  1. I have been an RN for 9 years. I developed my latex allergy 3 years into my nursing practice. It has gradually gotten worse, instead of a rash with asthma I now experience full-blown anaphylaxis with exposure. There are quite a few fresh fruits and vegetables that are cross-reactive and melon is one of them. A good resource is the American Latex Allergy Association.
  2. I have a latex allergy and am scared to death of your supervisor's statement. Latex particles are deadly to some latex allergic people (they are to me!). My advice: keep yourself out of any litigation and keep your conscience clear and continue to use latex free supplies/equipment!
  3. I have no solution but mass amts of sympathy/empathy. I'm latex allergic in a "latex-free" hospital and for some reason am continually exposed to latex foleys and sterile gloves (not to mention the sneaky latex balloons that manage to make it up 4 floors to our unit). Maybe if you go to employee health each time you're exposed all of the cumulative documentation might help?
