I have heard through the grapevine, that some area hospitals are now hiring again and hiring new grads. Ocean Med, Kimball, Monmouth med, Riverview and Robert Wood Johnson. This is for Ocean and Monmouth Counties. Good luck to everyone :)

and......i'm happy to have everyone see the post. Shame on the hospital for treating people the way they did.

My references have already spoken to the recruiter from what i've been told. It wasn't just the recruiter. Not one person returned a call or followed thru. I only did what I was advised to do. i found it not only disappointing but very unprofessional. It is their loss. For those still looking, as I said earlier, Kimball seems to be the only one taking new grads now.

SBHCS, best of luck. I tried a few of their hospitals.....even had references. Unfortunately the nurse recruiter was not so pleasant and had other things to do than to recruit nurses, for Monmouth Med anyway. Try Kimball, a lot of my classmates were hired there. i would be very persistent, follow up with letters, calls, etc.

Well, someone finally hired me! It's not the hospital. Not one of the hospitals here in Monmouth Cty and the surrounding area, was willing to hire a new grad! I find this very disappointing. Any how, I accepted a position as a dialysis nurse. After meeting the managers, touring the facility and learning about my benefits, this is definitely a better fit than the hospital for me. i guess in the end, things always happen for a reason. thanks to everyone here

Thanks everyone for responding. I'm still looking, applying, calling, to everything at this point etc. I'm in Monmouth county, nj. one of the hospitals, even advertised specialty in the er and or for new grads. They lied! I'm not sure what is going here, if it is me, the area or just the wrong time. everyone wants experience, i'm a new grad nurse, i have experience in clinicals and my intership, where else can i get experience if no one hires me?!

In NJ most ask that you have some have med/surg experience, at least one year. Also, some of the hospitals will offer a training program for employees to transfer to the OR.

Thanks for the encouragement :) I have started to apply to LTC's, offices are not hiring, most are asking for MA's or LPN's. It really is slim pickin's around here..... i'm just waiting to hear, now, from the LTC's.

I have never applied to so many jobs and not receive a response. Follow up letters and phone calls have been made. references used. what else can I do? I need to start working. Any advice? I am truly beginning to believe, I just wasted away 30000 dollars and 5 yrs of school for nothing. I was so excited to become a nurse, something I have always wanted and finally had a chance at it. I thought nursing was different than your average positions. nurses are suppose to help each other, teach each other, and grow together, what happened? NJ nursing shortage? hospitals advertise they will take new nurses on their career sites, but they lie. All they want are experienced nurses. well guess what, when you fall short of staff in the few years the industry is predicting, all their will be are NEW NURSES! TRAIN THE NEW GRADS NOW AND START PREPARING FOR THE RETIREMENT LOSS NOW! I don't understand. Thanks for letting me vent. :)

I have never heard of any hospital near me having specific 'new grad orientation'. In some of the other forums, I came across various states that offer residency programs for new nurses, but definitely not NJ. Some friends of mine just got hired at Kimball Medical Center. Not my first choice, but apparently they are willing to take on a lot of new nurses. (I have had some not so nice experiences in that area and am choosing not to apply there). If anyone has more info of the orientations or residency programs, please let us know where to find them. Thank you. Christine

I too am a recent grad, associate degree. I started to apply after I knew I passed the NCLEX. Just like you, it seems I am the only one w/o a job! The local newspapers have not had anything for RN's. I have been using Monster.com, CareerBuilder and the hospital career sites. I have been told, the best thing to do, is follow up on your apps. Send a letter or call to find the status of the app. What county are you in? check out meridian health, saint barnabas health care system if you haven't already. Best of luck to you. Christine

Hi, I am a recent nursing grad in NJ. about 1/4 of my classmates also had 4 yr degree in another area of study. my best advice to you, would be to enter an associate program, then transfer directly to a BSN program. Most schools offer a 'bridge' program now. They also give you the option to test out of required courses. Check out the local hospitals, some offer training as a nursing assistant (CNA) or Patient Care Associate (PCA). That will give you training in patient care, phlebotomy for some, tuition reimbursment and the advantage of already working in the hospital. hope that helps. christine

The priority book and Kaplan, help you to focus on the steps of delegating & prioritizing, or answering the FIRST or MOST IMPORTANT questions by using Maslow and the ABC's. Physiological matters- resp, bleeding, nutrition, the things needed to live come first. after that it is pain, emotions etc. if there is a physiological need presented in an answer then any answer concerning pain, emotions would be thrown out.... as far as meds go, the only advice i have to offer is to become familar with the most common ones, such as avodart, cardizem or the ones with the narrow therapeutic range, such as digoxin. It is difficult to know each and every drug out there. i had a few I didn't know and some I did. I had a handful of meds, focusing on side effects, s/s of toxicity and location of injections. Both are good books, however, Kaplan spends more time on teaching you how to take the test, including multiple methods. After taking the nclex, I truly believe you can study as much information you want, it won't help. as long you know the basics of nursing, safety, infection control, med admin. etc. it's all about taking your time and figuring out what the hidden question is. (of course this is just my take on it :nuke:) christine

the Bratz book I thought was a good book to use, but not as your main source of studying. It focuses on exactly what the title says, prioritization, delegation and assisgnment. I used Kaplen along with it. My classmates also found Saunders to be really good as well. I took the Nclex yesterday. I am anxiously waiting for my results, hopefully tomorrow morning, I will find out. Christine

The Prioritization, Delegation & Assignment is a good book to practice 'test taking skills'. I felt it helped me to find my weak points as well as identify how I was reading the question and answers.

So, to answer my question with rounding, it is the same rule for pedi meds as it is for adults?

Hello, When answering a pedi math question on the NCLEX test, what is the correct way to round the number? for example, 87lbs = 39.5454 kg. Would rounding down to 39 be appropriate, to avoid giving too much? In school we were taught to round to the nearest hundredth with pediatrics, but friends who've taken the exam already, said NCLEX asks for whole numbers only. any input would be great, i posted this someplace else, but i'm not getting any replies. oh and I know how to round numbers, just curious if it's the same rule for peds. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you. I understand the basics of rounding, just wasn't sure if pediatrics would be an exception. Mainly because this group is more sensitive to medications. I appreciate the feedback.
