How short-staffed is short staffed?????
Unsafe is my only response. I do know that LTC staffs short & it's only the residents and staff that suffer. & yes, profit. Hospitals are looking to profit as well.

Prison vs. Hospital Nursing--any politics?
Wow, I was hoping that the DOC system would be better. I'm not looking to be a manager just a staff RN. I'm in my mid 40's, have 10 yrs. of hospital experience & have 2 kids/spouse. Just looking for some money to help with the bills & I love nursing. I hope things work out better for you. Are you a union employee? Good luck.

Prison vs. Hospital Nursing--any politics?
I feel that there might be less politics in a union/state job in a prison than a private hospital on a small psych unit that's looking for press ganey scores with a manager with an associates degree in nursing that trying to prove her worth.

Short Staffed - Vent
My old manager left abruptly at 1530 regardless of how bad we were doing with staffing and absolutely refused to get us help i.e., sitters when there were doctors orders, CNA, etc. My husband can't understand why I want to work in a prison but I don't think people are knocking each over to get those jobs or "climb to the top" where it's like that in hospitals. I have 10 yrs. exper. as an RN & the only place I've worked in is a hospital & they're all the same. I'm done for now & am awaiting clearance to work in a prison in IL. Wish me luck. GL to you 2. :paw:

How short-staffed is short staffed?????
Wow! If you don't mind me asking, what region of the US do you live in? Can the LPN's take teams or I guess you would be overseeing them as well? In the prison where I'm awaiting a job, the LPN's can do everything except start IV's. There is also a med tech that passes meds. My job used to be nice but I have gotten used to and now appreciate now working there. Hope you find yourself something better. Hold your head up, we worked hard for our RN license.

Starting in Correctional Nursing- TOMORROW!
I'm waiting for clearance from IDOC to hear when I can go in for my drug test and start working. I have been out of work for 4 weeks now and am looking forward to bring a paycheck home. My husband really doesn't want me to work at a prison but after my last job, if you weren't in the inner brown nose circle, you were out. I thought there was a nursing shortage but not according to this hospital. We weren't treated very good and didn't even get time and a half for holiday pay. Keep me posted, I'm anxious to hear about how it is. The prison I'm applying for is a Max 5, 2800 male felons. Good luck!

Prison vs. Hospital Nursing--any politics?
I'm awaiting clearance from DOC for a prison job. They are looking for a nursing supervisor 11-7 shift--non union and 3-11 RN's union. My last job I was inappropriately asked to either resign or be terminated. I was so tired of my boss, the politics & the close circle of Yes people on that tiny unit that I just resigned. It was devestating--first shock, then anger, depression and now resolution. My attendance was perfect & I have a stack of MVP cards to back up my good performance. She wanted me out to make room for a family friend--new grad. I was told I should get a lawyer to show how her tactics were untrue but actually I didn't have it in me. I have now been off almost a month, with no unemployment and have found it almost enjoyable to just putz around, garden, deep clean, etc. I have worked my entire life with the exception of 2 years (kids). I am a strong believer in things happening for a reason & going through the emotions of losing a job & a paycheck might be worth it in the end.

How short-staffed is short staffed?????
I recently worked on a psych unit and we had geriatric, schizos, major depressed, police holds all on a narrow hallway (14 total in all). We got yelled at and chastised for restraining, were refused sitters and also got second guessed when prning the patients. Also, the boss took away the safety glass at the nursing station stating that it wasn't patient friendly. So, no privacy or safety. I have had security officers armed come up to the unit to help and tell me that they would not want my job for anything. There were 2 nurses and a clerk. So I know about understaffing. I am now awaiting a job for a prison--at least that's safe.

termination
I recently was asked to either resign or be terminated for undermedicating an elderly patient with prn ativan. The dose was 1 mg and I gave her the other half of a .5 (so 0.25mg of po ativan). Also, my old boss (this is on a psych. floor) kept adding, changing and revising forms and added a treatment care plan form. I admitted a patient --illiterate, non-english speaking and apparently in no need of being a patient on the floor. She had refused to sign any of the paperwork and was scared to be on the unit. I worked mother's day and a following Tuesday, was scheduled to work on Friday--showed up to work only to find her assistant standing at the time clock. My old boss produced her petition with her filling it out in blue ink in english & her treatment plan and told me the petition was unacceptable and the treatment plan was incomplete. When I told her that the patient was inappropriately admitted and the treatment plan was not appropriate for her either she dismissed that. Also, she had me drug tested (-) and tried to get me on that. It is a very small unit and people jump as high as they can for her. I ended up resigning and am now awaiting a position as an RN in a jail. Hospital politics--too much.
