Role of the nurse in the L&D area
The role of the nurse in the L&D area consists of a lot of teaching, pain management, and assessment. The teaching and assessments are top priorities (in my opinion) because many women are first time mothers who have never cared for a newborn before. They need to know things like how to care for a circumcision, when to call the doctor, how to bathe the baby, etc. Good assessment skills are essential too because you have to be able to distinguish between a boggy and a firm fundus, assess the amount and characteristic of the lochia, check for a Homan's sign, signs and symptoms of eclampsia, etc. I did my L&D rotation at a large medical center, and we had to care for the newborn as well as the mother. The newborn assessments are very in depth as well and are performed hourly as opposed to once a shift, which is another reason why good assessment skills are a must. In my opinion, it was awkward at first to care for these patients because most of the time they are not sick, they are well, but they need encouragement, support, and comforting all the same. Hope that helps you out a little.

Upstate NY: How long to get ATT?
Thanks. My results should be available tomorrow (I'm guessing) because it says you can do Quick Results after 48 hours. I wasn't nervous until I actually sat down at the computer. But once I got "in the zone" it was like any other test. I wasn't focused on anything but the screen, everything else was drowned out. Then, like I mentioned before, question 75 passed, the computer didn't go off, so I started getting nervous again. I guess my best advice would be to try not to look at what number you are on because it can really damage your focus. Get "in the zone", take it one question at a time, and if you start to panic, practice deep breathing or take a break to get a drink of water. Good luck, I wish you the best. Julia

Upstate NY: How long to get ATT?
Thanks for your concern! The questions were elementary at first, but they got really tough. They started throwing disease states and medications at me that I have never even heard of before. When I got to question 75 and clicked the "next" button, the screen didn't go blank so I started to panic. I laid back in the chair, took a deep breath, and told myself to calm down. I finished question #76, then #77, and the screen went gray. So I was 2 questions away from where I wanted to be. My nurse manager called me today to tell me what my schedule was going to be like and I told him that I had literally, "Just taken the boards." He asked me how many questions I completed, and when I said "77", he said either I did really great or really horrible. I laughed, but I can't help but wonder? Pearson Vue does the "Quick Results" in NY, but my "Quick Results" aren't available yet because I just took my boards today. So here I sit, with my beer, LOL. I'll keep my fingers crossed til Sunday!

Upstate NY: How long to get ATT?
I got my ATT last Thursday via email. I then went to the Pearsonvue website and set my test date for this Friday June 1st. It was pretty fast. Hope that helps.

Nice forums :)
My name is Julia and I just graduated from nursing school and I am new to this site. I have a question that hopefully somebody can answer. I take the NCLEX on Friday and was wondering when you receive the results? I don't know if it varies from state to state, but I am in NY. By Sunday I will be pulling my hair out, and by Monday 50% of any sanity that I had will be lost. In addition, I begin working on June 12 in the CCU and I think it would be nice to know whether I will be a GN or an RN. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
