Vandy Nurse Residency ?s
I too am starting Jan 26 and am coming from out of state. I was really interested in working somewhere with the new grad residency program. I interviewed at UVA, NY presbyterian, Georgetown and Vandy. While the pay was the lowest at Vandy- the thing I liked the most was that it allowed you to have a track in mind, but rotate through different floors before committing to work. Ex: I am a critical care resident so I will rotate for 6 or 8 weeks through Burn, Trauma, Surgical, PACU, CVICU, Neuro etc... and then match to where I want to work. I think this is so helpful because one thing I have learned throughout nursing school is that your interests change. It will be nice to be exposed to a floor before committing to work. Big selling point for me. The interview style was behavioral questioning. it's an E-A-R question interview. E-Event: tell them what happend A- Action: tell them what action you took in response to the event R- Results: what happened as a result of your intervention. My class was heavily instructed on these interviews so that's the only reason I was prepared. For ex a question type would be: Tell me about a noncompliant patient and what you did to promote compliance. There are about a million questions online about behavioral interview questions.. Google them. Hope this helps :)

New RN looking for some Guideness
I wish I could tell you Charleston is the place to be. I'm just graduated from MUSC. There are a couple of big hospitals, MUSC, Roper, and Trident Medical Center. MUSC is in a financial crisis they expanded and built a hospital that was out of their budget and are now paying for it. They've told everyone no pay raises, fired all the travelers and people in my class could not get jobs to save their lives. They have recently started interviewing people again, especially for Neuro Stepdown... If you are interviewing for surgical oncology at MUSC- I had clinical there and really liked it... so that's a plus.. Just beware- the atmosphere at the hospital is a little iffy.. Roper- is by far my favorite hospital, if you can get an interview there.. GO! They have their MAGNET visit next week- so hopefully they will become Magnet certified in January or February. Really nice hospital, in the process of major renovation, really friendly/happy staff.. You can't beat Charleston... So if you can get in a stable job.. do it!

RN-MSN at MUSC...any input?
The MSN program at MUSC whether it's BSN-MSN, ASN-MSN or just MSN is about to shut down. I'm a BSN student graduating in December from MUSC and my class is the last class that can go through the MSN program. They have to start in January and go full time with no stops through December 2010- if they have any breaks in classes.. pregnancy/ marriage/ death.. they are out of the program because they have only 5 semesters to get in and get out before the MSN is replaced by the DNP degree. MUSC's advanced practice degree starting August 2009 will be the DNP. So my guess is- since you are asking about the program- there is no chance that you will be starting in January- so just know that MUSC's master program is on the way out. Hope this helps

Vanderbilt Residency interview...help!
Hey guys! RoxieJay- I saw you interviewed today- How did it go? I'm a week from Wednesday- October 29th. My first choice was adult critical care/ then peds.. I'm excited. Any tidbits of info to share? By the way- did anyone who interviewed get shift diffs or critical care diff? I don't know why but when I spoke to the recruiter I didn't get those numbers! Any other info would be greatly appreciated!

New Grad Residency
Hey! NYP cornell- every new graduate that is hired is in the residency program for 12 months. This does not replace however long you are in orientation. Rey Rivera, the recruiter said that your residency cohort depends on your orientation state/finish date. At month 6 you work on an evidenced based research project that you present... At NYP columbia- you get hired by Columbia- apply for the residency (once you have a job) and 25 students are taken. You have general orientation and then 6 months of residency. In addition, you can choose to be an intern.. which is all about "finding your voice as a new nurse"-- basically how to be confident in dealing with MDs. The program sounds great! For both hospitals, you apply to a specific unit. I really wanted a residency program where they rotate you through- but I never found one that did that.

New Grad Residency
I just met with the residency coordinator at NYP Columbia- and let me just say I was so impressed. With the program, with the hospitals. The new graduate nurse residency coordinator is phenomenal. I'm obviously not in the program (yet!) but from everything she described, it sounds like a very thorough program. I talked to someone on the phone for NYP Cornell (Upper East side) and their program is 12 months and every new graduate is automatically in the program. The new grad residency at NYP Columbia only accepts 25 students every 6 months. Their residency program is only 6 months. I think both hospitals have their advantages though. Hope this helps some

UVA new grad job
For anyone that hasn't had their interview yet.. I did a phone interview.. They were very nice. They asked a lot of questions.. Most of them you expected.. personal strengths and weaknesses, team work etc.. but a few really threw me off.. ex: when was the last time you broke a rule (a speeding ticket does not count) some just really stumped me.. Good luck!

Will i be hard to find a job?
Cammy- That's so good to hear! one more question.. Did you have tech experience (lpn/patient care tech) something before you applied? I have had previous jobs but none in healthcare- my program was an Accelerated- bsn and it left NO time to work in the hospital....

Will i be hard to find a job?
Cammy429- Do you like NYP as a new grad? Ive been in touch with their recruiter and new grad program coordinator- and they seem awesome. I'm looking for a job for January- and they said they don't interview for January until Novemberish.. so I'm just kind of in a wait zone- but I really want to be there! And I'm so glad to hear you say you hadn't done clinicals there- that made me worry, I'm from SC so obviously I haven't done clinical there....

Nyp
Hey Everyone, I am graduating from an Accelerated BSN program in Charleston, SC in December. YAY! I tentatively registered for boards today for the second week in December. I just had some questions. I applied to NYP for a few jobs and have had great experiences with their recruiter and new graduate residency coordinator. However, NYC interviews much later than any other place I’ve applied.. which is unfortunate because NYC is my first choice. I am very interested in the NYP_cornell residency program. The recruiter told me that they would start talking to new potential Rns in November for potential jobs in January. I was told my the residency coordinator that a new cohort starts in March. Does that mean I wouldn’t be able to work until march? Anyone in the program or just finished with it? Is housing assistance available? Any help is greatly appreciated as this is where I really want to be!

Wake Forest/ UNC/ Duke residency programs
I am looking into new graduate residency programs and from the look of hospital websites, the only one that I could determine that had a new graduate nurse residency program was Wake Forest. I have called all these hospitals multiple times (especially Wake) and have emailed them- and have yet to hear. Does anyone have any information? Thanks

Accelerated BSN? Associates? HELP!
I don't know how you feel about relocation, but I am in an accelerated BSN program in Charleston, SC. I am at the Medical University of Sc. Our program is 16 months (4 semesters year round). We admit in both the spring and the fall.. I think the application deadline for spring is September 15. We used to require the GRE for acceptance but starting for the class of spring 09 it's no longer required. The prereqs are: Micro, Anat/ Physio (whether that's one Anatomy and One physiology class or Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2-- you just have to have 8 hours human anatomy and physio.. and then 4 hours of a science elective (astronomy, physics, general bio.. whatever) The only two other classes that might not be fufilled in your current degree would be, Psych: Human growth and development and ANY statistics course. The website is www.musc.edu/nursing I used to work in admissions before I started the program, so if you are interested, I would be happy to help you. It's a quick program so that's definately a plus.

How much does a RN in SC make?
I currently live in Charleston and I would say the average rent for a two bedroom apt is around 1100$. I have not been able to find a one bedroom apt for less than 850$ (in downtown/ James Island/ Mt Pleasant area)-- i pick these areas because they are in such close proximity to MUSC/ and Roper. I do not know the seasoned nurse salary- but the newer nurse salary has or is about to become 23.05$/ hr I think not counting shift differential. Hope this helps

Nurse Residency Programs
I have looked at a lot of these. I originally planned on Vanderbilt, but compared to EVERYWHERE else, they pay terrible. I haven't found anywhere that pays less. I contacted University of Maryland and got a great amount of information but didn't realize- is their internship 2 years? I have also applied to UVA and Georgetown (DC).. I can't seem to get anyone to put me through at Washington Hospital Center.... So overwhelming! I just want an experience that is really going to teach me everything I didn't learn in nursing school and give me opportunities for advancement

Nurse Residency Programs
I am going to be a new BSN grad in december and am very interested in finding a great graduate nurse residency program. I am not very particular on a location- I would like to stay on the East Coast if possible.. but like I said I'm not very particular. Does anyone have any recommendations about nurse residency programs? Thanks so much!
