*Forgot to say - Don't fret over re-taking those core pre-reqs for a straight A. True, both low/high grades will be displayed on your Webgate record, but the department will only include the higher when evaluating your application-GPA. I am in the program...after applying with a 3.79...after re-taking Micro for that required A.

The number of applications does not matter if denied because of 'too low' GPA. However, your application(s) may be *remembered* if you're denied due to insufficient documentation, incomplete forms, etc. If you've got your eggs in line, are a master at organizing the requirements, and apply with a minimum 3.7 GPA...you should get in. I had Dr. Gwendolyn Cook...excellent! She is very structured, wants you to succeed, and isn't afraid to give you tips for easier calculations. Math has always intimidated me (my highest section was business math - never took algebra either) and I thought I would be left behind from day-one. I earned an A and entered the nursing program with confidence for medication calculations. Just my .02 Good luck!

We (students beginning the program this month) have been repeatedly told by numerous sources, that the cut-off was at 3.7 for alternates. However, please don't let that intimidate you - this session was also the last time WCCCD allowed outside students to apply for admission without having (new requirement is already in effect) a minimum of twelve credit hours from WCCCD. From what we've been told, it was WCCCD's highest amount of applicants AND highest GPA cut-off in program history. Most are assuming that the cut-off for Winter 2009 will be somewhere in the usual range of 3.38 - 3.63. I also got a "C" in Micro. I left the class feeling frustrated because I studying my butt off, and felt like it was a waste of money AND PRECIOUS TIME. My instructor was not only a new hire; she was a PT'er who had just graduated college, had no teaching experience, and was known for giving students wrong answers - due to her lack of experience as a whole. So, I opted to re-taking the course with an awesome instructor, who has students best interests in mind, yet expects hard work. It was also extremely obvious that she was very experienced, and knew her stuff! I earned an "A" with the second instructor and walked away with a wealth of knowledge and confidence. If I were you, I'd apply! Maybe I'm odd, but I would rather be told that I didn't make the Winter 2009 program, re-take Micro (Get that A!) and apply in confidence Spring 2009...then to not apply and take the chance of falling within the accepted GPA range, giving up 'your spot.' I did as I was told; combine the two. I thought of the two topics more so as, where do I see nursing in the future, and how will I make an impact in the field AS a nurse. I don't know anyone (personally) who turned in two essays.

I recall Ms.Norris mentioning that a drug screening would be necessary for WCCCD's program, but it's not included in our list of requirements. Am I overlooking something? Are we supposed to have a drug screening prior to orientation too?

Hey everyone...you can kill me...but only AFTER I graduate. :sofahider I asked my husband about the book situation and he reminded me that our son's first DS broke, and the second is the same color as his PSP. So there you have it. I had the two mixed up the entire time. He did verify, however, that the PSP uses the Palm OS version. Does this help anyone? Will it help me? Yes My husband found several DS functions by surprise. His intention was to 'tease' my son by playing a few games when he was grounded from electronics - and he went out and purchased one for himself. It can hold complete programs (even Office, DreamWeaver, etc), you can increase gig storage, use photo programming, full internet capability (we use wireless), calendar/organizer, calculator, and much more. My husband is an avid reader and hasn't had a paperback in his hand since purchasing the DS. My son also enjoys playing video games with his classmates. Same game ownership and you can play with friends in different households online. Pretty cool huh? And they are more affordable at $125 - $150 NEW.

Erica I wouldn't put much trust in the website information. Last I checked, it had not been sufficiently updated in quite a while. The program nursing classes are held at (Belleville) Western and (Detroit) NW campuses. They used to be held at the Downtown location too, but that's changed (in case someone mentions that - it's no longer an option). WCCCD calculates your application GPA with these five required pre-reqs: English I, Psych, Micro, A&P I, and A&P II. While I (and everyone else) would encourage you to take care of all sub-core pre-reqs, they will only consider your GPA inclusive of the sub-core grades IF it raises your overall GPA and IF you've applied and fall on the competition fence with other applicants (and at that point, they would also consider your NET scores to break any/all ties). Those sub-core classes are: Soc, Am.Govt, Eng II, MedMath, Patho, Lifespan and Nutrition. There is additional requirement associated with MedMath - in that it MUST be taken prior to completion of the initial portion of the first semester. It will not matter if you've earned equivalent 4.0 in lecture or clinical, or if you're everyone's personal IV calculator...you MUST successfully pass MedMath or you can't continue with the program. As far as HFCC wait-list? I can only speak as a witness of a close friend that graduated last June. She was told 1.5 - 2 years and to continuously check with the nursing department to see where she was on the list. She called numerous times and finally - she was in - after ten months. Maybe it was luck, maybe it was a complete fluke, but ten months was a nice surprise. Hope this helps?

Why can't we opt for putting the same book information onto our DS's? A DS does pretty much everything that a PDA does. Can someone give me a few website addresses (for electronic book purchases) so I can call and ask? We've been using our DS's for reading a long time. We rarely have a problem finding a book title. Help me save a buck and still have the essentials! :loveya:

From my (witness) experience, it is true for everyone. I had two classmates in Micro that arrived to class just a LITTLE upset. They had planned on applying in May 08 for the fall 08 program and were both told (at different times - guess they were in the hall discussing their angst) that they would need to wait and apply for the winter 09 because the POSTING of their pre-reqs (inclusive of WebGate) were required no later than April 1st. Our micro doc confirmed the information too. Again, just what I witnessed, nothing in concrete...but I heard the instructors response with my own ears.

Hi Erica! I was once in your shoes; HFCC or WCCCD. I chose WCCCD and start the nursing program this fall. I wanted to inform/remind you of something that many people overlook. WCCCD requires these courses be completed AND POSTED to your transcript prior to April 2st. I had several friends that finished up their pre-req's in April (some had 4.0 GPA) but still couldn't apply for fall entry because their grades aren't posted until after-the-fact. Anyhow, just trying to help - keep the aforementioned in mind when arranging your schedule. GOOD LUCK! Teresa

Our mail clerk neglected to deliver at all yesterday, so I'm not sure if it was supposed to be in the mail yesterday but... I GOT MY LETTER TODAY AND I'M IN !!!!!!!! Orientation is on Tuesday, August 5th from 8:30 - 4:30. Who else made it? My husband is working today and I've no one to do the Happy Dance with! One of my instructors told me that it's true, their first 100 were based on a cut-off of 3.7 GPA. Not sure where it stands now. I applied with a 3.77. Doesn't matter now - I made it! WHOOHOO! I'm currently taking online classes, but am usually at Western and Downriver. I haven't seen the new campus - I hope it's awesome! Both the new/old NW campus is only 3 or 4 miles from my house...NICE! Anyone else had the pleasure of looking through its halls? Teresa

I cringe over math like my boys do over shots/injections. I'd rather get my toenails pulled out. I was nervous about the fractions and algebra. I thought that the NET (at least the test version that I was given) was going to include a lot of those variations, but it only had ten or so. Remember that the WCCCD library has the NET preparation book. I couldn't see paying $35 for it - many friends made copies of the stuff they needed to review. Did you say you're planning to take it at HFCC? Teresa

Good luck with the math portion of the NET. If you happened to read a previous post of mine, I hadn't taken ANY sort of math course since 1989 and I was a Logistics Engineer and ISO Internal Auditor...so I can tell you that it didn't have anything to do with nursing, science or general algebra. After much stress, I came to the conclusion that if it's meant to be I'll pass. If not, I'll step up to the plate and study like mad and re-take it. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be! In regard to Mrs.N facilitating the meeting on her own: a few friends thought of that as a 'plus' and a way of getting out of there earlier than expected. I more so agree with you. I would rather have one of them look it over, than to LOOK OVER including something. I can only hope she remembers, but I had to point something out to her in my packet. She was very nice about it and gave me her full-attention. I'm confident in my GPA and secondary GPA. What I'm not confident about is my NET score. I hadn't taken a math course since 1989, and didn't have a chance to review/study for it because my youngest underwent his seventh craniofacial surgery the month prior - and to make matters worse, one week before the NET, he took a horrible stumble down our cement stairwell and suffered head trauma. In hindsight, I'm thankful I passed...but barely. People continuously tell me that my 3.77 GPA doesn't warrant their looking at my NET - I hope they're right.
