Is anyone here familiar with UF health benefits specifically tuition reimbursement/ tuition waiver at UF? I want to be able to compare their education benefit to other organizations in Gainesville. Also if you have any idea about their nurse: patient ratio specifically in any of the emergency departments I'd appreciate that too. Thanks

I've done this for the past few years. Before I was married I paid for my insurance out of pocket, but still took home more than I would if I was full time. Now my husband takes care of the benefits.

My current hospital uses Meditech....HATE IT,!! I think only the people who've never used anything else would actually like it. My last two hospitals used HEC (McKesson), now that I really liked...never used epic, but never heard anything bad either

I was offered $24 with five year experience and a specialty certification in Gainesville.....not sure what new grads make, but if an experienced rate is that bad then the new grad rate must suck!

Hello, I have never traveled before but I am considering it. The main thing I want to know is what happens if you don't complete a travel contract due to medical reasons (ex. Bedrest or preterm labor). I am moving to a town with only two hospital systems. I am also 3 months pregnant. I would really like to work for system A, but I know I won't qualify for FMLA y the time I deliver. I opted not to apply there because I don't want to have to resign if they're not willing to offer me a leave of absence in place of maternity leave. I have applied at system B and received a call about a position, but no offer yet. I prefer not to be unemployed for 6 months before my baby comes so the only other option I see is to take a travel position. I know assignments are usually 13 wks, which would end before my due date. This is my first pregnancy so I have no idea what's in store for me. My concern is what the outcome would be if I took a travel assignment and wasn't able to finish it due to something out of my control like being put on bedrest or having my baby earlier than expected. Any feedback would be appreciated. By the way, I'm an ER nurse with all my certs and five yrs ER experience. Thanks.

What part of the country do hospitals still have IV teams? It seems like they've gotten rid of them in the southeast (except children's hospitals). I've been an ER nurse for 5yrs and IV starts are my thing! I've come across very few Veins I couldn't cannulate.....if I could find a job where that's pretty much all I had to do, I'd be quite happy with it

What exactly is the trauma program coordinator responsible for? At my last job the trauma coordinator taught TNCC and the TNS class and did some quality assurance work, but aside from that she was never seen in the department. At my current job, it seems to be the same. I want to believe there is more to the job than what I can see. Any input?

Have any of you ever worked at a freestanding ER? What were the pros and cons? I recently moved and there were none in my previous state, so I don't know a whole lot about them. So far, the only thing I've heard from nurses I work with is that the free standings pay more, but I'm thinking there has to be a reason why. Feel free to tell me what you know.

Hi all, I trying to do my research mainly regarding staffing in TEXAS hospitals. I'm an ER nurse, but I'd still like to hear from you if ur in another specialty. Here goes a couple of questions: 1) what is the standard nurse: patient ratio in your ER? 2) what is the standard tech : patient ratio in your ER? 3) does your hospital have a trauma designation? If so, what level? 4) how many beds does your ER have? 5) does your ED have a SANE program or have SANEs on staff? 6)what's the name of your hospital, or at least what city is it located in? thanks for your time

Do you work away from the bedside? What is your job title? How much and what type of experience did you need to get the position? I am currently an ER nurse with four years experience, but my current position is making me feel like it may be best to step away from the bedside at least for a while. I had never really considered my nursing career being non-bedside because I absolutely loved what I do. I still love what I do, just not under the current conditions. I did my research and realized that it's not just my department, but it's the same issues citywide at least. My husband and I have decided to move back out of state, but I feel like I need to try something else in the meantime to protect my sanity and my license. Please share what you do.

I've been trying to get the same info for experienced nurses. Generally, it seems like most ppl don't want to answer questions about pay. Good luck!

Thanks zmanc. As far as patient care, I feel like I can take care of my patients, but they aren't getting my absolute best. By that I mean, I'm still very careful with meds and thinking critically about the patients situation, but when it comes to the simple things of taking an extra two minutes to listen to a story ms soandso started while I was starting her IV, I can't. I feel like from the time I walk in to the time I clock out each minute is full of stuff. As far as management I just kinda feel like I might be too new to bring up this type of stuff. At the same time, I want things to improve as soon as possible. This is why I'm trying to get a feel of what other ERs are like so can recondition my mind if the problem is me.

