Already have an Associates degree but want to be a nurse?
If you know which Universities you are interested in, go directly to their websites and search their nursing department website. Specific info on their programs should be listed. UCF has an info session on Monday (Feb 1) which is required from what I could see on their website. That's a great place to get most your questions answered that weren't answered on their website. Good Luck :)

If Nurses were paid $8.50 per hr, would you or would you not
Some new grad positions only pay about $25/hour and that's in California!! I should've saved on the student loans and got into cleaning houses.

Rules regarding working as a CNA after getting RN lic
I am a new grad RN and finding it beyond difficult to get work. It's really difficult for those of us with no connections to get hired right now. Is there any rule that specifically prohibits an RN from working as a CNA? I'm hoping that maybe this way I can get in through internal hiring. I am in California if that makes a difference.

Do new grad have a limited shelf life
I am a new grad and haven't found a job yet and am getting worried that I am going to soon become "unhireable". Is there a point after which managers are going to simply pass over my resume and only consider those who have more recently graduated? If so, when is that point?

California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?
Anyone heard anything, good or bad, back from last week's interviews? I think someone said they were going to have 2nd interviews, but the people I interviewed with never mentioned that. Anyone know if that was that definite?

California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?
From what I've heard Texas is one of the easier places right now for new grads. 127 apps for 15 spots actually sounds pretty good from what I've been seeing. I've heard 200 apps for 2 spots. 96 interviewed for 8 spots and I'm sure a whole lot more applied than those 96. One place I applied to had over 500 applications. These numbers are directly from recruiters and places I've applied/interviewed at, not just hearsay. The smartest thing right now (IMHO) would be to get a job anywhere you can and just get that experience under your belt. Once you have that you can apply to where you really wanna live. An ASN with 1 year exp will get the job before any BSN new grad generally. Also, if you already have a CA license, look in more rural areas, those will have lower app counts. Good luck, it's tough out there.

Have you applied locally? Why not stay where you graduated? CA is one of the worst places in the country to apply as a new grad right now, not trying to be a downer, just being honest. We have local BSNs with multiple degrees who haven't gotten jobs for nearly a year.

It's REALLY BAD in the bay area right now. Did you go to school up here? My synthesis instructor said your best bet would be to try at the place where you did your preceptorship. From what I've heard only 2 people in my class have jobs so far. The one I know was in the bay area was an internal hire (already a CNA at the hospital). Another person I know who got an interview had an in with a family friend who worked at the hospital's HR and a well liked MD there who also recommended her. I haven't heard if she got it yet, just that she was able to get interviewed. I talked to Sutter at the career fair in April and she said they weren't hiring any new grads, I don't know if anything has changed since then. I also heard Kaiser is on a hiring freeze.

Did you happen to ask how many were applying for how many spots?

importance of interview in getting new grad RN job??
You're probably right. I think I was hoping to hear it was part of the whole package evaluated and that a bad interview could be overcome somehow. I just hope I get some clinical questions next time around, even hard ones. At least then it'd be in my knowlede bank. I think I'll try to review common interview questions notes beforehand too. Thanks for the advice :)

importance of interview in getting new grad RN job??
How much do interviews decide who gets hired when it comes to new grad RNs? I keep getting interviews, but not job offers. I get so nervous sometimes my mind goes blank and I know what to say but can't think of it on the spot, especially when they're questions like "why are you the best candidate?". Does the interview always make or break your chances of getting hired? Even questions I reviewed previously I sometimes go blank on. Any insights/advice?
