  1. On my days off i try to read, exercise and clean the house and when I get home after a stressful 12hour shift I may put on some music to try and settle down. When i get home I try not to think about or talk about work. Before i go back to work, I pray in the parking lot before I walk through the door.
  2. on our unit we have a lady that was a RN in another county, when she came to america she was not able to pass her boards after taking them 4 times, Our hospital allows her to take off MD orders even though she currently still does not have a license
  3. Did you work while you were in nursing school and if so how many hours a week did you work?
  4. When my nursing supervisor interupts me during a med pass just to get me to sign some paperwork that could wait until im finished passing meds. Hello! That is not important!
  5. i have really thought about leaving the job and just getting another one working the weekends but my daycare bill alone is $600 a month, so i thought about waiting to September 2010 when my son starts school so that i dont have to worry about my daycare bill, but the other part of me wants to just go ahead aand start school this year, i think im going to talk to my DON one more time and if She still says NO, then i have a big decision to make
  6. I am a LPN and i been at my job, which i enjoy very much for over a year. When they hired me they stated that they encourage nurses to go back to school and will work with people schedules if they decide to do so. Well I talked to my DON last month and I told her that I would be starting school in August full time and I may go to summer school in May. So I asked her if I could work every Friday, Saturday and Sunday as a float nurse. She told me no because they will not be able to pay me float pay (which would be an increase in about $8). I told the DON that they didnt have to pay me float pay but i need to work that schedule so i could finish school. She again told me NO. So i asked her what was the problem because they are alowing other nurses to go to school. She told me that "to many people are going to school" I am upset that my job wont work with my schedule. I would just go get a different job but due to our economy i dont think that would be a good idea. I only have 13 months left in a BSN nursing program and I dont understand why I have to choose between my job or nursing school. At this point im just undecided on what to do.
  7. hey, im going to go to the campus in chesapeake
  8. well i went over today and took the preadmission test, it took me about a hour and a half to complete but they told me after i was done with the test that i would have to take a logic class before they will let me into the program
  9. I applied for Sentara August 09 also but have to take my preadmission test in a few days before I hear anything from them about being accepted
  10. There are other smokers on the unit and they are usally gone no more than ten minutes no matter how many cigarette breaks they take, but for anyone to be gone off the unit for 45 mins (cigarette break or not) is a little unsafe especially if they do it 5 or 6 times in a shift
  11. im actually going to bring up the issue on monday to the unit manager because the other nurses on the floor feel the same way but I dont think they want to say anything
  12. The unit manager did speak to the nurse about her cigarette breaks a few months ago and the only change that we noticed is that when she leaves the floor she will tell the charge nurse that she is going for her break, before she would just be gone from the floor and knowbody knew where she was at
  13. There is nothing wrong with taking breaks and everyone needs them, but we still have a job to do
  14. I work on a very busy vent/trach unit with parayzed patients. There are about 4 nurses, 2 or 3 CNAs and 30 patients. I have nothing wrong with people taking cigarette breaks but we have this one nurse that takes about 4 or 5 cigarette breaks in a 12 hour shift. Each cig break she is gone off the floor about 45 mins and still has the nerve to take a 45 min lunch break. We are allowed two 15 minute break and one 30 minute lunch break. I barley get those two breaks and I dont think its fair that I have to look after that nurses patients when she is gone on one of her breaks. If I dont answer her call lights then the patient is not being attened to. The other nurses notice her behavior also. The charge nurse is aware of the situation and is always asking where that nurse is. So i tell the charge nurse that she is off the floor on her break. The charge nurse and this nurse are friends. So the charge Nurse always tells me to go see what her patient is ringing for. When I tell her no then they say that im not being a team player. Im busy taking care of my own patients and i get behind on my work when i have to pick up somebody elses slack. Im just really annoyed and just wanted to VENT!
  15. Well thanks for the info because that is basically what i wanted to know, i will try and contact a representative again. :wink2:
  16. well good luck
  17. Well I know a few people that went to the VA beach campus and they said it was a good school, but when i went to go get more information about there RN program, I didnt get any help, I understand that they are very busy but they should be a little more helpful to prospective students, I will try and talk to someone again next week but if i have the same experience then i will start looking into other schools
  18. Well i hope that you have better luck than i did because i went over there to talk to a representative yesterday. I had an appointment at 1pm. At 140 pm i was still waiting there waiting to speak with someone sence it was my first time there. I got up and told the receptionist that i have been waiting to talk to my representative and that people that have came after me have already been seen by the representative that i was supposed to see. The receptionist stated that the representative would not be that long with the other people. I asked her could I seen someone else and the receptionnist told me that if i wanted to see someone else then i would have to refill out the application. I had already filled out one application and didnt understand why i would have to fill out another one to speak with a different representative. i sat down and waited another twenty minutes and finally i just got up and left. So i sat over ther for over an hour and did not get any of my questions answered.
  19. The Hospitality aides are a very big help because they also stock all the gloves in the patients rooms and they also pack and unpack patients belongings. Of course the CNAs and Nurses can do everything that the hospitality aide does but it is a big relief to have them around when the CNA and Nurses are very busy.
  20. I work on a vent/trach unit and our CNAs do baths, weights, vital signs, feeding, and I & Os. We also have a hospitality aide that helps with feedings, passes ice, and makes beds. When we do not have a hospitality aide for the day then the CNAs pick up her duties.
  21. Im going to talk to MCI today about starting their RN program. I been a LPN for about 1 and a half years so part of me is excited and the other part is anxious. Anybody else felt this way when they started school?
  22. In nursing school i was fine, but since i have been a nurse i have had problems with loss of sleep, headaches, backaches and sometimes chest pains. I have only been a nurse 14 months but sometimes the hardest thing for me to do is to take time out of my schedule to take care of myself.
  23. The houskeeping at my facility is pretty good but alot of staff has noticed that the "clean" linen does not look clean. I have pulled clean linen off the linen carts myself and i have observed large stains on the sheets and pillowcases. I am embarrased when I bring clean linen into the room and open it up just to find stains all on the linen. I havent had this problem at other facilities.
  24. I just started in June but i took information literature already and now im enrolled in the health saftey exam, i have 6 or 7 more exams to take before I can take the FCC
  25. Ok, I am confused, i am a LPN in VA and i just started excelsior two months ago, im starting essen of nursing: health saftey this week, so what does it mean for me and what do i have to do to meet the 500 clinical hours
