Student loan forgiveness (NHSC)
A good overview, thanks. I work at a big hospital in Seattle, as an adult ARNP. My salary is $81K (one year of experience) and ARNP school cost me a LOT; I will have to to NHSC eventually. I wish I didn't have to leave my current job to do so, but the big hospital where I work is not an NHSC site, unfortunately. But for the amount they pay for loans, I'll just have to move for a few years...it's an amazing deal.

Loan repayment for ARNPs?
Hi all, I'm an adult ARNP at a non-profit/academic medical center. I work full time in oncology. I have a LOT of student loans and would like to find a repayment program..I know about NHSC, which I might do eventually, but it'd be nice to not have to move to a rural area to repay my loans. Does the NELRP pay for ARNPs who work in a non-profit organization? They pay for RNs who work in non-profit organizations...but even though I have an RN license, I don't work as an RN now. Anyone have any good ideas?

AANP exam--prep for adult NP?
Hi all, I'm taking the Adult NP exam through the AANP in a couple of months. I'm trying to devise a plan for studying--I think I'm going to review all of my pharm, physical exam normals/abnormals, and pathophys/disease specific info. Then I'm going to use the Leik book and the Fitzgerald book. Have any of you taken the online review course from Fitzgerald? Curious if it was helpful, and worth the $220. Any tips? Thanks, Sam

REALLY annoyed with AANP!
Interesting--I hate to file a BBB complaint, but if I don't hear back from them in the next week I may. I'm waiting on a job, and have been waiting months to certify. It's just beyond ridiculous, especially given that they took my money! Argh!

REALLY annoyed with AANP!
Hi all---I sent my application to test (Adult NP) to the AANP back in early November and STILL have not been approved. I called, and they said that my application was complete but that for 'some reason' it hadn't been approved yet. I'm so so so annoyed--I've been offered an ARNP job and obviously need to take my exam first. They cashed my check (about $400) and weeks and weeks later, I'm still waiting. SO frustrating! I call a couple of times each week and have e-mailed too. Has this happened to anyone else?

If you won the lottery, would you continue to work?
OMG no WAY! I'd be out of there in five minutes. I like my job most of the time but I know I'd be outta there....

Pregnant with twins, working nightshift..help!
Hi all, I'm about 6 months weeks pregnant with b/g twins, technically due in August . Right now I'm a full time student (just finishing up grad school, nursing) and I also work a .6 on the (night) weekends as a staff nurse- pediatric oncologyBMT. Until this month I've done pretty ok with working nights, but the past couple of weeks I just CAN'T do it and I've called in sick for two shifts (out of five or so). I'm wondering if anyone else on here is working nights, and HOW you do it! I'm going to ask my OB for a note, maybe I can get onto evening or day shift for my next month or so. I already have changed from 12 hour shifts to 8, but even after 8 hours on my feet I'm EXHAUSTED. It's so frustrating, I used to be able to do anything and now I just can't. I feel horrible the next day if I am up overnight---like a reallllllly bad hangover. Anyone had this experience? I feel terrible asking for accomodation at work but also bad when I call in sick..I feel stuck about how to handle this. I don't know if my level of exhaustion/lack of stamina is 'normal' or if I should just suck it up and keep going.

HIPAA violation with chart note?
Well I know that she said she was going to forward it to a bunch of people, which would be a pretty obvious offense, since these people aren't in a 'need to know' group. I'm still trying to figure out what I did wrong, it's so frustrating. And I haven't heard back from her or anyone else all day. Sigh!

Passed the AANP exam
Awesome! I bet you feel great about that, congratulations!

HIPAA violation with chart note?
Thanks for all of your replies, I'm a little stunned. As a working nurse and soon to be ARNP I felt that I had a pretty clear understanding of HIPAA when it comes to what is appropriate and not appropriate to share. I'm super annoyed that the preceptor automatically shared this with at least five other people, none of whom are directly involved in the patient care (or my education). It's an embarassment to me, and for no good reason, in my opinion. If this was wrong then I'm very curious to find out why, because I just don't understand. Thanks for your responses, much appreciated. Here's hoping my blood pressure goes down soon! lol..Samarooni

HIPAA violation with chart note?
It totally makes sense that in a small town this might be a challenge, but this is in a huge city in a clinic with well over a thousand patients. Her age was 47 or so, totally 'typical'. I too have heard of not putting extreme ages on notes. I just put "L is a 47 year old Caucasian female"... and then continued on with my note. I'm curious what the instructor will do, but it sure is upsetting in the meantime--you'd think if I done it wrong this entire year someone would have said something!

