  1. Hey there I was in your situation a few months ago trying to get a job in the med center as a GN. I interviewed with several hospitals and some of them told me I was ineligble for hire because I didn't have a BSN, that was surprising to hear, I figured being a GN all the hospitals would want to hire me-WRONG:no: I am currently in the GN internship over at Ben Taub. They give you 12 wks for all areas, except L&D, where you get 16 wks. I like working for Ben Taub because there is so much to learn, it's just so fast paced, kinda too fast paced for me:chuckle If you want to learn the ER or ICU, you can't go wrong at our hospital. You will see it all. They are supposed to start calling the next bunch of interns at the end of this month. Starting pay over at our hospital is $26.65 plus shift diff. So keep in contact with HR to let them know your interested and I wish you the best. Good luck!
  2. Hello. Yes all the hospitals in San Antonio hire new grads with no experience. You can pretty much apply to work any unit. Depending on what specialty you go into, generally orientation for new grad's are about 12-16 wks long. Most new RN's in San Antonio start off between $19-$21/hr. You may work for them using your GN permit while waiting to take your N-CLEX. If you have any specific questions let me know, I just moved from San Antonio last month. Good Luck in your job search.
  3. Lets see where I begin, I have not worked for Methodist personally but I am a former Baptist employee. Baptist to me was overall a great hospital. I started off as an LVN working med-surg over at North Central. The hospital itself is nice and all fixed up for the pt's, your co-workers are pretty helpful over there. Our pt ratio was 6:1, sometimes if we were really short staffed (which was a lot) it would be 7:1. I would sometimes work telemetry where the ratio is 5:1. They are always busy. I think they start GVN's off at around $16,they also offer what they call option-N meaning you can work for no benefits for a higher pay, night diff for LVN is $1.50 and $2 for weekends. You can work all the overtime you want and get bonuses for picking up extra shifts. The bad part is (I dont know if anything's changed because I worked for them over a year and a half ago) the hospital is staffed with a LOT of agency nurses, I am NOT saying anything bad about agency because I work agency to but what I mean is that agency nurses(with the exception if they signed a contract) don't have access to the computer for orders so with the constant admissions coming in, we were to all take turns getting admissions and when the agency nurses got admissions, they could not put any of the orders in the computer so you as a regular staff would have to do your admission work AND theirs, that initself can be overwhelming. I would always be so busy trying to catch up on my own work and would have to stop to get in the computer because they needed to know lab values, get xray results and so on. I worked the night shift and would get out sometimes at 9 in the morning instead of 7. I was going to quit to go work for Methodist but instead transferred to another Baptist-St. Luke's and LOVED it there. They are busy to but rarely rely on outside help. Like I said, North Central might be different now, go ahead and give them a try, you can always transfer to another unit or another Baptist (they have 5 facilities) after just 6 months. Sorry this was so long but hope it helps. Good Luck.
  4. Favorite Nurses is definetley one of the best. I started working for them when I was an LVN. They are great, pay well and have lots of assignments to pick from.
  5. Geez, after coming back from Houston this weekend, I didn't realize it had that many hospitals. There were hospitals I didn't even know about. Anyways, I have interviewed with Bayshore in Pasadena, Ben Taub, and a phone interview Woman's Hospital and St. Joseph's. I am supposed to interview with Texas Children's either this week or next week. I really want to work NICU as my first choice but will take L&D also. Those two areas are where I want to be. All are offering NICU positions except Ben Taub, they claimed they couln't have GN's in the NICU "at this time" but are taking GN's in L&D so I interviewed for that position. They all semed like great hospitals and all pay way better than what I am being offered here in San Antonio. I won't move unless I know for sure I have a job lined up.
  6. Hi, am originally from Torrance California, moved to Texas in 1990. Became an LVN in Austin in 2004. Currently living in San Antonio working in med-surg. Just graduated from SAC and am a GN now. Am planning to move to Houston to work in L&D or NICU.
  7. Hi. As far as the pay goes the agency pay is accurate, the pay for the hospital employees is about the same for a non-benefited position, most RN's I know working here in S.A. make less than what you mentioned, but most have less experience than you. As for Santa Rosa, although I have never worked there, I did do clinicals for OB and Peds there. The OB area was great and staff was helpful, but I did not like the pediatric area at all, the staff was not student friendly at all and it seemed chaotic and disorganized to me. The ER there is extremely busy and Med-Surg was also. As for location, the I-10 Boerne area is real nice, that would be an ideal location to live but it is pricey. The Methodist hospital hospital in Boerne has been built and I believe it opens up in Jan 2008. Hope this helps. Good luck in your move.
  8. Hi everyone. I just graduated school and will be moving to Houston from San Antonio in the next month. I have several GN internship interviews this week and next week. I was wondering what hospitals do you feel is a good place to work, including work conditions, pay, benefits, etc? Also, have any of you GN's already been hired for a job? I understand it's pretty competitive for a GN slot in Houston. Any advice would be truly appreciated. Thanks
  9. Hi, Here in San Antonio, the 4 LVN schools that I know of are The Baptist school of nursing, St Phillips, Galen and Texas Careers, as mentioned in the previous post, check with the BNE for the approved schools & nclex pass rates.
