  1. I'll tell you what, I'm really just a sit back and observe kind of guy. Oh, and believe me, it's not a mistake I am like that. What I have really noticed about the "General Hospital" environment is you can be really "tight" with one co-worker on one night (or day) and put that same person with another co-worker and they seem to "turn" on you. I'm definitely not shovenistic or anything, but, being a female dominate career, I find this happens mainly with my female co-workers. I'm not sure if you girls work with any male nurses or not, but, if you do, do you find that this type of scenario happens only with the female nurses? No biggie...just curious.
  2. hello all. some of the nurses and myself were discussing how we could thank our cna's for all the hard work they do. i must add, our cna's are awesome! i work at one of the mercy hospitals on the med-surg floor. we tried to brainstorm some ideas such as a gift, a meal, you know, the basic things. so, this morning, i sat down and started writing a poem. once i finished it, i contacted the publisher for our hospital newspaper and she had me e-mail it to her. it will be published this week. here it is, give me some feed back if you will: to mercy's nursing assistants: you have no idea-- how you touch the lives of others with all that you do-- for our sisters and our brothers and our mothers and our fathers-- of our families and our friends you say it's just your job-- but that really makes no sense it's all the extra things that you do-- when you think they're all unseen like when you go beyond your line-of-duty-- it's those things that i mean so i'm writing you today-- to let you know just how we feel not just me, but from all the nurses-- as their feelings i promised to reveal it's hard to put it all in words-- i really don't know where to start so this poem i have to offer-- as god gives you a place in his heart we really couldn't do our jobs without you-- and i'm speaking on everyone's behalf god bless you all--you are appreciated-- from the entire nursing staff thank you! anonymous author.
  3. Crystal, I am currently working full-time, nights at a hospital. My shift starts at 6:00pm and I get out at 6:30am. My wife and I have three kids; a 4 year-old, a 2 year old, and an 11 month old baby. I just finished nursing school in June of this year (and yes, my last two children were born while I was a full-time nursing student). I started working in the hospital the same month I graduated from school. My wife started her prerequisite classes in August, she is going for nursing as well. She just finished the Fall semester and is starting the Winter semester next month. The only problem we have is she will be going to school four days/week. Since I work twelve hour shifts, I only have to work three days/week. I spoke with my staffing coordinator at the hospital and she agreed to allow me to work every weekend. My point is, "where there is a will--there is a way!" That's really my situation in a nutshell. Of course it was a long road to reach my achievement. I am, nevertheless, a registered nurse now. Getting back to your situation; my suggestion to you is to take this whole thing one step at a time. First of all, I would contact your college and find out the layout of their nursing program. They usually can provide a yearly tentative schedule for you which will list the required days and hours for your attendance. I think this will help you decide what you need to do at this present time with your busy home schedule. Actually, I think nursing school should be your main concern because their schedule is usually not as flexible as an employer's would be. Some schools have an on-campus day care. I hope this info helped? What ever you decide, I wish you luck. I will tell you this, nursing is a very rewarding carreer. I love my job. :)
  4. "THE PLUG" I've been sleeping for days--may I please have a break from my mind? As the colors flow fiercely, piercing objects--I grasp on to the concept-- But only for a moment; as it shreds away beyond my reach of dreams...then it unfolds; I can now tell the difference The difference between two scents as they separate from one aroma, Like two brothers of the same father not knowing their mother-- Two stipulations of a contract that are spelled out the same, yet having two different meanings when they fall from the law It's summertime now I can feel the warmth of the sun as it beats on my face and runs through to my toes Not knowing where the chill came from--I try to collect all my thoughts But then it dawns on me Is this a visitor from the past? Do I know you, or owe you an explanation of my thoughts? "Go away;" so I think Safety is only an issue of your conscience Insecurity--like a beast from the pit, Keeps beating you down like you're a villain on the screen So you reach for reality Why? So they can tame your dreams and shape your nightmares to the things they fear most? Life... What is it anyway? For every one of these questions I present follows an infinite array of 'so-called' answers I cannot reproduce my imagination into a conceptual object for others to ponder Living, and breathing-in our atmosphere, is about the most remote task one can feel accomplished with For it is our destiny that fuels the slaves of our mind to keep it all together Harmonious gestures of the song deep within-- As it flows through your head unconsciously throwing emotions Now comes the tear As you try to dry off your eye you think of the Wiseman who wrote you this note "Who is this disturbed soul," so the 'others' ask? You just smile quietly to yourself ...As they're pulling the plug
