Texas CRNA Applicants Fall 2009
I applied for both as well, but am hoping for the Denver sites at TWU. Also applied for three other schools (Newman, BryanLGH, and Mount Marty). Have not heard anything form any of these schools yet, but the deadlines are in November and December. "Trying" not to obsess about it too much at this point!! :nuke:

Flight nursing with OB specialty
Our program uses a 2 RN configuration, and we do have HROB nurses on our team that do our OB transports. They also are sent through a critical care class and have to complete EMS time and OR time to obtain intubations so they can also work along the primary nurses on some of their calls. A lot to do, and they are great at it.

Best Route to Become a CRNA
Don't completely discount the ED experience. Maybe get a little PRN experience there along the way as well. While the ICU experience is definitely the gold standard and invaluable, adding some ED experience just makes you that much more well rounded. The "never know what will walk in the door" experience is valuable as well. Keeps you on your toes! You may also (on occasion) have an ICU patient that is stuck in the ED without an inpatient bed. Being an experienced ICU nurse in the ED makes YOU invaluable.

Intubation Difficulties
Cricoid manipulation a HUGE asset!! Try putting an assistant's hand on the cricoid cartilage first, then yours on top of theirs. Manipulate the cricoid cartilage until you get a decent look at the cords (still may not be a great look), then make sure your assistant knows not to move their hand from that spot (or you'll break their neck and they'll need intubation). Take your hand off of theirs and pass the tube. I've had this help on a number of occasions.
