Regular RN scope of practice in the OR
I would presume that the hospital has a credentialing process through the medical staffing office. Do you have priviledges at that facility to "practice"? Was the patient informed of your observations even after the fact?

Periop RN marketability
As an OR educator, I highly recommend working as a floor nurse before specializing in anything. I believe that you should learn basics, organization, prioritizing, critical thinking, etc before going to the OR. I notice a difference between new grads and experienced nurses that orient to the OR. It can increase your marketability. I did 18 months of med-surg before I went to the OR and it was the best thing I did. Best of luck to you in all you do!

Axillary rolls
Do any of you have access to any evidence-based practice of wrapping an axillary roll in a towel? I was taught not to place any material over a gel roll as for it defeats the purpose. I would appreciate any information. Thank you!

Hospital vs. home laundered scrubs and caps
I need your opinion regarding scrubs. Does your facility provide scrubs or do you have your own personal scrubs? Also, are you allowed to wear your personal caps or the provided bonnets? If your facility allows caps, must they be covered with a bonnet? Any feedback would be helpful. Thank you!

What kind of interview questions might they ask?
There are some great websites that have sample questions for the interviewer. Just google, "interview questions." You may get the usual, "Tell us about your past employment... Where do you see yourself in 5 years. Blah, blah, blah. Also depending on the facility, they may have an interview system that utilizes behavioral (sp) type questions. Examples: Tell me about how you created a safety policy, how you utilized it and what was the outcome. Give an example of a confrontation between you and a co-worker, how was the problem solved? These types of questions want you to tell a story. It shows how you can think on your feet and problem solve. This type of scenarios work well for our facility as for we can tell if we want them after asking only two questions. Best of luck!

Does your OR have an educator?
Wow, some of you are really slamming the OR educator! I am an OR educator for a large OR. Yes, I do hang the signs and make sure the staff get their stuff done, but I give breaks, lunches and I even circulate for a full day. The job is demanding as for I have to be updated on the latest and have do quite a bit of research. It is a tough job, but I enjoy it immensely. I am sorry that a lot of you feel that way about your educator.

Brand New OR Nurse - Any Advice?
The first week of orientation, we send the new nurses to central processing to put sets together and learn about sterilization. This has proved to be extremely helpful as for they learn some instruments and how the sterilization process occurs. After that we set them with a preceptor and spend six months with them. You should be evaluated everyday. Come prepared everyday with objectives as for that helps your preceptor. It is an exhausting orientation, but welcome aboard you will love it.

Preceptor pay for scrub techs
I am trying to get preceptor pay for our scrub techs. Currently only the OR RNs get preceptor pay. I can't do my job without my scrub and what is fair is fair. If you could please respond, post what hospital and/or city you know what is true. I would greatly appreciate it. Shaomai RN
