Talking to a CNM
Thank you to the midwives that shared their stories with us! I really appreciated that! I am currently a Frontier student with 1 out of 3 years completed. Before applying to school I found myself trying to do the same thing- get in touch with some CNMs about their education, work, and family experiences. I literally called offices and left phone messages stating the reason for my call or, better yet, emailed them directly when they had an email or "contact us" section of a practice website. I had a lot of email and call back responses and everyone was more than happy to answer questions and tell some stories. My advice is dont be shy and just ask away! Good luck!

Hard to stay interested in this forum once graduated
Hi All, I, like Goozgog, am finishing my 3rd Frontier term. I hadn't logged into the forum for a while but recently started checking back in. I have also felt a little disappointed with the lack of true midwifery related subject matter in the forum. Maybe it would help if some CNMs posted stories of their experiences, or we could post news articles etc related to midwifery or maternity care to get some conversations going. Just making some suggestions- we'll see, maybe we will all be motivated to start some interesting talks! :redbeathe

Aspiring CNM in L&D
Hi All, Im a critical care nurse starting CNM school in January. Lately, Ive been considering changing units to L&D for the experience. But the more I think about it the more I feel that I dont know that now is the time to juggle starting school, a completely different unit/orientation, and, as others have mentioned, frustrating situations where women are being intervened upon left and right. I think for now Im going to stay where I am, or move somewhere a little lighter (Like PACU- no weekends or holidays :) ) and just focus on my studies. I feel (mostly) confident that Ill still be a competent CNM with my critical care background, and maybe nicely wellrounded as another member put it. Just my thoughts/venting! :heartbeat

being a mom and a student
I can totally relate! I am faced with starting school this spring and am hoping to be pregnant by next fall (if all goes as planned). I am trying my best to adopt your fiance's attitude though and have to agree that there will probably never be a "perfect" time in life to do these things. I say go for starting your family and let life happen around that. Hope that helps!

The Patient I Failed
thanks for taking the time to so eloquently describe some of the emotions and nights that my colleagues and I work through in the ICU.

Is distance learning as effective?
I am looking into applying to different distance learning programs and was wondering if people feel they are prepared to practice upon graduation- or rather, if they are as prepared as they would be after attending a traditional program. I am looking into these schools that are distance learning: Frontier (which I hear is great) East Carolina Univ. Philadelphia Univ. Univ. of Cincinnati Anyone have info about them? Thanks!:heartbeat

how much experience needed to be CNM?
You don't know how glad I was to read your words... I went to NYU for my BSN too! What you were told was actually the reasoning that I had in my head- the same reasoning that was recently shot down! I guess its a matter of opinion. Thanks again!

how much experience needed to be CNM?
Thanks HeartsOpenWide. The school was saying they would let me in- but that it wasnt a good personal decision to go into midwifery with only my ICU experience. Thoughts everyone?

how much experience needed to be CNM?
Hello Everyone! Im new here and so far very thankful to have stumbled upon this site! Anyway, I have 2 years of experience in a busy MICU. For years though, my desire has been to become a midwife- and Ive decided that now is the time. I was told though by an admissions counselor that I would be accepted to the program but that it wasnt a smart idea to pursue midwifery without experience as an L&D RN. Because of my MICU experience I have great assessment skills. critical thinking, reaction time etc- but no time on L&D. I also thought that there were people who went into direct entry programs and end up ok. Can someone give me some feedback please?
