  1. I was 42 yo when I decided to fulfill my life long dream. I felt very insecure and inadequate. I completed my pre-reqs, during which my husband had a double CABG, and then I was accepted into the program. I graduated "Outstanding Student of the Year" (ei, valedictorian). Being older actually helped me succeed, older students tend to want/need success more. My age also helped in getting employment after graduation, I was told it brings "life experience" to the position! BTW, the oldest student in my class was 63 yo! GO FOR IT!!!!!
  2. We are seeing more foriegn nurses and it makes me wonder if they will be preferred over new grads. One presidential candidate is interested in making it easier for foriegners to come to the US and work. I'm trying to get certified in my area to help with job security.
  3. I agree with those that suggest a facility change. Remember what drew you to nursing and try to be an advocate for change! It sounds like the pts need you!
  4. It was not a problem for us. I took two different positions at two different hosipitals, owing each, and the subject never came up. In fact, after working at one and developing a problem with the billing process, I arranged to have a payroll deduction - it worked out very well!! Don't let your fear stop you from applying!!
  5. I started working on an oncology/hemo floor that provides classes for us to become certified before we can administer chemo. So, I got the job first, then came certification.
  6. Rough spot! Must make it difficult to provide quality pt care in that environment!
  7. I guess it is no surprise that so many nurses where you work cover up their mistakes instead of creating an environment of learning and patient safety!
  8. Everywhere I have worked has had a policy that answering call lights was everyone's responsibility! It is a matter of pt safety as well as service and courtesy.
  9. I thought a color code system was a good idea was I was in nursing school. Then reality hit when I started to practice, patients will not remember and do not need the extra stress of trying to remember who wears what color. I recently started working on an oncology/hematology unit and many patients tell me that they appreciate the bright colors we wear. To identify ourselves EVERYONE must introduce themselves to the patients and their families. The hospital I work for also has RNs, LPNs, and TECHs wear the glow-in-the-dark badge that hangs below our hospital badge. Even physicians can identify this system!!
