  1. The GradPlus loan which is a federal loan will cover the rest. Just google gradplus and depaul and the form will come up. Or I think you can get the form through campusconnect. Good luck! DePaul is definitely expensive!
  2. Not to add to the confusion, but I just came across this in my med-surg book. It says that if vasopressin tannate in oil is given IM it should be administered in the evening so that maximum results are obtained during sleep. (Page 1148 in Brunner and Suddarth's) Good luck!
  3. Somogyi is morning hyperglycemia as a result of hypoglycemia during the night and is the result of too high of a dose of insulin at night. Dawn phenomenon is morning hyperglycermia without hypoglycemia during the night and is a result of normal cycles within the body. Here is a website that explains it more: http://www.dlife.com/dLife/do/ShowContent/inspiration_expert_advice/expert_columns/garnero_0106.html
  4. I am also in DePaul's program. I have a BS in Biology and no BSN. You do not need a BSN for DePaul's program. It is a Master's Entry program for non-nurses with bachelor degrees in non-nuring fields.
  5. Look into Master's Entry programs. They are generally for non-nursing students with a BS/BA in a field other than nursing. When you complete the program you have a Master's in Nursing and are at least an RN (sometimes more depending on the program)
  6. o Additive effects Two drugs with similar action sum their effects 1 + 1 = 2 E.g., ETOH & sedatives cause increased sedation o Synergism Two drugs with different mechanisms of action produce greater effects 1 + 1 = 3 E.g., codeine and aspirin together produce greatly increased pain relief
  7. I was actually in your exact shoes last year... different major, same school. I applied to (and was accepted to) two programs in the Chicago area that are Master's programs for students with non-nursing bachelor's degrees. Which program is right for you depends on what you are hoping to do. UIC has a program that is a Master's/NP program and is at least three years. DePaul (which is where I am now) has a program that is only a Master's program (and you can go on for your NP). The Master's portion is two years. I would definitely suggest going the MSN route rather than any BSN completion programs. It is really only a year longer and you will have a Master's If you have any other questions let me know. I am definitely glad to help a fellow Illini :)
  8. I was in your shoes about a year ago, so I definitely understand where you are coming from. I am currently attending a Master's Entry program at DePaul in Chicago. The program is a two year's MSN program for people with a BS in another subject and you can easily bridge to the NP certificate program after finishing this. UIC in Chicago also as a similar program which I would definitely recommend. If you aren't set on Ohio then check these out, but there are Master's Entry programs all over the place. Good Luck!
  9. I actually applied to COD as a back up so I can only speak from my experience. You should have all of the prereqs finished (with very good grades) before applying and do well on the entrance exam and you should be accepted. They base everything on a point system, so the more points you get the greater chance you have of getting in. I would suggest going to the COD nursing department, getting the checklist, and making sure that you complete everything you can before applying. This does mean at least a year of classes before applying though. I was put on CODs waitlist because I did not have all of the prereqs finished before applying. I was actually enrolled in the courses but grades weren't posted until the day the prereqs were due and was 1 hour short of a bachelor's degree. Ironically, I was accepted to DePaul's Master's Entry Program and was very high on UIC's wait list for their GEP program (because I already have a BS). So what I am saying is yes COD is hard to get into; not necessarily because you have to be smart to get into the program, but because they just base it on who has all the stuff done. The waitlist does not carry over from year to year; however, so that does increase your chances. However, what I would honestly suggest is that you go to a four-year university. It will be quicker in the long run and you will receive a better more well rounded education. You seem to have your heart set on staying in Chicago, but there are other four-year nursing schools in Illinois, including ISU and SIU. Good Luck!
  10. When I was filling this pre-req, I took a Social Work Research Methods course. I believe that they are wanting a social studies based class. Before you register for a course, I would ask the advisors at UIC if the course would fulfill the requirement. I sent them the course description and syllabus. Hope this helps and good luck!
  11. Congrats to both of you! Acute care is such a great specialty. Good luck in the first 15 months and beyond!
  12. I'm guessing we've all heard from UIC by now so I will get the ball rolling on our news I was waitlisted for peds. Obviously not what I wanted, but I am surprisingly not really upset. I have a backup in DePaul and I have accepted their offer. UIC is still my number one choice so now I have to keep hoping for some peds to turn down the school Congrats to all those who were accepted! Best of luck and *hopefully* I'll get to join you in January
  13. Is anyone applying for peds? Also, we should be getting e-mails by the 15th. It sounded more like we would be receiving them by this Friday! Good luck to everyone. Has anyone applied/been accepted to any other programs in Chicago?
  14. Is anyone else anxiously waiting to hear from UIC about the GEP program? It would be nice to know the other members who are biting their nails over the anticipation of receiving that letter!
  15. You may also look into accelerated BSN programs. At least in Illinois there are one year accelerated programs. These programs are actually shorter than many ADN programs.
