  1. Hi, I had many classes that I took at a different college that were part of the pre or corequisites for nursing. Those grades do not count towards your actual Nassau average, but they do get counted (with whatever grade you got) for admission to the nursing program. My gpa from the 12 classes I took at Nassau was 4.0, but my gpa for admission to nursing was 3.9 because of those classes from my previous degree. The 3.9 didn't appear on my transcript, but that's the number they based my admission on. Good luck.
  2. KKING, all your grades will count except for the effective communication one. I had credits from another school and even though I finished 9 classes at NCC with a 4.0, my grades for prereqs taken at another school were added which lowered my gpa to 3.9. All your grades look good except for sociology. You would probably have gotten in for day this year. I'm not positive about evening, but I know some of my classmates have Cs and got in. I think it depends on who your competition is. Good luck with everything.
  3. You have to try and get the best grades possible, but even with a 4.0 you probably won't get in if all you have are the 4 prereqs. You should take as many of the non nursing classes as you can before applying b/c they will take someone with a 3.5 and all those classes finished over someone with a 3.9 and only a few classes finished. You should try to do really well in A&P 1 and 2. 2 is not a prereq, but I wouldn't apply w/out it. Also, if you take all the english and social science classes you will probably get good grades which would boost your GPA. The grades needed to get in vary with the applicant pool each year, but I'm in the evening class and know at least one person that got in w a 3.75.
  4. Alli, I actually just re-read your post. I was actually wondering about the spring semester so that I could try to work out a work schedule for the year. I will still go to school tho, because I'm real curious about who my teachers will be.
  5. Thanks so much everyone for replying. I will go check the schedule at school. I really would have never thought that they would know the schedule this far in advance. Thanks, Ehope
  6. Thank you so much for replying. I was interested in applying for a new position and was wondering if I would have a constant schedule throughout the 2 years. I guess I will not be able to do that since I may need to change my schedule every semester. I am a little bummed because that job sounded very interesting.
  7. Hello, I remember that at orientatioon they said that eventually you will go to clinical 2 days a week. What days are they for the evening program? Are they always the same? We have clinical on Thursday now, so do we keep going on Thurs every semester, or does it change? Thanks. Ehope
  8. "We all got our payouts and just simply moved on. " Mother23, thanks for taking the time to write this. I was seriously considering applying for this once done with school, but if the situation is that dire I don't know if it's worth it. I want to get ICU experience and they were the only place I really found that hire GNs. If anyone knows of any other places that would hire a new grad ADN in the ICU I would be very grateful if you shared. Can you explain what you mean by the payouts? Is that something you had to pay them? Also, I know that you have to take critical care essentials I and II. Not to sound stupid, but do you get to keep that on your record if you leave early? thanks, E
  9. Thanks everyone for answering such a silly question. I guess I'll wear the stupid tights just in case. Also, maybe the support hose will be better than regular ones so I'll give them a try. Alli, it's good to know that maybe I won't ever have to actually wear that dress... And oh yeah, the guys don't have to wear anything special.
  10. At our orientation the other day, they said that women must wear white stockings or tights under our scrub pants to clinicals (no knee highs allowed) in case that we need to change into a scrub dress. Why would we ever have to change into a dress?? I really HATE tights and have no desire to be running around in a dress. If anyone knows what this is for, please let me know cause I really can't figure it out.
  11. I'm taking algebra and trig for the 1st summer session, and elementary functions in calculus for the 2nd....Yeah, It's gonna be a looong summer.
  12. Alli, thanks for your reply. I already took it out and for some reason, the hole starts closing right away. I can't keep taking it in and out because it hurts/bleeds and I really don't want to get an infection. I will miss it though....Also, I just wanted you to know that I always appreciated your thoughtful posts and all the info you provide. Nat, how do you know what teacher you will have?
  13. Good luck! I'll be there at 2:30.
  14. Also, this is going to sound totally stupid, but I just took out my nose ring and miss it already...I know better than showing up to the interview/orientation with it in, and I'm sure I wouldn't be able to keep it during school. It just sucks, because even though I've had it for years, the hole starts closing up almost right away without it.
  15. Hi Nat, Good luck to you too! I was very excited yesterday, but now I'm just tired because I couldn't sleep.
  16. Hi Trying, If I were you I would contact the school. They will be able to give you a list of all the classes you need to take before you can apply for the nursing program. Since you've never been to college you will have to take English (composition and literature), some math, and a few other electives that vary from school to school (maybe psychology, an art class, general sciences, sociology). I would start out taking maybe 2 of these classes a semester so you can kind of ease into it and become accustomed to the studying and time commitment necessary. Before you know it, you'll have a whole bunch of classes under your belt and will feel more confident to move on to some of the harder classes like Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology. Don't let other people's opinions scare you away. Only you know what you are capable of. Nursing scool is hard, but think of all the others that have done it and believe that you are at least as intelligent and commited as they were, if not more.
