My God, these family members!!
Been spending some time going through these posts as I'm having some trouble dealing with demanding family members. Some good tips here...setting boundaries, good delegation. Here's a story that I would love some feedback on: I work on a busy med-surg unit that is oncology focused. We have a 1:5 ratio (usually) but on a particular weekend, 2 RNs called in sick, the NM took a vacation day and while we had 3 CNAs on the floor, 2 were doing 1:1 safety watches. This left 4 RNs and 1 CNA to care for 30 pts. Within 30 mins of eachother, we called 3 codes...everyone was scrambling. During this time, a pt's wife came to the nurse's station to say that her husband was on the commode and needed help getting back to bed. It was explained to her that staff was actively involved in SAVING PEOPLE'S LIVES and someone would be available to help her as soon as possible. She then proceeded to go from room to room looking for someone to help her finally arriving in the room where a CODE BLUE was in progress and stepped in between the RN doing chest compressions and the doctor ordering meds and DEMANDED that someone help her husband off the commode. Ok nurses.....is this the absolute worst you've ever seen or heard of? And how would you/your unit/your hospital have dealt with this?

Stony Brook U ABSN - Summer 2010 Applicants
The two year program is laid out a bit differently: Fall Year #1 Fundmanetals + cinicals Health Assessment Med Math Perspectives in Nursing Beginning of Patho (Nov) Spring Year #1 Community Nursing + clinicals Psych Nursing + clinicals Nutrition End of path (end April) Fall Year #2 Pediatrics/OB Research Pharm starts Nov Spring Year #3 Adult Health Pharm continues until April Ethical, Management Principals There is a class, Health Care Policy, that I am not sure when the 2 yrs fit it in. Don't worry - its a 1 credit joke. Classes generally start at 9 (rare exception 8) and go until ??? I know the 2 yrs had a lot of down time whereas we rushed from class to class. For example, in the fall, we had OB from 9-12 with the 2 yrs. Then, we went to psych from 1-4 and the 2 yrs had nothing. We all met back up for research at 4 until 6.

Stony Brook accelerated BSN - Summer 2010 start
For me, it was PHARM! That is one tough class!!! I think a lot of people in my class would agree. People who had never gotten any less than a B+ in anything were failing exams.

Stony Brook U ABSN - Summer 2010 Applicants
I'm in the one year program right now.... Some hope for readers who are alternates: a classmate of ours was called on the afternoon of Day 1 of orientation to come in! And, the president of our class who has a 4.0 was an alternate!!! The uniform is white pants and a white hip length jacket with pastel colored polo shirts and white nurse shoes. You'll wear this for most clinicals. The only difference is that for psych, you wear business casual with your white lab coat and for the L&D part of OB, you wear surgical scrubs.

Yeah, we had about a week - 10 days off. I just looked at my planner. We finished summer 8/20 and started fall on 8/31.

Stony Brook accelerated BSN - Summer 2010 start
Hi all, I'm in the accelerated program right now...started in June 2009, graduating soon! I'd be happy to answer any questions but to answer the common question....the schedule is intense; you are in class and/or clinicals at least 5 days a week and it is recommended that you do not work. Some people in my class have worked but waitressing one night a week...stuff like that. Not one person holds a full time job.

Stony Brook One Year Accelerated Program...exactly what does it entail?
I think we are all starting to get frustrated with the lack of information, especially those of us with children who need to arrange for child care, etc. Let's all stick together and share whatever information we do get and maybe we can piece it all together!
