I work in an ambulatory care setting to which we frequently flush ports. Our policy is to flush every four weeks to maintain the line. We also use use lidocaine before port access, although we do have one lady who said her former doctor used a numbing spray, so of coorifice she is not to pleased with the lidocaine injection.

Can anyone tell me about their experience with Clinical One? Thanks in advance. :spin:

I worked one year med/surg right out of school and like you, was stressed most of the time, even though I loved it at the same time. I was pulled to ER six months after graduating with no preceptorship ( very small Wyo. hospital) and was still expected to take on at least three patients on the floor. That was fine unless it was a busy ER day and then I wouldnt see my patients until noon. When they tried to add OB on top of that I began traveling and ended up in ambulatory care. No stress, wonderful staff, but after a year I am starting to get bored a little and so not want to lose the skills I have learned.

I totally thought it was a last ditch drug for MS and now realize what an awesome drug this is turning out to be for these patients. We are a very small hospital and have only one patient currently scheduled to receive this drug, but I really hope word gets around to our docs about how promising this can be. Has anyone given Tysabri. Its IV and used as a last resort in MS cases. This is a new drug in our facility and a representative is flying in to discuss the drug with us. Just wondering if anyone has had issues with it or not. Thanks so much. WyoRN3

You need a new agency and fast. I can not believe you're not getting time and a half.

I started nursing school when I was forty. My very first paper back I received an F. I almsost quit then and there. I am now forty four, have been a nurse now two and a half years and absolutely love it, even though I've lived through some horror stories. I was only six months out of school when I became charge nurse for the day shift and had to work ER with my only back up being the DON who had a cell phone I could call if I needed help. Well that was basically everytime someone walked through the door. Survived that and began taking OB call, but with the hospital being rural and no docs in the facility after five (they were on call with all four docs living over seven miles out of town) I decided I didn't want to risk losing my license and began working surgical services thirty miles away. Way less stress and I love it. I say go for it. You will not regret it.

When I was working Med/surg I had no practice at all as most IV's were already in when I arrived and I was horrible when I did need to start one. I now work in same day surgery and can start as many as eight a day. I still have hit or miss days, will generally not try again after two attempts, as there are other nurses available, and can usually get at least 95%. I would fellow employees know you are needing some practice, because thats what it takes, and offer to start their IV's if time allows. Also, our anesthetist has provided many helpful suggestions such as using BP cuffs on elderly, using warm packs before hand, etc. Don't get to discouraged, but do try to get as much experience as you can. Our lab allows us to assist with blood draws which is very helpful,too.

My friend and I took ours at the same time 3 years ago. Ours both shut off at 75. She failed, I passed. She took hers the second time and passed. Main thing is read the question all the way through, take your time, and know you do get more than one chance. You will be fine, I'm sure. I don't know of anyone who has never passed.

I also work in Worland. I have been an RN for 3 years. Wyoming born and raised and love it.

The previous hospital I worked at sounds exactly like that. One nurse, one CNA on night shift were two of the rudest people I've met in my life. They had complaints from patients as well as staff, yet management would never fire them. They actually sent one to anger management, did no good. I was told over and over that the next time the were written up that they would be let go. Five incidents later, I left for another hospital as it was apparent who ran the show there.
