Code Blue!
There are 2 rules to a code. 1) You are NOT the one dying! 2) If the patient does not make it,you did NOT hurt them because they are already dead. A few years ago, on Christmas morning, a woman called in and said she was bring her husband having chestpain. On arrival he was quite ashened and nauseated. Did my assessment, put on the monitor & O2, have IV assess. The day nurse chart my assessment and I could go home(I worked 11p to 7a). The patient went into V-tach. We cardioverted him twice before being lifeflighted to a larger hospital with a cath lab. He is still alive to this day. He and his wife celebrated their 50th anniversary earlier this year. True story.

- pin ?
My dad was not overly thrilled I was going to LPN school. But during my RN program, he paid for my school pin. Granted, I only wore it for a short time. I still have it. Like the others have mentioned, the decision is yours. I am proud of to have to have my pin.- Pearls of Wisdom for new CNAs
I thank all who contributed to my for plea. I am still in search of some more pearls of wisdom. I teach CNA course at a local VO-Tech school. Majority of my student are adult learners. I am wanting some advice and or stress certain concepts that new should know prior to entering the "real" world. All responses are much appreciated. Thank you in advance.- How many of you had a different career/education before becoming an RN?
i worked in fast food/ convenient store type environment. i started out as an aide in a ltc facility. got my certification. i went on to medication tech. the only way i could better myself, was to go to lpn school. that i did. i worked 3+ years as an lpn bridged into a.s. program. i've been an rn for 9 years. this whole time,i was married and had children. no savings to draw from to keep the bills paid. i worked all the time. studied when i could. slept very little. all of it has been worth it. i wished i would have started out this way.now i work in a hospital setting. i also teach a cna course at a local vo-tech school. i am well pleased how far i've come and the possibilities are endless. be well. do good work and keep in touch. Thanks for your reply. I've tried to impree upon them how valuable they are to the residents and charge nurses. Ysadl- What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?
Once, we had mom and her three kids come to ED per ambulance. The family car would not start. Each child a cold symptoms. You know the classics signs, cough, sore throat, and headache. All this took place after clinics closed for the day. Then the doctor after discharging them, asked if we could find transportation home. I work in a rather small rural hospital. It was a cold and snowy evening. One of our Chaplins took them home. Mind you, this chaplin did this on his own. Home was 20 miles one way. And thats the truth!- Pearls of wisdom needed
i teach a cna course at a local vo-tech school. most of my students are adult learners. most to all of them are are high school drop outs or ged grads. i've thought about creating a booklet containing "pearls of wisdom". the content i'm looking for is ideas or concepts that new cna working for the first time should know other than what comes from class. or maybe re-enforcing a basic skill that should be practiced continually. i am hoping someone(s) out there in the cyber world could share some of your wisdom. i want my students to succeed and their employers to continue to use our school for the classes. thanks in advance for your suggestions. ysadli sure there are more helpful hints you wish your new cna's could / need to know. tanks in advance. ysadl- 5 things a new RN must have...
