Cervical dilitation
hi, i just started orienting in L&D at the end of february. i was just wondering how long it took a lot of you to feel comfortable "checking" patients?? sometimes i think i might know what they are and then the other nurse checks behind me and im right and other times, im wrong. i know it just takes practice...

Any male nurses on your OB unit???
There has been a couple of occasions when we had a male nurse pulled to ob that i can remember. (once in nsy and once on ob hall). the one that came to ob hall just got vitals and ran errands, etc. i dont think they complained or anything. as a matter of fact, i think it was the same guy. not for certain, though.

Patients who refuse to cooperate with medical/nursing treatment....
I work on an O.B. floor and we often have pt' s who come in w/preterm labor supposed to be on BR who go downstairs to smoke, etc. and DM pt's who ask us for ice cream all night long!

anyone wear Danskos?
I bought a pr of danskos a couple wks ago and i told the ppl in the store i dont have an arch in my foot and they recommended the danskos. but by the time i wore them for an hour or two, i was ready to cut my feet off. they blistered my feet so bad! so they let me get a store credit and i am going to go back in a few mnths when the new store opens and see if they have a better selection. i may try the birkenstocks. someone recommended those to me. i dunno though, since idont have an arch. anyone have any suggestions?? thanks

new grads that don'y ask questions
hey.. just wanted to share an experience.... one day on my orientation on days (i now work nights..cant handle the hectic days..) i had a pt's colostomy bag 'go bad' and leaked everywhere. well, my preceptor took a while to get in the room and i felt so stupid and embarrased in front of the pt. well, while me and my preceptor were cleaning him up, the nurse manager came by the room and said for me to come to her office when we go to done. well, i went to her office and she was telling me i should have been able to fix that incident by myself and i should be able to do stuff on my own and only ask how to do it once. well, i just like to be sure i am not going to mess something up. (rather be safe than sorry.) she said that i was on my 6th week of orientation but clinically i was showing that i was about week 2. but anyways.. i went to nights and things got better and now i start O.B. wednesday, so i am glad to be off the medical floor!! thanks for listening...