  17. Your post really reminds me of my relationship with my ex boyfriend. We constantly went through cycles of this passive-aggressive negativity about anything that would change in my life. At first he would make a big stink about it, then he would grudgingly "support" it, and then he would revert back to being unhappy about it. This applied to anything from me getting a new job to deciding to go back to school. The final straw came when I was offered a promotion at work and accepted it on the spot. The only difference being that it changed the days I had off. I was so happy and so proud that I got it, and I called him beaming and beyond excited to share my great news...he proceeded to get mad at me and sulk because I didn't consult with him before accepting. In any case, after 4 looong years we broke up. I finally asked him why he could never truly be happy for me, and he basically said that it was due to his own insecurities. It turns out that he had been trying to get a different job for a long time without any luck, and felt jealous/threatened any time that I seemed to "advance" in life. Be it a new job or going back to school. He felt more comfortable thinking of us as being on the "same level." It will be very hard for you to go through school if you feel you are not supported by the one person that should support you most. You are working hard to better your future together and should be encouraged. If you really want to be a nurse, you will regret it forever if you don't and will start resenting him for "keeping you back." Please try to work this out before school starts so you can concentrate on your studies.
  18. I'm so happy you actually called them. I remember them saying that the interview is a formality at the info sessions but it's good to hear it from them now. I'll see you guys there. And you're right, my letter says May 20th is advisement/registration/orientation.
  19. Yeah, their podcasts are great. I really used them when taking A&P 1 and 2 and think it really helped me. Not all the classes are great, but if you scroll between the different years you will find a teacher whose teaching style you like. Rescue, I think it's an awesome idea to use them for Clep.
  20. Hi, I don't know about the other schools, but for Nassau they only look at your grades from classes that apply to the nursing program. They calculate your GPA based on that. My overall GPA from my 1st bachelor was 3.4, but luckily I got good grades in the classes that did transfer. I took all the pre/co reqs and ended up with a 3.95. To see a list of the classes clik on the link and scroll to the bottom. http://www.ncc.edu/Academics/AcademicDepartments/Nursing/routes_for_admission.htm Also, I know that they prefer it if you are done with most of the pre/co reqs instead of applying with just the pre reqs completed. I got ino their evening program for Fall 2008 and can't wait to start. Good luck.
  21. Thanks Nat! My interview is on May 20th also. See you there.
  22. Hi Natingale, that's awesome!!! Congratulations. I just got the same letter myself and feel so relieved right now. Nervous, but relieved. Does anyone know what the interview is all about? They said it was mostly a formality, but can anyone who went through it let us know what it's like?
  23. i really thought the article was very interesting and was surprised that so little is known about the chemicals nurses are exposed to daily. i am not a nurse yet, and always assumed that a reasonable amount of information was available. http://www.ewg.org/node/25846 excerpt: "washington - in a letter sent today, (jan 8, 2008) environmental working group (ewg) executive director richard wiles urged lawmakers to call on the bush administration to stop its almost seven years of foot dragging and move forward on implementing the critical national workplace exposures study for nurses and other frontline healthcare professionals. ................................................................................................ a recent survey by ewg, the american nurses association, health care without harm and the environmental health education center at the university of maryland school of nursing found that nurses who were exposed frequently to sterilizing chemicals, cleaners, drug preparation residues, radiation, and other hazardous substances reported increased rates of asthma, miscarriage, and certain types of cancer. " the website also has links to other articles on the subject.
  24. Hi Philip, short of calling the schools you are interested in and asking them I don't know how you can find out for sure. Classes that definitely will be part of your science GPA are: Chemistry Physics, A & P Microbiology Classes in the grey area are: Psychology Nutrition maybe Pharmacology I'm not positive about the maths for CRNA school, but I do know that medical schools count any math courses as part of the science gpa. Also, (if they are like med schools) if classes fall in the area of math/science and you already took them, the grades will be part of the science GPA whether the class is required for your program or not.
  25. I hope you get in at whichever your top choice is. My friend did the same thing with not submitting the transcript. They automatically assign it a "C" and she thinks that's why she didn't get in the year before. She fixed it and got in on her next try. Molloy will only accept 40 transfer credits, and since I already have a bachelor from FIT and took all the pre-nursing classes at Nassau that would really be a losing financial proposition for me. That school is definitely out for me. If I don't get in I'll reapply at Nassau (I am currently taking micro), and try Farmingdale and Phillips Beth Israel.