Was this a HIPAA violation?
Hi all, I cross-posted this on the ARNP board as well. I'm an RN in ARNP school and am seeking more opinions, this is giving me an MI today. Thanks in advance! **** Hi all, I'm an ARNP student and was recently reprimanded by an instructor for what she views as a 'possible HIPAA violation'. This is my last quarter as an ARNP student so this is a bit of a shock! I learned that in order to share chart notes with instructors/etc that we could either photocopy or e-mail them, as long as all patient identifying data was not on there and/or had been blacked out. Pretty much all you can have is age and sex, not even a birthdate . So I sent a note about a patient to my preceptor the other day--a regular SOAP note with NO identifying information. All it included was a first initial, age, and presumed ethnicity--all of which I thought were ok. I got back a frantic e-mail from her saying she'd shared this with everyone at the clinic and the school and that it was to be investigated. I have sent DOZENS of e-mails just like this to various preceptors/instructors while I've been in school and have never had a problem. What did I miss? Any advice much appreciated. Ugh. :-(

HIPAA violation with chart note?
I'm baffled to by it all and really upset that now I look like a total A$$ to the clinic and what not. I too wondered why *she* forwarded it..um..wouldn't that be an even worse violation? Since those people were not directly involved in patient care? Thanks for your opinions...just wondering what people not involved think. Samarooni

what should i do
The assistant DON asked you to lie?!?! That's insane. I say go higher up for sure, don't risk your license for someone else's ridiculous request for you to lie. Not worth it at ALL. Good luck, be honest.

Insensitive Nurses
"When I was giving report at the end of my shift saying the patient failed another wean trial, the nurse interrupted me and pretended to wipe away fake tears and say boohoo while she was laughing with my preceptor!" That is INCREDIBLY unprofessional and mean-spirited. Time for that nurse to find a new career, that's terrible. You can't be a nurse without empathy, what a shame.

Night shift nurses
I go right back to a usual day schedule, I hate working nights but the money is good and the shift calmer...I know some people maintain that biorhythm but I just can't! Good luck..

Ribavirin and pregnancy
Well, ideally I wouldn't be on a heme-onc unit but I can't just change my job! I guess I will just have to tell but I just hate it and I know the whole damn unit will know my business. So part of the problem is I don't want to tell because it is private and the rest is because I know once all of the charge nurses know it'll travel like wildfire...some of them have the "gift of gab" a little too much. Ugh. Thanks..

What should I do?
Take the new job, no question!

Best lotion & hand soap?
L'occitane shea butter hand cream for sure!

Ribavirin and pregnancy
Hi all, I work on a heme-onc unit and we often give Ribavirin, which is class X as far as drugs go---guaranteed to cause birth defects in pregnant women, basically. So anyone within three months of trying to conceive, anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, is exempted from caring for pts getting it. My question is--isn't that some sort of weird legal/privacy thing? So if I try to have a baby I have to tell ALL of the charge nurses about it so I don't get assigned to this patient. Seems kind of like you're shooting yourself in the foot career wise- pretty much announcing you'll be gone probably on leave sometime pretty soon. And what if you are pregnant and then you miscarry or decide to abort? Then you have to tell them again that you no longer need this exemption. Does anyone else face this problem? I really hate to share my personal reproductive plans with our nursing supervisor, seems very private to me. Thoughts?

Salary in Seattle for RNs---low, or is it just me??
Not sure..I'm at Children's, where starting is 22.87 and call is required twice a month.
-
did you ever think it would be like this?
I never thought it would be this hard, no. I'm in an ARNP program right now and I can't wait to do that instead--I DO enjoy being an RN, but a lot of times I feel like a service worker that parents (I'm in peds) just boss around, like a maid...instead of a trained professional. Sometimes nursing just feels demeaning. So, while I'm glad I'm getting the experience, after a few years I'll be glad to move on to being an ARNP! And no, that profession isn't perfect but I think it is a better match for me.
