  1. I work 3rd shift at a state prison. I am the only nurse there. We have about 2400 inmates. I am so busy I can't see straight most nights. We have lots of assaults, shortness or breath, chest pain, and sports injuries that never get reported until nig...
  2. working at prison

I would NEVER take a cell phone into the prison. At some prisons, it is grounds for termination. What if an inmate got your phone? He/she would have access to all of your personal phone numbers. If you have a smart phone, the inmate could possibly ge...
  3. What's a day like on a strictly "medical" floor?

My first nursing job was on a "medical" floor at a hospital. It was like taking the sickest nursing home patients and putting them on one floor. We had 36 beds and one or two aides. I would say our average age patient was about 70 or 75.
  4. Transfering RN License to TN

The $170 includes your permanent license too. I did not clarify that in my above post.
  5. Transfering RN License to TN

I live in Ohio and am also in the process of obtaining a Tennessee license. It is on the webiste. If you PM me, I'll send you the link. You mail in the application, and you can get a temporary permit (good for 6 months) to work on while they process ...
  6. Anyone familiar with Lemierre's?

I did google it, but from what I've read, there has only been 160 cases diagnosed in the United States in the last 100 years. I doubt I'll find too much. I had already found most of the links posted, but thanks so much to everyone who did post. I rea...
  7. Anyone familiar with Lemierre's?

It's normal flora. We all have it. From my understanding, it lives in our mouths and intestinal tracts.
  8. Anyone familiar with Lemierre's?

My niece was just diagnosed with it. She was in septic shock within days. She was on a vent for 6 days. She has responded well to the antibiotics. She has had some complications, but she is doing much better. The doctor believes the clot in her inter...
  9. Anyone familiar with Lemierre's disease? I know it's very rare. I have been researching it, but I have found limited information.
  10. Nurses Misbehaving While Caring For Inmates

We just had 2 nurses and a CO get fired for having relationships and smuggling in drugs. I agree with the comment that small favors turn into bigger ones. I do NO favors and do not trust ANY inmate. I am not there to be a friend. Corrections is a dif...
  11. Nurses win lawsuit aginst Florida DOC

Our inmates are free to shower when they want and have food available in the dorm all the time. They do have to go to chow at specific times (but are not required to go) and pick up meds that are dispensed by the nurse at specific times. They also ca...
  12. Nurses win lawsuit aginst Florida DOC

Some of our prisoners who behave this way have 90 day sentences not 30 years. Our seg unit is not really the traditional seg unit. There are 2 inmates per cell. They intentionally wait until the nurse is passing meds and masturbate by the cuffport an...
  13. Nurses win lawsuit aginst Florida DOC

I might seem a little harsh, but I think they have it WAY too easy. Our inmates get free cable with one TV to 2 inmates (flatscreens). They get pop, debbies, candy, free medical care, huge food portions, free gym, free college, a library, internet ac...
  14. Nurses win lawsuit aginst Florida DOC

I really don't see it that way at all. Many of these inmates are young and fresh off the street. Some get locked up in seg the first day they are in prison. I see it as more of the mob/riot mentality. One starts doing it, and the rest follow.
  15. Nurses win lawsuit aginst Florida DOC

I can't believe I am reading this. What your wife and her fellow nurses experienced is what I experience every day. I work at a minimum security prison with dorm style housing except for our segregation unit. I am the seg nurse 99% of the time. There...
