  1. Thank you all for your replies. I heard it rains 6 months a year. Is this true? And economy is bad too in Portland? John
  2. Any more suggestions?
  3. And how is the market demand for RN?
  4. Hi folks: I attended American Critical Care Nursing Conference yesterday in Chicago. A job booth from Vancouver, Oregon caught my attention. I am very interested in moving to Portland now. I will like to know how much I will be getting paid as a RN with 3.5 year experieces. How is housing price in Portland comparing to the pay? Which hospitals are good to work at? Thank you all for your helps! John
  5. Heard a lot of complaints about BON Texas, can I just use a compact state license here even I intend to stay here for long term. If employers don't care, I am guessing I should be all right. Thanks.
  6. If you are from a compact state, I would just use my compact license here in Texas, never bother with that Texas license. Compact license is as good as Texas one. Your employer don't care.
  7. $22 per hr for new grad? That is in Texas? I can't believe it. With 4 yrs experience, I should make $30/hr.
  8. Hard to find a job in SF area. Nursing market there is saturated. If you really wants to move there. Take whatever job you can get, then look for good opportunities. Pay is good $40+ with experience.
  9. Which states have nursing shortage without the reason of low pay?
  10. I used to work with travel nurses from NC, Texas and Iowa. These are low wage driven shortage.
  11. I noticed some areas have shortages just because nurses are underpaid. Example: Midwest states and southern cali.
  12. My brief summary from above feedbacks: Southern states Arizona, California(Southern)Texas,Florida,Kentucky,Louisiana,Oklahoma, Northern States like: Idaho, Minnesota, Boston have no or mild shortages. And Parts of Arkansas and Missouri. Thank you all for the participation. Let's continue replying. :redbeathe Answers need to be more specific. Within each state, situation may become different. Example:Southern Cali has shortage while Northen Cali doesn't.
  13. Ask your doctors to give you non-controled meds instead.
  14. WE may get consistent answers in certain area, plus answers here we offer some references. Thanks.
  15. Everyday, Newspaper talk about nursing shortage. But some nurses in the certain areas can't even get a job quickly or under paid. I wonder where is the shortage at? I want get a good summary to help those nurses who are have troubles to land a job. Thank you John:redbeathe My answer: I know Tucson Arizona needs nurses really bad. You can get a job on the day you go out.
  16. It is all about market supply and demand. Arizona has more nursing shortages. That is why they pay more incentives for overtimes. If you work at Houston where has nusing shortage, you may find more incentives. I think DWF only has mild version of nursing shortage.
  17. Overtime in AZ is over 36hr in that week. Always get bonus for each overtime shift. AZ is a good place to work. But other things like kids education, spouse employment opportunites in AZ is not as good as Texas. Plus AZ has a hot hot summer.
  18. I know I have to work overtime to pay the bills as I am the sole breadwinner in the house. In AZ. hospitals pay us bonus for doing overtime. How hospitals in DWF do that? Do they give out bonus? Thank you for your response.
  19. Hey: If I am right, $3500 she pays on property tax is pre-tax money on Federal tax. So you can take 27% off that $3500.
  20. Thank you for your discussions. I am finding Texas is a good place for nurses.
  21. You are right. The tite of this post should be: Which part of Texas is the best deal for nurses? Houston area? DWF area? or East Texas? Thank you. John
  22. I agree with you. Texas is not bad comparing to many other States. We RNs are underpaid. This is the root of this argument here. while we consider the impact on our pocket when we move to Texas. We also need to consider our family needs, pollution, quality of life, culture, career opportunities etc. Each other should make decisions based on our priorities. Thank you all.
