Help with community education!
Hello everyone!! I am a first year RN, and I love the aspect of patient education, and was wondering what are some community projects that you do in order to keep your community educated on health issues that affect their families and communities. So far I have started writting a health piece in my church newsletter, but am looking for more ways to get involved in educating my community. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ATI or Kaplan?
I took the ATI predictor and it said I had a 98% chance of passing NCLEX on the first attempt, and course I FAILED (265 qestions). I didnt think ATI was very helpful in my studying for NCLEX. For the second attempt I used Kaplan and Saunders and thought those were helpful for content and NCLEX style questions, and I passed on my second attemt (85 questions).

What kind of nursing bag do you have?
I bought a "boat and tote" bag from llbean. They are very durable, come in many colors and they can be as cheap as $17 depending on what size you want. My bag has doubled as a bookbag while in school as well. I have had my bag for over 4 years. I would highly recommend looking into it.

Jobs for Nursing Students
After finishing my sophmore year or Fundamental nursing courses I was able to apply for a job as a student technician. As stated above for the most part I do CA work, but if you work at a teaching hospital like I do you see a lot and there are some nurses that are willing to let you help (under their supervision) with certain skills. I work in the Pool, which means I float from all floors, so that helped be decide what areas of nursing I liked better than others. It also allowed me to pick my own hours and days I wanted to work and since your looking for a part time/ temporary job the Pool employees at my hospital only have to work a minimum of 24 hours a month. Its worth looking into in a hospital in your area because you can keep this job during school as well if you wanted.

4 months and no JOB!
Since my last post I have benn on two other interviews which were both for nursing homes, and they said I would only have 3-5 days of orientation, and then would be responsible for 17 patients during the day and 44 at night. I thought that was ridiculous and was not willing to put my license on the line, so I turned down both. So that still leaves me without a job. Im trying to be optimistic being that job at the VA will work itself out in January.

failed nclex twice
I felt the same way when I failed my NCLEX for the first time. The first failed attempt motivated me to look at what I was doing wrong. The first thing I was doing wrong was I was just reading the content to read, not to understand. You have to make sure you understand and can apply the content you are reading. The next thing I was doing wrong was when answering questions, If i got the question right I wouldn't read why the question was right or wrong. Inorder to fully understand the rationale you have to go back to your books and re-read the content. I would also recommend go ahead and setting your date early so that you know how much time you have to prepare and can prepare accordingly. After failing the first time I did 300 questions a day, and read my Mosby's and Saunders book! You have come to far, so now is not the time to feel depressed and discouraged. Find what works for you and you will have no problems the next time. I pray much success!!

Most helpful review books + question books HELP
When preparing for my NCLEX I found Mosby's and Saunders to most helpful with content and applying the content, and Kaplan to be most effective in preparing you for the type of questions you will see on the NCLEX!

85 QS for NCLEX RN test , PASS OR FAIL?
I also had 85 questions on my NCLEX and I passed! I felt very confident after taking my test, so I guess you can say I had a gut feeling. But there is no way you can judge whether you passed or failed according to the number questions you have! I wish you the best of luck and try not to worry yourself to much!!

Trouble finding a job!
Im in the same boat, except that I graduated in Dec. 07. I took my boards in April for the first time and again in June when I passed. I intially thought I had a job until I was told they thought I had experience in September, so that left me without a job. In the past month I have applied to 11 jobs, and had two interviews. The hospital I work at also is under a hiring freeze, so maybe because I work there as a tech they are offering me a position as an RN. The best advice I can tell you is dont just limit your options to the hospital setting try nursing homes and doctor offices. Nursing homes are always hiring and although you might not get the best med surg experience, you can alway get nursing experience and transfer.

Anyone applied to MUSC New Grad Nurse Residency?
I currently work at MUSC as a tech, and from my knowledge their is supposed to be a hiring freeze, but after waiting 2 weeks for an interview for an RN position, I called the NM and asked if she had time to review my application, and we set an interview for the next day. You have to be persistent and make phone calls, because right now i believe everyone there is busy and just dont have the time to go through the many applications they recevie in quickest fashion! I also think the time for new grad hiring is around graduation times, (December, May) so for the most part right now many facilities have done most of their new grad hiring and will start rehiring new grads come December in order for new grad internships.

4 months and no JOB!
THANKS EVERYONE!!! Since the first post I have had to two interviews. My dilemma now is if I should start one of these positions and have to quit during orientation, because my "dream" job at the VA starts in January. I have almost been guaranteed a position, but dont want to put all my beans in one jar, and have something happen and I dont end up with a job. The two other jobs I cant even begin until mid-November and orientation is 12 weeks long, which means I would only have been through 6 weeks orientation before leaving, and I dont want to have to leave! Im just confused at what to do, because I need a job, but the job i REALLY want doesnt start until January!

4 months and no JOB!
I live in SC and currently have had my license for 4 months. I have applied to 5 hospitals and 6 nursing homes, and thought I had a job until they said they thought I had nursing experience so I had to wait until January to start their new grad program. I am so frustrated with how job hunting is going and am getting very discouraged with nursing. As of right now I have to keep my job as a tech until I can begin working as an RN. I am wondering if anyone else is going through this, and what are some other options out there in order to begin my career as an RN.
