"new orders" we have pts with 10 consults and all 10 come in on the same day and write "new orders" for the same pt, some of them contradicting each other!!!:angryfire

Took care of an 80 something year old lady who'd had bladder surgery through the urethra. She said "It's been YEARS since I've had anything down there. That doc just made himself at home!" I replied "I bet he didn't even buy you dinner first!" The tech added "Honey you deserved dinner a movie AND a night at the Holiday Inn!!" The pts reply "I sure as hell did!!! He owes me!!" We all cracked up!!

If someone asks or mentions it, I tell them how hard it is to get into nursing school, how hard it is to be in nursing school especially with a family or a job, and how hard it is to be a nurse (the physical, mental and emotional toll it takes on a person). However whenever there is a nursing student on my unit, I try to be encouraging and helpful to them. I remember having b#####s for nurses while I was in school who seemed to have forgotten what it was like to be a student!! I vow to not be one of those!!

My school taught us that if you're looking at side affects always go with N/V!! Go with your gut! If your first instinct is answer A, then go with it. I had a few meds that I didn't recognize on my NCLEX, so I just went with my first instinct. I passed in 75 ques. Good Luck!!

As a student I had to wear all white. What kind of a fool makes someone who deals with blood and poop wear white??? Where I work we have a different color for each day as long as it's scrubs. ICU- red, white and blue another hospital all RN's must wear navy blue, CNA's wear ugly puke green. I can see where patients would get confused. My name badge has a gigantic RN on it. I think that's a good idea.

I worked part time the first 2 semesters of nursing school and was able to manage it just fine. At my school the 3rd semester is the toughest...it just so happened that I was able to quit my job just before that semester. Didn't work the last two semesters...lived on loans...enjoyed the "extra time" If you have to work, you'll find a way to make it work...nurses always do. If you don't have to work, don't. Focus on school and family. You'll find a job either way. Hospitals have special programs or extra long orientations for new grads so you really don't need experience. You'll gain plenty of that during school!! Good luck!!

My school had what's called a "HELP loan". It got me and my 2 boys thru the last 2 semesters of nursing school. ask your financial aid advisor.

Wow!! I'm about to start my floor orientation....now I'm scared. The people and the NM all seem very nice and even glad that I'm coming on. Wish me luck!! Sorry you had such a bad experience. I doesn't have to be this way.

I graduated in May and JUST started my first job last week. I would apply to several places and not hear anything from anyone for at least a month and if I would call them to see if they received my application, I would never hear back from anyone. Another frustration is the "experience required" syndrome. How are we supposed to gain experience if they won't give us a chance??? In addition to that, most places require new grads to work nights. I can't...single mom with two school age kids. I finally found a place that's willing to let me work days. Focus on the positive. At least you currently have a job and can keep working until you find something else. I know it's frustrating. Keep your chin up! It'll happen!!