So I moved to a new city because my husband got a better job there. I'm indifferent about the city but I absolutely hate my new job. The ppl seem nice but the way the department flows gets to me. I'm trying to figure out if my old job just spoiled me or if there really is a problem with the new place. Here goes..... me: ER nurse with BSN, CEN, BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC. And four years experience. old job: level 2 trauma center in big city. Nurse patient ratio of 3:1 standard, but up to 4:1 in main ED. 5:1 in ED Obs. Spectra link phones for each nurse assignment. Notified of new patient by phone whether coming from triage or from EMS. Monitor tech works radio, flow coordinator or shift supervisor assigns bed, then monitor tech calls RN with quick repot on incoming pt and ETA. No nurse gets 2 patients at the same time unless you have the last 2 open beds, if so trauma nurse checks in one patient. 6:1 patient ratio for techs. RT in department. 2 overnight docs. 47beds in main ed, 10 in Ed Obs. 2 triage RN. new job: level 4 trauma center in big city that's smaller than old city. Nurse :patient ratio 4-5:1 standard but up to 6:1 including hallway patients. Walkie talkies for communication. No notification of new patients assigned to rooms. Monitor tech watching monitors and recording cycled vitals from monitor. Ems beds assigned by charge nurse. Triage patients assigned by triage nurse. Any clinical staff answers ems radio. Normal to get triage patient and ems walking to your rooms at the same time. 6:1 patient ratio for techs. RT not assigned to ER, covers whole hospital. 1 overnight doc. 17 beds, 9extra open during peak hours. No ED Obs. 1 triage nurse. Does either of these places sound like your ER? Was my old job just a rare situation? I feel miserable at the new job, how long would you give it before you decided to leave if you were in my shoes? Can anybody tell me what it's like in south florida (Palm beach county and south)? I'm really trying to adjust...I keep telling myself it will get better, but by the end of each shift I hate it more? As far as pay, they're both the same give or take a few cents. I'm wondering if it's just the culture in the new city because my husband is in a completely different industry and hates his job too....and were both usually very easy to please. Help me figure this out!

Thanks for your response Nalon 1. What is SWAT? It sounds like that's what I would be looking for. I'm an ER nurse, but for a second job I'd want something a lot less hectic. Starting IVs is one of my favorite things to do, especially when they're a "hard stick". A job starting IVs all day would be the easiest money I ever made.

I just moved to Texas, so far I was considering a second job with a hospital IV team, but so far there doesn't seem to be any hospital based IV teams. Do any of the hospitals in or near San Antonio have IV teams?

I have been speaking with a private company that states they hold all the nursing contracts with the hospital for civilian nurses. Basically, they say they exclusively staff civilian nurses at the facility. If I were to take an RN position there through them, then I would be their employee and not an employee of SAMMC. I was wondering if there is any other route to be employed as a civilian RN at that hospital other than with this company. I don't have anything against the company, i just would feel more comfortable being a direct employee of the hospital. I have seen jobs at that hospital posted on cpol and USAJobs, but I am not sure how it works. Also, if you have worked there (or know what company i'm referring to) what are your thoughts on being a civilian RN at a military hospital and/or being employed by that company. Any info would be appreciated....Thanks in advance!

So, I just got hired at Northeast Baptist and I forgot to ask one simple question.....What color scrubs do the RNs wear? I live out of state and I've never actually been to the hospital so I have no idea....I was just so excited about being offered the position that uniform color completely slipped my mind!

Hello, I am a civilian RN and I'm moving to San Antonio shortly. I was contacted by Medtrust Staffing regarding an ER position at SAMMC. I've been trying to research both the agency and the hospital and not much is coming up as far as reviews. SAMMC is one of only 2 level 1 trauma centers in the city so I expect I would get great exposure/ experience working in their ER. However, I don't know anything about working at a military hospital. Have any of you ever worked at SAMMC ER? If so, can you tell me what I can expect as far as typical patient acuity, nurse: patient ratios, paper vs computer charting etc? Also if anyone has worked with Medtrust Staffing can you share experiences with them as far as administrative stuff like getting pain on time, quality of benefits, etc?? I am still going to speak with their recruiter, but I want to gather as much information on my own first. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi all, I will be moving to San Antonio within the next three months. I am an ER nurse with my BSN, CEN, BLS, ACLS, and TNCC. In February I will do PALS (never needed it before). As of March 201, I will have 4years nursing experience (all in ED). I've done some research on the hospitals in the area, but I'd prefer to hear from someone who has actually been there. I've found a couple of posts on here about San Antionio, but they are all at least 3yrs old (alot can change at a hospital in 3yrs. I'd like to know what I can expect as far as pay, benefits, nurse:patient ratios , even traffic in the area, etc. Anything you are willing to share would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

At the ED where I work, we are required 4hours of call per pay period. since 36 hours is full time, if you do get called in it would not be OT.Our schedules run fo a whole month,so we have the option of picking up the call shifts 4hrs each payperiod or for 8hr on one day to cover the whole month's requirement. call pay is $4/hr and if call back is time and a half. Its not that bad, it's just that we've only been doing this for the past 6 months, so being on call still feels like house arrest

Do you guys change your driver license to the new state every time you take an assignment in a new state?? For instance, you live in FL and have a FL driver's license, then you take a 13wk assignment in GA....do you change your driver's license to GA?? I was told by a police officer in GA that you would have to change your license each time you take an assignment in a different state. That didn't sound like it made much sense to me, so I'm check ing with you guys to see if any of you have run into that in the past.
