed also. I have not had any problems while in the program since i have been enrolled and i am scheduled to get out in Feb 2011. I have no problem doing the evaluation that i had to go borrow money for because i am not working but my thing is that i know i have not been using and i have a strong feeling that they may say that i am in denial about using again and may recommend treatment because i plan on telling them the truth that i have not been using and i have not relapsed. I have gotten 2 drug screens after that postive and they were both negative, i do not want to act like they are out to get me or their test is wrong but i know i have not been using. I just do not want to go there and they end up recommending all kinds of treatment when i am telling them the truth about not relapsing. I did some research on hair analysis and hope that if they do it at the evaluation it would prove that i have not relapsed. Does anyone have an advice or have experience with this type of situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated because i have been stressing about this all week:crying2:. Thanks in advance

Hello I have the same exact situation so do not feel alone. I have been in the RNP in LA for the past 15 months and do not have action against my license either just the 6 month restriction on giving narcotics. I have been on 15+ (I stopped counting), with one scheduled for this Friday. I have 8 years of experience, very knowledgeable, skillful but at the interviews they always start off wonderful then when I drop the bomb the whole thing changes. I self reported and I failed my annual drug screen so it was not employment related and it does not matter, I think all they see is a drug addict. It gets hard at times but I was told by someone and firmly believe that if a facility will not hire me because of my illness, it is probably better that way. If they cannot understand that addiction is not all the same and that we do recover. Keep your head up and it will happen. Just remember the Serenity prayer.:flowersfo

hi you are not alone in your struggle. i am new here and i am in the recovering nurse program in my state. i have been for about a year. i have been searching for a job for about 3 months now. i have had maybe 10 or more interviews and have had no luck at all. i have been a nurse for 8 years in different settings. it is very discouraging but i know i take responsibility for my part in this situation. i ended up in the program because tested postive for my yearly drug screen. i had been working for agency for about 4 years so i had nowhere to return to. i reported myself and got into the rnp problem and have been very compliant. i know it is hard for an employer to trust someone who is in the rnp. i always go into the interview and inform them up front about my status in the rnp and my restrictions. i do that because i do not want them to think i am trying to hide anything and also to not waste anyones time. mrs. papa do not give up or get down because i thought i was the only person going through this and it is comforting to know it is not only me. i admire you because you are a strong person and give me inspiration. thanks:icon_hug::urck:

hi i'm new here and i am a registered nurse. i have been in the rnp since june of 2007. i have been searching for employment for about 3 months now. i have had countless interviews, they all seem to go well until i mention i am in the rnp with some restrictions. i have 8 years of nursing experience. i have experience in urgent care, nursing home, home health, labortory, medical surgical, ob/gyn, long term acute care, private duty(pediatric), charge, floor. i am very computer literate because while going to nursing school i worked in a hospital as a clerical data technican (ward clerk). i have never had trouble finding a job before. i understand that i caused this but i am compliant with my program and it will not go on my license because i reported myself. i have the following restrictions: cannot give narc for 6 months, cannot work nights, and random drug screens and meetings. i have not had any luck and it is very disappointing. if somene can please give any recommendations of anywhere they know is rnp friendly it would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance:cry:
