Moving to UNCH
Hi! I'm a nurse here in UK and will be moving soon (hopefully in October) to University of North Carolina Hospital. I am just wondering if anyone out there will be able to give some advice/idea on best place to get an apartment in and around Chapel Hill. Any other advice/tips regarding UNCH/North Carolina, apart from a place to get an apartment are most welcome.:)

Critical Care Course
Yeah, it seems that there are a gazillion topics to write about but I've found out that the topics I'm interested in like effects of nutrition in intensive care patients, CVVH, organ donation, withdrawal of treatment, and therapeutic hypothermia are also what many people in our course group are doing. I'm hoping for ideas for topics that are interesting but not as popular as the other topics I've mentioned. I've also thought about Lactate in sepsis but I was advised not to do it as it's very extensive topic to cover.

Critical Care Course
Hi there! I've just started doing a critical care course this week and I would like to ask for some suggestions for topics to write. I need 5 topics for my learning contracts and I have to choose 2 topics from those 5 to do an extended learning. I would like to get as many ideas/topics to choose from. I would appreciate all your suggestions. Cheers!

Hi to everyone, I just received a mail from UPHS today telling me that they are now going to withdraw their offer of employment to me:cry: as they are now unable to expand their international nursing program due to the current economic crisis in the US. They said they are now even unable to place their new graduates from the University of Pennsylvania school of nursing and has now limited expansion plans over the next few years. they have now ended their contract with the agency here in UK. Does anyone here can give me a name of agencies still offering jobs to US?

Tips for Repositioning & Bathing Pts!
I can't believe it's still like that in America. I've always thought that whatever we have here in UK when it comes to patient equipments/facilities, you guys have it better in U.S. Apart from not doing any lifting on patients, we're also taught here not to move patients i.e. sliding patients up the bed, without using any proper moving and handling equipment such as sliding sheets because if our back gets injured while doing such task, the hospital is not going to be held liable for the injury. The hospital is also not even going to give us paid sick leave which can be up to six months full pay.

Tips for Repositioning & Bathing Pts!
Pardon my ignorance, but when you guys mentioned draw sheet, did you mean sliding sheets? I work here in U.K. and we doesn't use draw sheets anymore for several years now. we instead have different types of sliding sheets or glide sheets that help to easily facilitate the moving and handling of patients. Also we're taught not to do any lifting on patients.

hi suzanne4, i just want to ask you if i still have to check with NVC re: visa availability like what everybody else is doing or just wait for the embassy to contact me. i was just wondering why those people with PD dates earlier or later than mine gets response from NVC like "no visa available yet" but then when i tried to contact them the automated response says they don't have any record of my file? i've been to embassy last year but unable to obtain visa because i lack NBI and told me i just have to send it next time visas are available. why don't they have any record of my file? is it because they've already forwarded it to the embassy?

Hi there! congratulations to all those whose PD dates are now current. By the way i would like to ask how long is the validity of the medical? I had mine in June last year. I'm hoping that my PD will be current by next month and I just want to know if I'll have to do it all over again... just in case......also my friend had a son born this year. He missed his visa last year 'coz he lacked one document. he's wondering what he'll need document wise regarding his newborn son. he phoned his agency and they also doesn't know. He's PD is now current (Nov 05)and is just awaiting to hear from embassy.

Can the hospital sponsor a nurse educator on H1B?
thanks for all the reply. i'm going to UPHS as a staff nurse and not as a specialist nurse or something. i've changed my mind now. i'll just wait for my immigrant visa and phone my agency today that i'm not going ahead with the H1B. i'm quite ok here in uk for now anyway.

Can the hospital sponsor a nurse educator on H1B?
Hi suzanne. I'm still confused. why would University of Pennsylvania Health System offer to apply H1B visas for their applicants who are still waiting for immigrant visa, if H1bs are not legal for nurses like me. they're a big institution and has a good reputation for them to hire nurses illegally. I went for embassy interview last year but missed getting a visa because my police clearance came too late. UPHS said that it could be another 3-5 yrs before retrogression will be lifted that's why they're offering to apply applicants like me for H1B if we want to while awaiting for our priority dates to be current for our immigrant visas. The nursing supervisor from UPHS came here to UK last december to tell to their applicants about them offering this H1B. I really don't know what to do. will it jeopardize my immigrant application if I'll go ahead for this H1B? They reassured us that the salary and benefits will be the same. By the way, UPHS is also my sponsor for my immigrant application so if ever I'll go for this H1B, I'm not gonna be changing employer or agency. Does that make things any better?

H1-B Visa Available for Nurses?
Hi suzanne/Lawrence, Please help to enlighten me as I'm quite confused right now. I know from all the information you've given that there's no way H1B can be given to a nurse but I got a call from my agency today asking me if I want to go to US with H1B visa as my employer, UPHS, is willing to pay for that despite the fact that they've already spent for my immigrant application. I was supposed to have gotten my immigrant visa last year but I lacked one document (NBI) from Philippines, when i went for my interview and it was already too late when I sent it to the US embassy as all the visas have already been used up. My agency has also forwarded to me all the correspondence from UPHS answering all questions about them sponsoring H1B visas for us nurses. What do you think about this? I don't want to go to US illegally. Is this legal? But University of Penn Health System is such a big institution to be using dodgy means to bring nurses to their hospitals. I'm so confused. Please reply. I'm here in Uk right now and I would also like to know what will going to happen to my immigrant apllication If I can go to US thru H1B. Thanks in advance.

Retrogression Is Not Over
Ok. Thanks a lot for all the info. God bless!

Retrogression Is Not Over
Oh dear, I'll have to stop hoping then that I'll get a visa in October.... Does that mean that those who got their interview cancelled has a better chance of getting a visa in October than I am? Does it also mean that my only chance now of getting a visa is to wait for another batch of recaptured visas to become available again? Also, you always mention about USCIS still accepting 1-485 applications even though there are no more visas available. What possible effect would this exactly do? Is it good or bad for someone like me still awaiting for a visa? Thank you so much again Suzanne for giving concrete explanations to my queries.

Retrogression Is Not Over
Hi! Thanks for replying. My country of birth is Philippines. Anyway, I guess I just have to wait and see. I just don't understand how they work in giving out visas 'coz I initially thought that once you're interviewed, a visa is already reserved for you. And the fact that they told me that they will give me my visa a week after they received the lacking document. They could have told me right there and then that I will have to wait now 'til the next visa numbers are available. It would have save me all the trouble and money of making sure I get my police clearance ASAP. How long by the way is the medical valid for? some says it's six months some says it's one year.
