Lpn Test
We had a book that prepared us for the NCLEX test along with a computer CD. That was the most helpful to me. Brush up every subject!! You just don't know what each test will concentrate on. I also went to the bookstore and bought NCLEX flashcards and I thought they were helpful. Good luck!

HELP!! Being blackmailed by ADON
Thanks everyone! I feel much better about this situation now that I know it is not the norm.

Unsafe Staffing
I have also been faced with this dilemma. I am a new LPN graduate and we cannot even go onto the floor (literally). You have to clock in before you can enter the elevator so you won't even know your assignment until after you have clocked in, making it impossible to take the chance of being charged with abandonment. I think this sucks! How do you report a facility for such policies? Is it the health department or the Board of your state? I went in as a nurse, they put me on the floor as an aide and then gave me 26 patients! Aides don't get report but if I leave I have to clock back out and therein lies the dilemma, your held to your highest level of education and thus, abandonment. Any thoughts out there on this? How do you get around this without abandonment issues?

HELP!! Being blackmailed by ADON
Help!! I am a new graduate in nursing and my first job has been a complete nightmare. They hired me as a LPN nurse and trained me for 3 days and after 2 weeks started scheduling me as an STNA. I complained to the ADON about being scheduled as an STNA to no avail. To make a long story short, last night I went in to work and again they had me scheduled as an STNA but they had added the duties of housekeeper!! I had 32 patients! I had no way to not accept the assignment because it is 3rd shift and no one there but the employees prior to me so they left me holding the bag. I waited until another STNA came onto the floor gave her report and reported to the floor LPN that I quit. Now they are threatening me with abandonment. I gave report to the STNA and reported to what would have been the aide's supervisor, the LPN on the hall. I thought I protected my license.... did I or am I going to lose my license 3 months after graduation. I feel like I am being blackmailed!! Where do I get a lawyer for this?

1st Job in Nursing Questions
I have several questions as a new LPN in my first job. 1. Is it common out there to be hired as a nurse then once you are trained they schedule you as an aide instead? I have only been at this job for 3 months and it seems to be a regular thing where I am working at. We were taught in school that you could be putting your nursing license in jeopardy because you are held responsible for your highest level of education. Is this common? 2. We use med carts (not computerized) to do med passes and if a patient doesn't have a medication we are supposed to search the cart to see if anyone else takes it and use that. The ADON said there is no reason not to give a medication and if you can't find it in the cart or the Emergency Drug Kit to initial that you gave it anyway and call the pharmacy (not on premises) to have it dropped shipped. Illegal as hell but nobody seems to have a problem doing this but me. Is this the norm? 3. On night shift there are no maintenance, dietary, or housekeeping personnel. Is it normal for them to ask you to do these jobs also? They schedule two new nurses at the same time so we don't know when we should object and what is the norm for the "real world" It doesn't seem right to be unable to provide patient care because I am trying to fix the fax machine or repair a TV for a resident. 4. Is there a limit on how many patients a LPN can manage? I am at a nursing home and they have two new LPNs with 32 patients each. It seems like all I have time to do is med passes and no one-on-one care. Needless to say I quit this job after 3 months but am now second guessing a nursing career.... I feel like I got in over my head but am wondering if it is just a really bad facility. Thanks in advance for any support out there.
