  1. Good point. I agree with you. I suppose I just got caught up with what in my head became an "either - or" situation---making the CNA feel important vs. saving a life. And it's not, you can be respectful, while still making it about the patient.
  2. I believe certain users need a debriefing on Maslow's hierarchy. Physical needs come before psychosocial, people! If a CNA is arguing with me about something of considerably less significance, while I'm trying to save a patient's life, darn right I'm going to kick him to the curb. Priorities, people! If I'm trying to resuscitate a patient, either assist me or stay out of my way.
  3. Thank you so much for letting us know!
  4. Thank you for your response. My opinion of you now stands stronger than before.
  5. You remind me of a someone I know. This husband was cheating on his wife, and the wife's friend witnessed it. The friend tried to tell the wife about what she saw, but the wife became angry and refused to believe that her husband would be capable of cheating. The wife then accused the friend of being "jealous of her good marriage." Five years later the wife finally caught her husband with another woman. You are that wife. Before you get into nursing school, try to learn the difference between negativity and reality.
  6. You hit the nail on the head. Many thanks!
  7. Great points! I think that the U.S Dept of Education could have awarded the grant to cheaper school. Argghh.
  8. Rays of sunshine are quite welcome! Cheers!
  9. "A negative attitude will not take you anywhere. I can't understand why someone with this outlook would even go into nursing." That's about as close as you can get to telling me I'm in the wrong field. I don't think I was clear enough for you. Your opinion will be far more valuable to me once you have gotten a few semesters of nursing school under your belt.
  10. Oh goodness gracious, you haven't even begun nursing school yet, and here you are trying to tell me I've chosen the wrong field. Two years from now, I'd like to hear an updated response from you. Mmmmmm kay? kay.
  11. Where in Texas are you located? You can believe what you want, but many qualified graduates (yes even those with positive attitudes) are not finding jobs. A positive attitude only takes you so far.
  12. Yep, I'm aware of this. My primary point of this thread was to draw attention to the fact that Houston is getting another nursing school (something we absolutely do not need). I wonder what type of student will be attracted to U of St. Thomas? Probably one that cannot get into the cheaper UT, TWU, UTMB and Prairie VIew schools (heck even HBU is cheaper.)
  13. Why??? Because I genuinely care about these future nursing students. My program is free. How common is that? Not very. Sure pursue it if you have the time and money---to not be guaranteed a job at graduation. I'm telling you all of this based on all of the students that graduated in December.
  14. "How about some suggestions on how to get your foot in the door, such as volunteering while still in school or working part-time in whatever capacity you can." Because I don't think these options are going to solve the problem. You pitying me.... Is that not condescending as well? "So then all these feelings are just your projections onto the rest of us" What does this mean? Please translate.
  15. For now, no, I don't plan on dropping out. First of all, I'm almost finished. Second, it's free--I received a full paid scholarship. Did you not find Mom/Nurse's comment, " I really don't appreciate people coming onto the student boards and saying this crap. Why not just go to a high school and tell all the graduating seniors to not even think of college cause jobs are just too hard to get?!" condescending as well? I mean apparently because people don't want to hear the truth, I'm all of a sudden this "Negative Nancy" that should be thrown over the cliff.
  16. I think what Crunch was saying that you think I have an alterior motive here for discouraging people. It did come across that way.
  17. I realize you didn't ask me to apologize. You did however make me feel that what I wrote was "negative" to future nursing students, which in itself is a wrong. I usually apologize for wrongs I commit, but here, I don't feel like I've wronged anyone.
  18. Your assumptions are quite wrong. I definitely did create this thread to warn people. I still have two semesters left. I have not started to look--- I'm sharing with you what recent BSN graduates are dealing with at my school. I think you dislike my "approach" because it makes you feel lowly about yourself. You put in all of this hard work, only to hear that the result of your hard work may come to nothing. I know this sucks, which is why I want to warn others before getting in way over their heads. What approach would you suggest, while still getting the message across? My guess is that you would prefer not to hear it all.
  19. Wow I'd love to see done too! I wonder how we could initiate this sort of study.
  20. I'm sooo busted! LOL!!! :redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe
  21. I won't apologize for giving you a realistic view of the job market. If they come across as too negative for you, then maybe you should blissfully ignore these threads. Your friends that all found jobs---were they BSN holders? And sorry, but it's not all job sectors that are doing poorly. Gas pipeline companies are doing great. It's wonderful for engineers here in Houston. Accountants are doing well. P.A.'s are still doing great. So are M.Ds. Another concern is that all of the states that are doing worse than ours, well guess where their graduate nurses are headed??? Texas.
  22. Nobody thinks that anymore?? Seriously? Have you seen the TV commercials touting the "nursing shortage?" What about the news articles? Every 1-2 months Yahoo Careers posts the top ten careers in this economy. Nurses always make it. http://blogs.chron.com/medblog/archives/2010/07/post_16.html http://blogs.chron.com/galveston/2010/07/47_million_grant_targets_utmb.html Try googling "Nursing shortage." And while you're at it, wait a semester, and apply to a BSN program. Your chances at finding a job will be higher.
  23. I would rather they know now rather than later. You and others who would prefer to blissfully ignore the reality of the "nursing shortage," can also take a blind eye to my thread. You want my advice? (although it really doesn't sound like you do) In the very least, attend only BSN programs, or simply reconsider nursing as a whole. If you want to stay in the medical field become a Physical therapist or physician's assistant. Have you been through nursing school yet? It makes your prereqs look like kindergarten. That in combination with the tuition money you spend should make you wonder if it's really worth it, when you're struggling to find a job a year after graduation. You can't say you haven't been warned.
  24. You are so right! Can you believe Houston is getting another BSN nursing school? University of St. Thomas is reopening their nursing program (from the 50s). For a mere $832 PER HOUR, "you too can be a nurse!"
