Why is it MEN seem to get along better in this field than WOMEN??!!!
What an excellent quote: " I am dumbfounded by the extent women seem to go just to get the upper hand." Thanks for the repeat on that quote Blueskky...the quote from Bbear that is. It's just my point. We women stab each other instead of working for the good of us all.....or the "team of women in the workplace." Then we complain when the lack of a team is available to get things done. So, we work twice as hard and complain some more. Go figure!

Why is it MEN seem to get along better in this field than WOMEN??!!!
:angryfire Look, I'm speaking from years of experience......not just mine, but my mother who is an 80 year old nurse......."The field won't get any better until more MEN get into it, just like the TEACHERS......once the Men were in, (the field) they unionized and got better pay." Women on the other hand, offer to do more with less rather than stick up for themselves....or work as a team. Look at history.........what profession works as hard as we do.....without pay and benefits as good as auto workers? Do you think any group of men would put up with the ***** most women do in the work arena? NO! Oh yeah, my son is a nurse, and do ya want to know what he said after about a week on the floor with female nurses....."Mom, all women do is B****, B****, B****!" I told my son, "Welcome to the world of working with women!" But, rather than continue to complain about or say, I would never want my kids to choose the "NURSING" profession (how hypocitical) I have encouraged my children to work in it! Nurses who waste time and valuable energy on "clicky" behavior need to go and work at an auto factory and see how far it gets them.....and frankly those individuals or nurses that promote that type of behavior are dragging our profession down. Spoken from 3 generations of nurses.......looking to change things. I say lets create a movement to "exile the clicks!" Lets think of a snappy saying and put it on a nursing pin we all so like to wear. Enough said, :rotfl:

How much do you make?
I don't know but, after reading some of these salaries..........I be awful ticked working in a unit and getting less than 25 bucks per hour..........or lets put it like this...........I be awful ticked knowing I'm making less than an assembly worker in Detroit..........and without retirement benefits like the auto workers get. Ya know...........why can't nurses start a National Union? I'm sure it would be years before we have any real power but..... I know U of M nurses are unionized.........I wonder if we have any of those on the board and what is your pay scale and or nurse to patient ratio???? Any U of M nurses out here? Any Union Nurses out here? What is your pay scale???? Daughter and wife of a Union Leaders.........yep, in DETROIT

Feeling incompetent
Hang in there............the only way to feel competent is to practice, practice, practice........a.k.a. work, work, work. Your not incompetent....in fact you have excellent perception......it's the staff that think they "know it all," who are incompetent. Your skills will improve as you are exposed to similar situation over and over and similar patients over and over. Ya can't get that from reading, only by doing and knowing when to ask for help. You have critical thinking skills it's written all over your words in your post. From a RN who was trained in LTC by an LPN and thankful!:kiss

Vital signs? How often do you take them on your LTC unit?
Boy, you "guys," do take vital a heck of a lot more than us. When I first started in LTC I was uncomfortable with taking vitals prn....but now it makes a lot more sense. It was a transition from hospital to LTC nursing problem on my part. We take vitals q shift for the first 3 admission days, temps on on the first 3 ABT days, full vitals on the first 3 fall days, and prn with condition changes. Sometimes weekly for certain meds or daily for lanoxin for example. I usually do my own....which is another thread cause I just don't trust the CNA's vitals. Maybe it's a control thing hey? LOL Anyway, hope this helps.

Pre-setting meds....
Hmmmmmmmm...........okay here is reality........you ain't suppose to do it.....but, when working a shift where I happen to have 20+ of the same meds suppose to be given at 6:30 am and your have to check blood sugars too.....well lets just say I label, label, label, and pull up everything earlier in the shift when I'm more awake. I certainly don't make a habit of it when "State," is around. Call it nursing judgement or stupidity.....luckily I don't often have to work those shifts.
