  1. Marijuana is a powerful mind altering drug. If a person suspects a nurse or nursing student using a mind altering drug, they should report it immediatly. Nursing students know that they can be subjected to a urine drug screen at anytime.
  2. Did you know that when a person smells poop they are ingesting very small poop particles. Sometimes when I work on a Geriatric psych unit, i get calls from a general psych unit to help them clean up poop. Like I'm a poop expert. Nobody likes cleaning up poop. One nice thing about being an RN is that sometimes you can deligate poop clean up to your subordinates. I tell my subordinates that poop always runs down hill. Like everything in nursing, things get better with more experience.
  3. I can still remember 16 years ago when I was a new nurse. I thought that I had experienced most of the stress by getting through nursing school and passing boards. My first job was on a med surg floor. When i was hired, I was told that I would be with a preceptor for my first 4 months. However, after a couple months, the census went up and they were short of nurses. So the management said I was doing fine and put me out on a unit by myself with 8 very ill patients. I should of said no but I didn't. I ended up experiencing the most stress I have ever felt in my life. I made a couple big mistakes that I had trouble coping with and I was way over my head. Alot of the other nurses were not very kind towards me. I had never quit a job unless I had another job waiting. I had a wife and a new baby and was the sole financial support for my family. Regardless, I quit this job with only one days notice. I learned something from this experience. 1. nursing school does not really prepare you for being a real nurse. 2. Don't ever allow yourself to be over your head because both you and your patients will suffer. 3. Don't beat yourself up if you fail at first.
  4. I have worked with only men on a psych unit before and I find that women and men together maintain a safe environment better. Sometimes pt's respond better to someone that is less intimidating.
  5. Where you given a choice or encouraged to press assault charges against the patient. When it comes to assault even patients need to be held responsible. Did the patient show any nonverbal cues that she may become violent. Your facility should investigate this incident and the charge nurse should be held accountable for his poor judgement, and apathy.
  6. Remember that your skills would probably be appreciated more somewhere else. I've had a supervisor in the past who had her favorites. Sometimes she empowered certain staff to become informants (creating a self righteous alliance). This kind of work environment can cause alot of anxiety. Not all work environments are unhealthy. Find a job elsewhere that is healthy and rewarding.
  7. Struggling with depression and anxiety can be difficult. Last year I studied for my Psychiatric nursing certification exam. I already knew alot about psychiatric nursing because I have practiced psychiatric nursing for 12 years. However, I did learn some things besides theory, medication and human development etc. I tried to begin by thinking that every human behavior has meaning. Anxiety is caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. When we are faced with a threat to our physical well-being we experience increased anxiety. I still struggle with anxiety. I began thinking about the times in my life when I have experienced anxiety attacks. Problems in relationships, financial difficulties, and problems at school or work were my major stressors. Today, I try to keep things fairly simple and stable. Fortunatly, I have a loving fiance and I have resolved alot of problems related to a previous divorce.
