Man, you guys make nursing seem HORRIBLE! If I knew this before school...
You are not listening to anyone though. You just keep saying the same stuff about how negative this is. A nurse tells you what we are using this for and to take it for what it is worth, and to understand as a nurse with a stressful job we need a place to vent. It's better than in front of our managers, patients, or family patients. I can only assume and hope that your school is accredited enough to let you know, you will learn the ins and outs of nursing mentally, physically, and emotionally once you hit the floor as a RN.

"Okay so I'm tired of seeing these threads. I honestly believe that "vent" threads should be exclusive to nurses only. It seems that students don't comprehend that us nurses come on here to vent. Venting is a healthy way of relieving the every day stress that nurses go through and if someone is not a nurse there is no way they can understand it. I know students need to see the real world of nursing however, they need to go to their CI and professors to seek guidance and advice. On another note I used to a GNA, currently a LPN, soon to be RN, and plan to get BSN. I love nursing. If I didn't like it I wouldn't try so hard to pursue my education and career goals. Is bedside nursing for everyone? No. Guess what someone have to do it and sometimes we do things because we need to rather than having a choice. OP choose nursing at your own risk. If you can't handle the threads on this site then I don't know how you will survive in the "real world" of nursing. " Very well said

Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!! We all have great days. More than the bad days. This is where we get info and advice on the crap. We really do not need advice on how to make a patient smile, or to get a family member to tell you thank you. We all have the positive light within us. It's the politics of nursing we need to support one another in. You will get it...hopefully, otherwise you will be eaten alive.

I have been a nurse for almost two years. I work in a very high stress atmosphere, and I need a place to vent or to at least read other nurse's thoughts to know I am not alone. When you first start working you share all the craziness with your friends and family, and it honestly gets to the point where you realize no one gets it unless they are in the health field. You can never fully explain an entire insane 12 hour shift to your boyfriend/girlfriend when you get home. People outside of nursing cannot imagine the work we do. You start mentioning drugs and treatments to them and they have no idea what you are talking about. I guess it's nice when people just listen while you talk, but in the end I want someone who can actually understand what I am telling them and who can relate. This forum is the perfect place for all of the politics, venting, and questions us nurses can share with one another. You will soon see how stressful the job is. This forum I guess can be a little negative, but it's a safe house for us all and I think there is a mutual understanding and respect for everyone on here that may not be in the workplace. It is what you make it and if you do not want to get caught up in the madness then you may really want to consider another profession. It takes a strong, committed individual to dedicate their spirit and time to such an awesome career. Good luck on your journey.

Interested in moving to colorado
I work in a ltach in Thornton, but live in the, Baker District, I have lived all over Denver, and this is my favorite area, very central to everything including highways which is good because a lot of our areas take time to get to a highway. I believe they may be hiring new grads. It is insane and can be crazy, but it is great experience and I think you could do almost anything after working there. There are politics, major politics at times, so don't say i did not warn you if you do apply and get a job, haha. I started as a new grad at $26.00. Vibra.com is the facility

How do You Treat PRN/Agency Nurses and Why?
We use tons of agency. Like any other group of people, some are good and some are bad, but in any case they are people, so I treat them with respect. I actually feel sorry for them, because my place of work is pretty nuts, and unless you have done the charting a few times, it is overwhelming. I always feel bad asking them if they got an "end of shift report", ins, outs, abnormal vitals, FSBS, Prns, all have to be written out to give to the charge nurse at the end of the shift, on top of us already charting this stuff more than once for some of it. I can see them sometimes just want to cry. So I try to help as much as possible, but we get a lot of repeated agency too, which is nice.

Call light response time policy and procedure
I was walking with medications in hand. I was walking past a call light and our CEO who is in house, said "are you going to answer this call light?" I said "I have meds in my hand (mind you pain meds), this room is on isolation, do you think it would be right for me to gown up, and leave these meds sitting outside of the room?" (whether it was isolation or not I would never take someone else's meds into someone's room). Amazing.

Anyone else a Biker Nurse? ;)
I live in Colorado. Our weather is bi-polar. One day it's in the 70's and the next it's snowing. I just got it in the fall and it needs some work still, so I have been able to ride it anywhere but the neighborhood really (lame). I drive the highway to work so I will not be able to drive to work. It's a starter bike and I am new rider so once I get comfortable I will go big enough to ride the highway.

Toughen up, or quit?
We have lots of agency and some work out and some don't. My place of work is so crazy, the charting is insane (especially if you are not familiar with ours, plus we double even triple chart) and we can have up to 5-6 patients on a "hi-ops" unit, vents, trachs, chest tubes, tube feed, blood, iv meds and so much more. So i always try to help as much as I can, but we are so busy ourselves. This week I was reminded that agency nurses can not use our code for the glucometer (CNAS usually do FSBS, but the CNA was agency too and could not use our code either, so we had to do our own plus agencies FSBS), but they have a code to get into the med machine, are you kidding me? So I can understand your frustration. I know for a fact agency gets paid for working overtime. It seems like agencies are always hiring. I would look into another agency if I were you.

On the frontlines
It is pretty well known that this happens on a regular basis. She gets the patients and Corporate is happy. Don't get me wrong, my job is so rewarding. I am so lucky to care for these people, and I am honestly lucky to have gotten this job as a new grad, so I am thankful for my work in many ways, but I wish i could spend extra time with the patients, and I always can't. These people are so sick, and then sometimes even on comfort care, we are all over the board with patient conditions. The last couple of weeks have been extremely crazy so I think I just kind of vented in my post. I just want everyone to be safe and properly cared for as promised.

"The Code Blue Disturbed The Other Patients" - Shame on you bad nurses!
I have been in codes and the nurses and doctors have been vulgar, laughing and joking. I understand it can be tense and maybe this a coping mechanism, but I found it so repulsive. But the "noise" OH EM GEE! Get over it. Some of these patients seem to think they are at a 4 seasons hotel.

RN of 12 years passing meds in nursing home? S L O W..
You will get into the flow of things and figure out what could make things faster and safe. My first job was in a home and passing meds on around 30 people. It took me 4 hours my first few nights. I finally got into a flow and got the hang of who wanted what and how they took their pills compared to having to run out down the hall to get what juice they preferred and so on.

On the frontlines
I am so sorry to hear that, Sweetlikesugar. Our director is so nice to their faces it's repulsive and I wonder how she sleeps at night. She also throws us under the bus in a heartbeat. One day I had this patient who's family had been complaining of all kinds of things, which they had EVERY right to and the director went and talked to the patient (very rare for her to do, must have been some big time threatning going on) and I was in there to support the conversation to make the patient feel better and answer any questions. The director looked at me and said "have you not brushed her hair today?"..WTH?? I wanted to say, "no but I have cleaned her behind multiple times due to her c-diff along with my four other patients", mind you this is a hi-ops unit, with five patients. I said no and found her a brush and handed it to the director, and she softly brushed her hair trying to make the patient feel better. I wanted to scream and vomit all at once. "Thanks alot!!" They promise the families the world and I am sorry to anyone who has been lied to. I just hope the families understand that the nurses are not ignoring their loved ones and if we could all of their hair would be combed and they would heal and be clean and safe at all times. At these facilities, I am the nurse (we know how many duties are listed under this), the CNA, the RT, Pt, OT, advocate, and so on. the other day I got to give a patient a bed bath, lotion her and put a shampoo cap on her head (very rare moment and used my lunch break without thinking twice). She was so appreciative. I just love that part of nursing. *sigh*. I could go on and on and on. I think I need to look for another job.
